Yeah, it's about maintaining. If Dayton deserves a 5, but gets a 6, that would be wonderful. It's that 8-9 seed range we want to keep from sliding toward.

The Wake turnover with 22 seconds left that led straight to a 3 to make it 70-66 was the killer. If the guy just holds the ball, he gets fouled, goes to the line with a chance to make it an 8 or 9 point game with 20 seconds left.
Or if any of the Wake players make a foul shot, as they went 1-4 in the final 20 seconds.
That ending was nuts. N-V-T-S.

Georgetown over Creighton by 1. A perfect ending for the BE. Now they will tout both of those losers as power house teams when they actually suck. Sick.

Maybe he watched the end of EMU and Ball State over the weekend, where he saw it was possible for you to hold the ball, engage in a tug of war with the defender for it, have the ball ripped out of both hands by the defender, watch the officials miss a travel, and then the opponent hit a three to beat you.

Reminds me of a UD game a couple years ago when we had a 4 point lead and the ball with about 40 seconds left, we were in the two shot foul, and a defender was coming at our guy to foul him, but our guy tried to make a move with the ball and lost the ball. They scored, we turned it over again and ended up losing. Anybody remember that? The player will remain nameless. (It was a road game.)

That is amazing. My rule has always been, you need to be up by 12 with a minute left, or you can be beat. This puts in a new rule, be up by 9 with 30 seconds left, or maybe nothing is safe.

UVA hit four threes in the last minute IIRC, and obviously made 3 in the last 21 seconds.

Recall a game played at Pitt fieldhouse against the Dukes. Flyers down 7 with about 50 seconds to go( no 3 point plays back then), won in regulation.A group of us traveled to that game. Lots of angry fans as we left. Sure was fun

Yes, I see that the Dance Card has the AAC only getting one bid, the AAC automatic bid for Tulsa...Cincy and UConn are both on the wrong side of the bubble...the A10 got 4, Dayton, GW, St. Joe, and auto bid VCU, VCU is otherwise on the wrong side of the bubble.

GT beats NC St 91-83. NC St goes to 1-6 in the ACC. Gottfried may only be saved by his great recruiting class coming in next year. Second win in ACC for BG.
Marcus Georges-Hunt for GT and Cat Barber for NC ST are two stud players.

That moves GT up to #62 in the rpi, sos projection is 18, not sure about top 50/100, if GT finishes strong, they have a chance at a bid.

Oil prices have fallen sharply, T Boone Pickens doesn't have as much money to throw at the program???
Thursday 1/28:
#3 Iowa @ #8 Maryland
Cincy @ UConn (like yesterday, 2 AAC schools desperatly hoping more than 1 team from the AAC makes the dance this season, both are near the bubble line)
#25 Notre Dame @ Syracuse
Will & Mary @ Delaware
W Carolina @ Furman
#12 Mich St @ Northwestern
Richmond @ GW (ESPNU @ 9:00)
#23 Oregon @ #18 Arizona
So there's a chance 2 teams in the top 25, barely above UD (ND & Oregon) could drop a tough road game and leave some room for UD to claim a spot with a win on Saturday. Neither should get dinged for a loss on the road at either spot too bad, so its far from guaranteed that a loss by either would influence a voter to move UD up over them Monday morning. Obviously we want GW to win, stay in that top 50 and remain in the NCAA at large consideration, Richmond has fallen off the at large talk and short of a late season run of victories its going to take a title in Brooklyn for them to get there. They have the remaining schedule that sweeping out would likely get them an at large bid, but most of those wins would have to come on the road, so I doubt Spider fans are holding their breath.

I looked at rpiforecast last night, and I think finishing 7-4 gets them to rpi #48...6-5 would be about #60...they will have to finish pretty strongly, but there is at least a chance for them.

I would be extremely shocked if they go 7-4 down the stretch. In 13 years BG does not have a good track record of finishing well in the conference.

Richmond just absolutely blew it at GW. Up 3 with 12 seconds left they fouled GW. GW hits 2 FTs. Richmond then gets fouled and hits 2. They're up 3 with 7.6 seconds left and Mooney for some reason decides not to foul!!!!!!!!! GW banks in a 3 to send it to OT.
Why Mooney didn't stick to the fouling strategy is idiotic!!!!!!!!!

