Xavier (A10 Finals) Game Thread
So, here it goes. UD vs X for the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Dayton will get an at-large if they lose, X, not likely. Their 50 RPI will drop if they lose, and they will be on the extreme edge of the bubble.
UD hasn't lost to X since last season at Cintas Center. Can we make it 4 in a row?
Lets get the trophy, ladies!

Xavier goes up early, 10-4, and then UD calls a timeout. Then they blow by X with a 13-6 run to take a 17-16 lead!

The Flyers have set point at 24-23, and lose the first set 28-26. 5-2 finish for X.
X leads the Final 1 set to 0. Let's make some adjustments and get on them here in set 2.

2nd set has been back-and-forth so far, with an 11-10 UD lead at this time.

Wow do we look uninspired. Our passing and blocking is very poor.

XU makes a great run at the end, 8-2, to win the second set 25-19.
XU is up 2 sets to 0. Halftime.
Coach needs to tell the girls what we are doing wrong, we need to dominate and win these last 3 sets!

Xavier is totally dominating Dayton, almost a clinic. Dayton is out of sync and looks shocked if not scared. Dayton had a 5 point lead and let X take over and do what ever they wanted.
Don't know if Dayton can come back, X is so pumped that their adrenilin is carrying them. At least Dayton will still make the tourney but not the way you want to end the season. Perhaps a sweep by X would be what the doctor ordered to get the flyers ready for post season....or not.
Lets see how they respond, like champions or

Not sure if X is just so high or if they are throwing new wrinkles at Dayton. Well their back is up against the wall, lets see if they have what champions are made of.

Wow does the female color person have a crush on X or what. Even when X loses a point it all about how well they played.

And this is why Coach Sheffield was COY ... Xavier was up 3-2, and UD rips off 8 straight points, and XU has called 2 timeouts. UD 10-3 in the fifth set!

Gutty performance by the women. Sure looked bleak after two sets but after that it was lights out for the Flyers.

I had to pay $5.95 to see this match today. Going five sets, I guess I got my money's worth!

Wow! What a game to attend! Volleyball was played pretty well by both teams. Xavier's passing was really good. I can't speak for what was going wrong in the 1st 2 sets, but serves in the last 3 sets were kept away from Steph Vorherr if they could. Sarah Brown and Kelly Westerkamp had to receive and did not pass well enough to run the X offense.
Every player for UD came up huge. Congratulations to the Flyers for keeping the trophy away from Xavier and winning their 8th A-10 tourney.

So did I. I was at the bball game and really appeciate the ungoing text messages.
I'm sure Kelly told the team prior to the match not to serve to Xavier's libero. I would have liked to hear him reitterate that between sets 2 and 3!
It is really tough to watch the match from the side and see what happened. When you are watching from the back you can see everything, the block setting up, what the defensive players saw etc

I believe this is the first five set match all year that dayton has won. Being down two sets and winning is a nice confidence builder going into the tournament

I was thinking the same thing. I love a sweep, but this kind of match and the confidence could help us sooner rather than later.

Same thing happened a couple years ago when we were down 0-2 to SLU in the A10 championship match. I think that was the first match on TV for Dayton ever. And I can tell you the UD players on that team got a big kick out of watching and listening to the commentators talk about how great SLU was before the Flyers came roaring back to win in 5 sets. I'm sure this year's team will enjoy the same when they get a chance to watch a copy of the broadcast.

I watched the first four sets before the timer automatically stopped at the two hour mark. We gave xavier way too many easy points in the first two sets. There were husband and wife plays and too many weak passes. At times there seemed to be communication problems between Janna and the rest of the team. And give credit to Xavier for tough serving which was forcing fast decisions. They definitely served the short serves better than we did, especially early in the match. When you serve short you still want the ball to float and drop. Our short serves early in the match were ten feet over the net, you don't get any float on those balls. If you didn't see the match on cbs Kelly mentioned between sets 2 and 3 that UD's serving had been weak and on the other hand xavier had forced them into mistakes.
He said that it was nice to win in three sets but coming back from 0-2 was exciting.
It was amazing how quickly the tide changed. For the 1st two sets Xavier was laughing it up and having a great time. But, when UD cranked up their level of play in set 3 Xavier's tone changed a lot. By the middle of set 4 Xavier looked beaten even though there was still a fifth set to be played.
After set 2 Xavier did not get any really easy points. Our passing was more accurate and we had more options on the sets. On the other hand I thought that Xavier's passing level dropped some which gave them less chances with three option passes.
Kelly said that our blocking always improves as the match goes on against xavier because it takes a while to get used to their offensive speed. When our blocking started to improve the match was over and the xavier players knew it.

In the df.com recap, they have the post-game video, which includes the last point which was a great rally. Some of the receives that the Flyers did were amazing. There were a few Willy Mays fist bump returns that Kray and Krafka were having to perform. And they won the game on that rally. It was very impressive.

I've watched that video several times. Unbelievable! Those are some players that did not want to lose!
