Ohio State Thread
Morning marquee match-up coming up between Dayton and Ohio State. Dayton looking for a second win against the Big Ten during another opportunity to gain national credibility.
Dayton is undefeated with a huge top ten ranking target on their back, while Dayton is taking aim at the target of the Big Ten's overall conference strength. Ohio State lost in 5 sets to Oregon and recently fought off Maryland in 5 sets. Dayton is in a weak A-10 this year and only has a few chances to impress and hopefully earn a tourney seed and home court advantage. I think the Flyers need this more than the Buckeyes.
Interesting fact, the Jill Loairs twitter states she was getting pumped and watching Mulan last night. Let's hope the Flyers come out as swift as a coursing river with all the force of a great typhoon.

Same here. Ohio State doesn't have any options listed on their website for audio, video or stats.

THE Ohio State site lists the starting time as 11:00 a.m. ET. Do you suppose that is the correct time?

Probably. The WKU site shows the following, "Fri Sep 7,2012 10:00 AM (CST)". So, it must be 11am instead. I thought 10am was weird.

OSU comes out of their timeout, scores 3 straight, and is now on a 9-3 run, taking an 11-10 lead and forcing a UD timeout.

OSU looks like they are defending Rachel and Megan well. Shayne has been very strong for us so far.

Dang! Ohio State is great coming out of timeouts. 3 straight after their first timeout, 4 straight after their second timeout. Ohio State winning 23-20 late in first set.

Ohio State has 5 (6? does a double substitution count as 1 or 2?) substitutions already used. With a limit of 15, I wonder if that will change things up later in the game for them. UD shows up with 5 substitutions too, so maybe we need to slow it down as well.

Set 1: OSU 16/7/43 = .209, UD 14/4/39 = .256
UD has no blocks, while OSU has 1.

I was going to post we need to step up the block -- but got sidetracked with reading the Krafta article. And Z puts up a block while I was doing that and then as I'm typing, we get another one. Good to see. Sometimes it does take a little into the match to read the other teams offensive timing -- and of course the audio guy just said that as I'm typing. LOL
I should just shut up.
My stats freeze up -- but I hit refresh and it comes right up with the current score, ect. And see now we get another block while I'm typing. Our third. Maybe I should keep typing??? LOL And there we go - -just got block #4.

5th UD block of the set, UD 4 point lead 12-8, OSU timeout. Let's prevent their out-of-timeout-runs that they did both times in the 1st set.

Nice bounce back in Set 2. Jump on them in Set 3 -- no locker room chat -- that probably favors the winner of Set 2. They will make adjustments, but we have the momentum. UD wins set 2 25-21.

This one is excruciatingly painful. Arrrgh. Really the team we need to beat to start winning the top in-state recruits. But, Im sure we had our chances. Still, losing in the same fashion twice in a row to these dorks -- gonna leave a little bit of a mark. Just gotta get better and go 2-1 this weekend. Most journeys are two steps forward one step back. Just part of the process. Onward.

Still having problems holding out leads. We've got the fight to come from behind but gotta learn to hold the leads.
Tough assignment with your first #10 rating. Tonight won't be any easier as the 5 set match will have taken its toll, not only in using energy but a let down. Now we find out what the team is made of. Go Flyers take no prisoners tonight.
Okay it wasn't a great train stop but now get back on that train it still has the same destination ahead. Make the most of the next two train stops. Victory is still in sight. tOSU just played their best game of this tourney.

We do compete with Ohio State for recruits but we have a much different experience to sell than Ohio State does. It is a tough loss but I think that this team will learn from this loss. Let's repay them in the ncaa playoffs.
This was an amazingly close match. 68 kills to 66, 64 diggs to 66. This is a tough match for the players because everyone on the team has a play to remember that might have turned the match around. Blocks were 1 to 1 which is a pretty amazing stat for a five set match.

A couple things stick out to me. 1. Another 5 set close match and we won the stat battle again - although close again. Last time we even scored 2 more points than they did and lost. It's just that close in these OSU matches.
2. They had better ball control and serve receive again in this match (per Sheff's comments, since most of us didn't see the match.) That's how they won the NCAA match 2 years ago.
3. We had 9 or 10 blocks after 3 sets. We ended with 11. It sounded like (from the audio guy) in the 4th set tOSU picked their offensive speed up a notch or two. We've had problems defending against fast offenses this year, but still won matches. An area I'm sure we continue to work on.
4. They won the serve-receive game, and at very high levels of play, (ie the Final Four) that always wins.
The team will learn a lot from this match and keep working towards getting better. 2-1 is the goal now for the weekend, and then break down the film of this one to get ready for an even tougher tournament next weekend. Like Chris said, it's all about keeping moving onward. We do that and this will be a hot, hot, hot team come December.

Definitely a tough loss because we had a Big Ten Team right where we wanted them, not in their building. The scheduling this year was good giving us chances to see 3 Big Ten teams all away from their fan bases.
I understand we probably don't recruit all the same players, but given the regional in state rivalry, I considered this UD's biggest match of the year, even if Illinois and Minnesota are more recognized in the volleyball world. It's still early and we still don't completely know how good Ohio State is, but they clearly feel like they should be ranked. Let's let the dust settle and see how Dayton and Ohio State do in the rest of the weekend matches. We will have more perspective on this loss the farther in the year we get.
Dayton still has wins against Illinois, Ohio, Pepperdine, and Missouri State. This team will be in the tournament. Maybe Ohio State pointing out some glaring weaknesses will be a good thing for this team.

I agree with this. Remember even just 3-4 years ago, UD never played this tough of a pre-conference schedule. And, come NCAA time, weaknesses got explosed -- with no season left to work them out. Not so anymore. Plenty of time to keep improving and more big-time matches left to both show our improvement and learn about other areas that need work.
It's very early and this is a very talented-loaded team that will only get better.