Bold indeed! A smart coach would have subbed for him when they decided to foul, but Mooney has proved many times over he is not that.

Syracuse defeated no. 25 ND, and no. 24 Duke lost earlier this week. Door is open. Need to take care of business Saturday.
GW and Richmond into double OT. Wild finish of regulation.

I don't like GW simulates getting fouled by jerking their heads back with any contact.
Richmond has played much better than GW, but GW has gotten every call. 27 fouls for Richmond versus 20 for GW and GW had to foul at the end of regulation so normalized like 27 fouls for Richmond versus like 14-15 for GW.
BTW, GW wins and more likely to be top 50 win so for UD, we are rooting for GW.
But I am finding it really hard to do so with the faking of getting fouled.

GW could be slipping off the bubble in the opinion of the eye test crowd. It just seems that if an A-10 team loses to a team they should have beaten the loss turns into three losses. The talking head pundits then will come up with excuses for 14 and 8 Syracuse to make the tournament because of Jim Boeheim's absence for 9 games. The dude was suspended ! Why should he get a free out of jail card ?

It is not the eye test that GW is failing. They are losing games to teams they need to beat. Last night at home to a >100 team ( Richmond). GW's RPI is now 49. Their win over Virginia will only carry them so far. They are not done yet with 2 games still against Davidson and VCU. They need to win at least 2, probably 3.
Speaking of Davidson, they are any RPI tiger. #40 but 0-4 against top 50. They have played the RPI game well. Lose to very good teams.

Agree, the door is wide open in the AP poll. Pittsburgh might drop out of the coaches poll too.
Since the last poll, the following teams have lost:
AP poll:
25. ND, lost at Syracuse
24. Duke, lost at Miami
Coaches poll:
23. Pittsburgh, lost at Clemson
20. Duke, lost at Miami

And UCLA right on target again at 12-9. Two more losses and they will be a lock.
They will get the silver spoon treatment at selection time. Three of their players have Affluenza.

If UD wins on Saturday, then we deserve to be ranked. It will be very upsetting if we are not ranked.

Clemson is an interesting one to look at.
13-7 overall with an RPI of 86; 2-2 against top 25; 6-3 against top 50
Losses to UMass (1-6 A10 ); Minn (0-9 Big10); Alabama (2-5 SEC); S. Carolina (5-2 SEC); Georgia (4-4 SEC); NC (5-3 ACC); Vir (5-3 ACC)
So other than S Carolina, they have lost to mid/bottom tier teams in "lower" conferences. They have no wins against the top 50 outside the ACC. They are 6-2 in ACC. Could it be maybe the ACC isn't really that good?

i don't care if we are ranked in next 10 days. Never seems to work for us.
however, beat St Joe's, GW and Bonnies, we'll be ranked between 15 and 22 going into VCU game ( and don't lose any **** poor games)

Ok. If you're not watching VCU @ Davidson on ESPN2, turn it on right now! I gave Davidson up for dead when they went down by 22. Wildcats have stormed back...now a 4-point game...under 7 mins

VCU won and put on a good show at the end. Frankly, except for the end, I was not overly impressed with either team. Davidson closed the gap but did not take advantage of opportunities and was turnover prone. That said, I do respect VCU and what they have done without Shaka.
It was interesting that two times (that I heard) ESPN built up the last regular season game -- VCU v. Dayton -- as the big A-10 matchup. They gave UD respect.

VCU
is a very good team especially on defense and rebounding. UD has found their new Xavier game for this year. Mo Allie-Cox vs. Big Steve will be worth the price of admission. Go Flyers!

We control our own destiny in getting the one seed in the A-10 tourney. We win out and beat VCU head to head, we get the one seed. Though we would not win the conference out right.

Is VCU the new Temple? Meaning play tough out of conference. Do respectable, but nothing great. Then come league play, blow the doors off the rest of the conference.
Shaping up to be a three team race - VCU StJoes and UD. Got to hope those teams separate from the rest. Maybe a fourth .. GW most likely? VCU already got StJoes at their place. Of the three, each only plays the others once. True round robin, with no pod influence. I don't know if VCU or StJoes loses to another A10 team (than the 3 leaders). So we are -1 in 3 team race.

