Golden Capt. Obvious Award - GW

This may be a golden landslide, but I'll put it to a vote anyway.

Down 33-11, this game was FUGLY...then coaching took over. No panic, no pressure, just fundamentals. And My Flyers pulled out a must win at GW.

Who is the hero?? you know, the man with the golden you-know-whats!?!

Vote early and often...this Golden Flyer deserves his award...

King Rollo the Patient...OUT!

Anyone who votes for anyone but Jordan Davis was neither watching nor listening. Without him tonight, we lose by a dozen.

No doubt! I voted for Jordan Davis. Let this be a start to the promise he showed last season of being a consistent 3 point threat!

Nice that our coach made the list- though the day belongs to Jordan.

But I'm not hearing much criticism of our head coach from the 40% of you that were whining a year ago (no offense intended as were all Flyer fanatics). As we hoped his recruiting alone can elevate this program. But his in-game coaching seems improved, and he remains a gentleman and a hell of a role model to these kids.

I liked the way the coach calmed Landers after he got the technical. That was a window into how he coaches and how he is a father figure to these young men.

Grant held onto that leaky zone way too long, but he obviously lit a fire under these guys at halftime and, by switching to man, got us to play a little defense in the second half. That said, a vote for Jordan Davis is a no-brainer. Weird night when Dayton survives a 22-point deficit at GW and VCU comes back from 18 down to win at home against Lasalle. This league is ... unexplainable.

Great all around for Davis. Won us the game and took the monkey off the back. Honorable mention to Cohill. When nothing could go right in the first half he made some pure talent plays to spark the team into a comeback. Really impressed with play from the young bucs today. Game could have gotten way out of hand without their contribution.

Completely understand what you are saying, because this conference is crazy, but since when is it odd for the two best programs in a conference to make combacks on they way to victory? I find that a normal pattern to many conference games in every conference.

Comebacks, sure.

But 20 point comebacks to 2 of the worst teams in the league? Not bloody likely

It’s not odd that they won; it’s odd that the deficits were that large against clearly inferior opponents. Going down by 10 or 12 points to a horrible team is one thing and not all that unusual, but 22?!? Not really “normal” in my book.

Absolutely.

Not to be that guy, but he's due for a run of games where he shoots 50+% to get his season average back up to where it should be.

Can't find a reason not to congratulate and give Davis his well earned vote. Thank you Jordan for sticking with it and playing through some ups and downs.

But his contribution on the offensive end has to be much more consistent. The same goes for Mikesell. If Davis and Mikesell combine for 25 or 30 combined points, then UD is virtually un-guardable.

If there ever was a game that illustrated the value of a reliable shooter more than this one, please remind me. This one vividly illustrated our need for one or more reliable outside shooters. I hope the new faces next year will provide this. One golden half by Jordan is not enough to convince me our problem is solved.

Aside from this observation....this was one hellava comeback!!! Many more like this and I'm going to have to refill my nitro prescription.

I gotcha folks; but I still say 20 point comebacks would in fact typically come against the worst teams, who for obvious reasons shouldn't be able build 20 point leads. And that's just it, realistically they were much lesser included teams to Dayton and VCU, and therefore had little chance of holding onto those early positive margins. That's the reason the better team beat the tar out of theM in the second half.

Watching Jordan play last year he could shoot it. Not sure what's been going wrong for him but he's plenty capable of being a good shooter

I didn't get to watch the game. What did GW do to shut down our inside game and frustrate Cunningham and Toppin so much which forced us to shoot from the outside? Jordan Davis sure picked a good game to come out of his slump!

Other A-10 teams will see the tape of this game and try to shut down Josh and Obi as well so I hope AG and the staff will innovate and try to learn from this game film.

This game brought Jordan’s three-point efficiency up to 31 percent. Conversely, Jalen Crutcher has missed his last eight three-point attempts and has dipped below 40 percent — down to 39, to be exact. Would love to see both these guys above 40 for the season. That would open things up for Obi and Josh and win us a lot of games. Mikesell’s holding steady at 33 percent.

My biggest concern with this win is, the team (players, not coaches) may get the impression that no deficit is insurmountable, and as long as they turn up the intensity at some point in the game, they’ll win. That might work against this year’s versions of GW or LaSalle, but it’ll crash like a lead balloon against teams like VCU or SLU. They need to display intensity from the opening tip in every game, or they’ll be staring at the 6th place finish that some experts predicted they’d have.

For a similar case, I need to look back to the Cincinnati Reds of 2010-11. In 2010, they won the Central Division largely on the basis of comeback wins and hustle plays. In 2011, the recurring theme after early-season losses was “It’s OK. The season is still young. We’ll right the ship.” They never did, finishing 79-83, in 3rd place, and 17 games out of 1st. They got fat, dumb, and happy (as my old boss used to say). Last night, our guys started the game “fat, dumb, and happy” after the beat down of Richmond on Sunday. It took AG putting Dwayne & Frankie in fairly early in the 1st Half to provide the wake-up call. I hope that “fat, dumb, and happy” attitude stays on the shelf for the rest of the season.

