Minnesota Thread
25-21 Gophers in the first set. We hit .077 and Kray and Z were both negative. Ouch.

You said 8 people in attendance. I really hate these Friday matches. If 2 ranked teams are playing, it's a shame that it is not at a time when people can watch it. I wish we could go back to more matches on Saturdays.

So far Alaina is having a nice match with six kills in 13 attempts. Isolde is now hitting over .000. We are being outhit .288 to .069 and have to be doing some other things well. The are outdigging us 26 to 18. Without watching it would seem that the match shouldn't be this close.
We have to get more out of Rachel, not being a criticism of her as I know she is playing hard. She has four kills, seven hitting errors in 26 attempts and is hitting -.114. I am sure that Minnesota considered slowing her down as a top priority
It will be tough to come back from this on the road. And I have an errand to run...

Ouch. Lose set 3 25-16.
Flyers are down 18-13, take a 3-0 run to make it 18-16. Minnesota calls timeout, and we lose 7 straight points, and the game. Ouch.

They shut down our two biggest weapons, megan and rachel. Neither of them hit above .000 The only positive is that they should have gas in the tank when they play tulsa

Someone may have already asked this question. Alaina was 7/13 with a sideout percentage of .538
Does this mean that she held her serve 7 attempts out of 13 serves? I'm guessing that is the case because people with less serves had a lower first number.
This Tulsa match is big in regards to keeping our ranking. We lost to the #10 team but will drop if we don't win the next two. And that won't be easy

I was out all day today so didn't get to follow the match, but MN has been a much more physical team the last couple years since we have been playing them. I was pleased we could play with them, scoring in the 20's the first two sets and it sounds like we were in the 3rd set until they pulled out a 7-0 run at the end. Hate to see that, but this match did not hurt our ranking -- and hopefully we learned more about what we have to work on.
UDBrian is correct, however. We have to put Tulsa away tonight. I think we will.

You are right. Sideout Percentage indicates the fraction of rallies where a server or team served and went on to win the point.

Right. She served 13 times, and we scored a point in 7 of them. I thought it was interesting just to see how we do when people are serving.
It's an underlying thing I was trying to look at. When Alaina is serving, she would be a back row kill, rather than a front row outside. When Rachel is serving, she is back row, and Isolde is probably in the front.
Today, I also looked at number of rotations, to an extent. You know that Rachel and Samantha are going to be in almost all rotations, so you can see how many times we rotated around by how many misses they had. More sets, or more back-and-forth sideouts, the more misses a player will have.

Sideout percentage...
It seems every team has serving rotations where they score more points in a particular rotation or rotations than in other rotations.
It may have something to do with the quality of serves from the server.
It may have something to do with the alignment of all of the players. For example the best hitters & blockers in the front. Or, the best back row hitter in the back or the best overall defense in the back row alignment. Or, maybe, the absolute best alignment of all players--hitting, blocking, setting and defending the perimeter.
Or, in a specific set/match, it may have something to do with the rotation of the opponent.
It is a very interesting descriptive statistic. But, sometimes it's difficult for me to discern exactly why. . .
Keep posting them Figgie123! I enjoy pondering the whys and wherefores.

I agree with everything you say.
Each set is different. How the rotations started, what players are substituted in, where the opponents better players are at, all come into play, so you can't truly get a good idea as to what's going on. I like to look at it all in a bit of an aggregate. How did players do each game. Better or worse than average.
Look at Rachel Krabacher. Her 1/8/.125 against Minnesota was the lowest of the year for her. Were our net hitters during her 8 serves not playing well? Did they not match up well against the opponent? Could we have tried a 2-substitution plan of taking her out of 1 spot, and putting her in 3 spots off to change that rotation layout? (Is that even possible?)
Our best point-by-server is Samantha Selsky. 53% (92/174) of the time she serves, we get a point. Her worst game were 2 40% games (4/10,6/15). She leads the team with 12 aces, while Rachel is second with 9.
As Becky says, Rachel is our go-to hitter. She's got 167 kills, with a .263 hitting percentage, which is the best in her career. Megan, Shayne and Isolde have a third of the attempts as Rachel does, but their hitting is higher by 60 percentage points. (Megan has another 40 percentage points on the other 2.) Though, that's probably because they aren't the go-to hitters.
But, it's interesting to look at it for each game.

Yes. But not since her sophomore year, and with 25% less attempts than the Minnesota game.