VCU win puts their RPI at a solid 33. Knocks Davidson out of top 50 (52).
Big games today: Vandy at Texas. Vandy sitting at 57. A win should get them under 50.
Alabama at S Carolina. Bama at 54 and a win should get them under 50.

Watched the entire VCU game. They looked very fast and very good. Wade has them playing at the same high level of effort and speed, but they play less full court press and more tough half court defense. They were a bit more under control offensively than in previous years. As we found out last year, it is tough to beat Davidson on their floor, but VCU overwhelmed them and Gibbs in the first ten minutes. Gibbs had 4 turnovers and no points in the first ten, then the law of averages took over.
Allie-Cox is very quick, so I am not sure Steve will be able to stay with him. Our forwards are head and shoulders above theirs. Their guards are a handful on offense and defense. We must not turn the ball over and pound it inside. Allie-Cox loves to block shots, but gets lazy and/or confused on defense at times.

Alie-Cox similar to Pollard... A fouling machine if you go at him right. Plus, we get them at the Arena so I feel good about that one.

Oklahoma beats LSU by 2 at LSU, but how in the world does Ben Simmons not touch the ball in the last couple of minutes. Oh I know how, Johnny Jones is not good at coaching basketball.
Edit: But it gets better than I thought. Simmons took one shot in the last 10 minutes of the game. That is inexcusable by the LSU coaching staff

Simmons is a great talent, but his offensive intensity is lacking. He needs another year of college and some good coaching. What is with the dribbling the ball up the floor and then passing it immediately? Get your butt down the floor and get some picks and position. As C-time pointed out that is a badly coached team with very good talent.

GM plays at Richmond Wednesday night at 7pm, UD will be the less fatigued team come Saturday...don't overlook GM, they beat Mississippi and Oklahoma State on a neutral court earlier in the year...they had a suspension(s) or injury(ies) though I think early in the year...so maybe they were a stronger team earlier in the year.

If they would have made a fraction of the easy buckets they missed, they would have won easily. Don't overlook Mason . . . they have nothing to lose. Not that it will matter, but there should be a couple hundred Dayton fans at the Pat Center for the game.

#2 UNC @ #16 Louisville
Monmouth @ Siena (Battle for 1st place)
THE Citadel @ Chattanooga
Stetson @ North Florida
#13 SMU @ Houston (every SMU win is good for bubble teams, while a win for Houston would be huge for their at large chances)

Shaka is doing a good job at Texas.
They are quietly building a resume.
Baylor is a very good team, and beating them at home is quite the feat!

That 125 that Chattanooga dropped on the Citadel is impressive but it's not even the most they've given up this year. Butler almost beat the over by themselves with an insane 144!
That's right, the scoring juggernaut Butler Bulldogs.
Citadel is a balls out fun and gun team that presses 40 minutes regardless of score or situation. And the shoots practically as soon as they cross half court.

UNF losing at home to Stetson is a tough one for them. They were undefeated w/ a home victory over Jacksonville (6-2 in conference). May set up a showdown at the end of the season, at Jacksonville for the 1 seed in their conference tournament, not sure if they play at a neutral site, or at the home site of the 1 seed, or at the home site of the top rated team remaining. Since its the ASun, I'm going to guess that its one of the last 2 typical options, and getting that 1 seed would be huge for UNF's tournament hopes.
anyways, on to today Tuesday Feb, 2:
Happy Groundhog day!!!
LSU @ Auburn (A tournament w/o Simmons? Inconceivable.)
G'town @ Butler (Man how Butler has fallen, GTown hoping to get to the right side of the bubble, big game for both teams)
#25 South Carolina @ Georgia (still not sure if USC has beaten much of anybody)
Rhody @ UMass
#20 UK @ Tennessee
Miami @ E Michigan (like Phil Conners, I'm sure Miami will lose again)
Clemson @ Wake (road upset for a team on the fringes of the top 25?)
#22 Indiana @ Michigan (While IU may be 4th on one ballot, a lose in Ann Arbor may knock them out of the top 25 and propel Michigan into it)
Duke @ GTech (Somebody is missing a number next to their name, and I'm not talking about our former coach)
#11 Providence @ Depaul (just b/c they are ranked, I doubt DePaul stays w/n 15 of the Friars)
#14 WVU @ #13 Iowa St (This should be a fun, up and down game, will there be blizzard issues?)
Bama @ Miss St (every potential road win for Bama is huge to keeping them in the top 100)

Texas has the #2 SOS. They need to start consistently winning and they can be top 15.

