Rhode Island 1 Thread

UD takes Set 1 easily -- but it's tight in the 2nd. UD up 19-18.

Rhode Island takes 2nd set 25-22. RI scored 7 of the last 8 points.

Flyers need to come out of intermission and take their game up a notch in set 3. Rhode Island probably made some adjustments in the 2nd set. Now UD has to counter those adjustments.

The flyers were up 13-7 and RI dominated after that. Agree that they need to pick it up a notch for the rest of this match.

UD was up 22-16 in the 3rd set. RI wins 27-25. An 11-3 run to end the set, and go up 2 sets to 1. Ugh.

RI takes set 3 27-25. Again the Flyers give up 7 of the last 8 points after leading by 5 late in the match.

Ladies need to re-group and finish strong. It's about focus and everyone stepping up. I would expect this team to come out on fire for the 4th set. They can't be happy about how the last 2 sets have gone.

We have 6 blocks so far. Certainly a nice performance, but we can do better -- need to get the timing and reading the setter down this set and get our block going.

Had 4 set points in set 3 and could not close it out. Ouch.

Tough way to lose a set. Before the final few minutes the flyers had limited to RI to consecutive points two times. And then RI gets two three point runs and a four point run to close the set. I definitely like the prestosports version of live stats, very obvious when you look at the point runs

5 big blocks in set 4 and UD buries RI 25-12. Just what the doctor ordered! Now jump on them in Set 5. Track meet to 15. First to 5. First to 10. First to 15. Go Flyers!

I would expect for seniors Megan and Shayne to be calling for the ball to close this out for the win.

down 12-9 and UD doesn't have consecutive points in this set at any time. That means they haven't won a single point on their serve

Tough loss. 19-17 in the 5th.

Plenty of lessons to be learned in this one. Gotta close out sets when we have the lead by 4-5 points late.

Team will be back in the gym working hard this week. Our goal of being the best team come tourney time has not changed.

I was watching this too. We did pick up 2 points twice at the end, but not enough to overcome we were playing behind in 2-3 points for most of Set 5.

UD vs RI

Kills 64-64
Hitting % .243-.196
Assts 62-59
Aces 8-3
Digs 71-73
Blocks 14.5-5

This is the 3rd - 4th match in a row we've been out-dug. I also think based on point runs that RI was doing a lot more with the first pass in serve receive. Probably going to be a big focus this week in practice. With the line up changes the last two weeks due to injuries, etc. I would guess a lot of practice time has been devoted to the hitters and position changes. Time to get back to focusing on defense, serve receive and passing.

This was a tough loss to take, but in the big picture scheme it really doesn't matter. What matters is what the team learns from it and getting after it again this week in practice to take another step forward. We get another shot at them in our gym next weekend and we need to put both Fordham and RI away with a dominate performance. I know this team will get after it.

Without being a vball expert, this suggests serve receive and passing issues again? When we go on defense first, we tend to win the points. When we go on offense first, we struggle.

IN this case (set 5) if you are only getting one point at a time it shows that the other team is getting a side out every time you serve it to them. It shows they were probably passing well and even our blocking wasn't bothering them. At the end of set 5 UD did put together two points at a time three times. And then RI had three in a row to win the match.

At the end of set 3 RI had two three point runs and a four point run. This would indicate that we were suddenly having trouble returning their serve and couldn't get a side out.

This had to be a great match to watch if you put aside our bias. The two teams had exactly the same number of kills. We had an advantage in hitting percentage because we outblocked them. On the final point they were out of system (setter didn't set the final point) and they still succeeded in getting the point. Three different hitters won the last three points.

I'm sure it was a rough trip home

Agree -- they weren't having a problem in serve receive and probably had every hitter option open on these sets and that's tough to get a block in place to stop them and it's tough to get that one-step ahead in the back row to dig the attack when you have to wait for the set because you don't know where it's going.

That's the trade off in serving. You either serve aggressive and risk a service error or you take some off the serve to get it in and the other team is in-system and you can't stop them. I know fans hate the service errors, but this is a perfect example of why coaches live with the errors. The "trick" is to find the right balance. We need to reduce the percentage of errors we are making at the service line, but it's a work in progress. We still have to serve tough enough to cause the other team problems with their first pass.

Like I said, if this match helps us LEARN some things like the right balance on our serving, etc, then it helps us in our ultimate goal which is to be the best team on the court come A-10 Tournament time. Tough loss, but learn from it and keep moving this train forward. Stay together as a team and keep buying into what the coaching staff is teaching. Keep improving and good thing will happen. I saw a lot of good things this weekend. I still like our chances and where this team is headed. It's certainly not the easy way, but that's ok. The destination is the goal, even if the journey is tough and has bumps along the way.

Keep working hard ladies!!!!

Sometimes the serving is a matter of confidence and confidence from your coach and teammates. I was playing in a tournament one night and in the first set I had three service errors. One guy on the team started complaining about getting serves in (meaning me because I was an aggressive server with a jump floater). I felt bad about letting the team down but my best friend on the team said "Brian your serve has been good for us all year let it rip".

And my serve was the difference in that match after receiving a vote of confidence. If you are worried about making a mistake you probably will.

From my experience bad serves happen mostly from a bad toss and from a coach asking you to serve a particular place on the court that you aren't comfortable with. Some players with a good hard low floater have a ton of trouble dumping those little serves close to the net.

While I am meandering about serving I'll mention a little bit about strategy. Sometimes you see a team hitting soft little serves which fall just a little bit over the net. You might ask why they would do this and they did it to becky novacek quite a bit. Becky didn't have a problem making that simple pass but what the opposing team was trying to do was to take her out of the offensive play because it was difficult for her to get back into position. Becky's best shot was the slide and the other team was trying to make it impossible for her to hit that shot.

You also might see the team serving to front row players on the right side of the court to make it harder for a team to set it to the left outside hitter.

If your back row players are struggling the other team will go after them but if they are passing nails you will see serves going other places.