We won a road game with 0 FGs by Cunningham and only 2 FGs by Toppin. On top of that, all 8 players scored at important times and we overcame a 22 pt deficit.

This isn't a good win...it's a great win.

Actually, a very simple win......This same GW team in their first game of the year started off with a 22-0 lead over Stoneybrook only to lose...I give more credit to GW coughing it up than UD winning.........LOL

Did not hear the the first part of the game. On recap from Larry, I THINK he said GW was in a zone. That coupled with no one's head in the game early on contributed to the situation.

That is what happened IIRC.

Honestly the offense struggled, but GW just hit every single prayer they threw up in the first 10 minutes. They realistically should have been down 8-10 points; GW just hit a crazy lucky streak.

This. Clearly Jordan Davis is the winner, but I just don't understand the gameplan with that zone and refusal to leave it faster. We clearly had the better athletes and that zone gave up a ton of wide open looks (it did against Richmond too - they are just a terrible team that couldn't hit the wide open looks).

Fun game to watch (second half anyway), love that I can get the Flyers on ESPN+. I knew that GW or any team for that fact can't continue to shoot 70 percent from the floor, nice road win.

Satisfying to come back and escape. But Hard to have a “great” win against an undersized 5-10 team, ranked ~250th, who has beaten no one of consequence. Underscores the work we have to do to compete in the conference. We can’t have our bigs shut down for an entire game, and rely on a once in a blue moon miracle.

Obviously then, I hope AG chews the whole team out pretty hard because your head not being in the game early on can make the difference between a sixth place finish or a first place finish in the A-10! Fortunately, it didn't cause a bad loss to GW thanks to Jordan being 7 for 11 from 3 point range and the hustle from the freshman Dwayne and Frankie!

I hope we play a tough man to man on Sunday afternoon against UMass and not a zone! If we start off in a zone Pipkens could light us up from three point range as we don't seem to have the ability to close out on three point shooters quick enough. Last season I believe he had a high 20's or low 30's point total against us!

We have a chance to start out 3-0 in the A-10 with the home court advantage and can't afford to squander the opportunity.

Last season in the 62-60 loss to UMass at home on Jan. 6th Pipkens had 25 points and then at UMass on Feb. 3rd he had 28 points as they defeated our Flyers 86-82.

Hopefully Jordan Davis can lock him up and we can get paybacks from those two losses a year ago! We can't lose track of Carl Pierre either because he also is a good three point shooter!

Did AG get lucky or did he pull the right strings?

Interesting that in a game that the Flyers are getting their doors blown off, AG inserts Policelli and Cohill. Policelli plays the most minutes he has played in a game - 8 and Cohill plays his most aggressive offense. What did he say to them? What did he say to the guys he pulled out? He played them just the right amount. I don't believe either Policelli or Cohill played in the second half.

Did AG get lucky or did he pull the right strings? I don't know but I liked the end result.

Seemed to me that Jordan slowed down his shooting motion some last night... and had more touch on his shot.

I think he just started off the season not shooting as well as he is accustomed to, lost some confidence, and started rushing his 3 pt attempts.

Here are the game highlights from a GW perspective:

https://gwsports.com/watch/?Archive=1103&type=Archive

Anyone knows why UD coudn't (or didn't) use game footage to create a UD highlight real of this game? It seems strange that the home team has highlights of the game and the away team doesn't.

Dwayne and Frankie sparked the comeback.
everyone was standing around against the GW zone. Those two brought energy.

Everything changed when the team started running.

That was interesting 2 minutes of all GW highlights. Then the handshake line and final score 72-66.

The first Golden Poll was posted in Jan. 2013...in the past 5 years, only 1 Flyer has earned more than 100 votes for their efforts and his name is Scoochie! With 109 votes (VCU 3/5/16) he is in 1st place. So JDavis - with 106 votes - is in Royal territory and just might take the lead in most Golden votes ever...stay tuned.

By the way, anyone who thinks McKinley Wright would have been a solution to our outside shooting problems, just glance at these stats. He shoots 25% from three this year, after 30% last year. Crutcher is at 39% and Davis at 31%. Nahziah Carter is at 31%.

A week ago, what were the odds that Jordan would even be in the conversation for POG? His confidence looked shot, his shot appeared rushed, he wasn't attacking the rim when given the opportunity; deferring to others. Hopefully this gives him the spark to get over the mental hurdle and he strings several solid games together.

I agree! I remember when Archie was recruiting Jordan Davis out of Irmo, SC I watched his highlight tapes over and over again on you tube and couldn't help but think what a great get he was going to be and he hasn't disappointed! He is definitely a stud and a baller and we should feel blessed to have him! I also think the GW game was the spark that will last for the remainder of the season and hopefully his next two seasons!

With 116 golden votes, JDavis is now the single game leader and reigning heavyweight champion of the world!