Texas has a really good resume right now. 5-5 against top 50 with wins against NC, Iowa St and at WVU. 1 bad loss (at TCU #168) but hey, who doesn't. I would put them over the bottom 5 teams of the polls.

Both GW and Davidson are sitting right outside the top 50 and we own tiebreaker for both, but probably want to pull for GW to win as much as possible. They have a good shot at an at-large bid and a win over a tournament team in the top 50 does more for us.

No. 20 falls when Tennessee overcame its 21-point deficit and won 84-77 in an upset of Kentucky, which has lost two in a row. Almost turned the game off, but wanted to see if playing at home they could at least close the gap. Then, Tennessee's rally was rather incredible and I could not turn it off.

Rhody is sinking quick. Things change with injuries, etc. That is why I find it hard to rely on the prediction models like Sagarin.
How big of a deal do you think it means whether a win is 95 or 105? I understand the perceived difference between 45 or 55. I also would understand there would be a perceived difference between a 95 and a 105 loss.

Well hope nobody listened to me on that prediction that DePaul couldn't hang w/n 15 of the Friars, but the Miami advice was solid (if not entirely too easy to predict)
Wednesday 2/3:
St Johns @ #6 Xavier
VCU @ LaSalle
Mason @ Richmond
Bonnies @ St Joes (Juicy matchup)
Penn Station @ #5 Iowa
Arkansas @ Florida (not counting on an Arkansas upset, but sure would be nice)
Davidson @ GW (A10 Juicy Wednesday match up #2)
ND @ #17 Miami (who do we want to win, a chance to climb over Miami or keep ND well off the backside of the rankings? I guess Miami, who wants to ever root for ND?)
Creighton @ #3 Nova (a Creighton upset would propel them right into the middle of the bubble)
Marquette @ Seton Hall (Bubblelicious)
#23 Arizona @ Washington St (Which Miller brother will be ranked higher next week?)

Thursday 2/4:
Ohio State @ Wisconsin (Wisky is starting to perk on the bubble, tOSU would like to join them there)
Tulsa @ Temple (Both off the bubble, winner may get back on the back end of the bubble...for the time being)
#8 aTm @ Vandy (Vandy desperately needs to pile up wins, this would be huge)
bill & Mary @ Northeastern
Wofford @ Chattanooga
S Florida @ Cincy (should be an easy victory for bubbly UC)
Furman @ Samford
UConn @ Memphis (would be a big win for UConn, and the AAC's hope of getting more than 1 team into the dance, bubble teams everywhere pulling for Memphis)
St Mary's @ BYU (should be a great game, St Mary's getting votes)
UCLA @ USC (Why UCLA is considered bubbly is beyond me, battle for LA, Fight On!)

George Mason beats the Spiders on the road last night. They go home with confidence and wait for the Flyers Saturday. Pure definition of a trap game.

I'd say we have 3 trap games before the at Joes game.
1. As described above.
2. Duq at home. They are better than they were when we played them in Pittsburgh.
3. At URI next Friday night - Friday night, ESPN. UAC will tell you how things usually end up in Kingston.

Not exactly what I would call a trap game, because I don't think what the team your playing does the game before matters as much as what you do the game before (and against what quality of opponent), as well as what quality of opponent you have after that.
BUT
Seeing how we always seem to blow our Top 25 ranking, I think that's why I would call it a trap game.

Actually, while I agree with San Diego Flyer, even more than the trap game I am concerned with the target on our back as a result of being ranked -- because of our past performance when ranked.

When you are top dog, every game except those with you in the standings is a trap game. Every A10 will be gunning to beat UD to make / salvage their season. UD's record the last 3 years, shows this team is in the top 2-4 spots in the league now. UD will be picked to finish near the top again next preseason.
Goes with the territory. This program elevates when it can consistently overcomes the underdog teams that want to knock them off.

All I know is if I were a betting man, I'd take the points. And I don't even know how many we would be giving yet.
