New series, Part 1: Toumani Camara

I’m in serious UD basketball withdrawal — I’m analyzing rosters of non-conference opponents … going over past UD seasons at sports-reference.com … checking the @DaytonMBB Twitter page for any new information. So I decided I’m going to post a thread about each player on the UD roster — a new thread every few days. Just a little stats and analysis, plus a highlight link if I have it, especially for the seven newbies that we haven’t seen play in a Flyer uniform yet. Comments encouraged, disagreement expected, Flyer hoops debate dearly anticipated. Happy dog days of the offseason!

Toumani Camara ... 6-8, 220 pounds ... age 21.2 (DOB 5-8-00)
Hollywood, Fla. Chaminade-Madonna HS (originally from Belgium) ... #103 HS recruit (247 composite)
Wore #10 for Georgia in 20-21 ...... Entering third year of CBB / first at UD
28.4 min pg … 12.8 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.2 spg, 1.1 bpg, 2.4 TOpg
48.6% FG … 26.3% 3PT … 62.1% FT … 23.1% of FGA were 3s

He should be the best player on UD’s roster this year. If not, that’s great news, because it means Amzil or someone else is exceeding expectations. I don’t expect Camara to slump, because as a sophomore at Georgia, he was consistent overall (scored in double figures in 21 of his 25 games), and consistent against good competition (in 10 games against NCAA tourney teams, he posted 13.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 52.5% FG). His areas to work on are turnovers (several 3-4 turnover games), and foul trouble (fouled out 3 times, and had 8 other games with 4 fouls). He averaged 4.1 free-throw attempts per game, which is more than twice as many as any returning UD player. I’ll be interested to see how much they have him shoot the 3, in an effort to help him prepare for an NBA career. Lastly, was Ryan Perryman the last truly great rebounder UD had? Or maybe you think Waleskowski hit that level? (I think Josh Cunningham, Dyshawn Pierre, Chris Wright are a step lower). Camara could be the next one. He’s a year older and stronger after posting eight double-doubles last year, most of them against SEC athletes.

Interesting how much Camara, a lefty, dunks with his right hand, but his use of both hands close to the basket is a big plus. If he learns to shoot the three, lookout.

Good stuff CJ!

I agree he will be the best player on the team this year. A question: since you highlighted Camara first, is it your intention to go through the roster based on your ranking of first to worst or will it be more random?

While I want Camara to improve his 3 point shooting percentage, I hope he recognizes the importance of getting those shots in the flow of the game and based on score/time. I think he will but I’d hate to see the team to lose a game or two because he’s taking 3 point shots at inopportune times just to impress the NBA scouts.

While I see him helping on the offensive end, I believe his biggest impact will be on the defensive end. He (and Holmes) give us rebounding and a shot blocking presence that we were missing last year.

Thanks Springboro. No, the posts won't be in any ranked order, because honestly, after Camara and Amzil, I don't have any idea how I'd rank the next several players. I'm eager to see how offseason, preseason and early-season work shapes that rotation.

Thanks for starting this. I've been starving for news on how the current roster is looking since all have been back and working out. I know your post isn't this type of update, but it's of a lot more interest to me than 2022-23 recruiting, transfer portal undates (since we are full up), and even Obi news.

I have a friend that was able to attend a practice a couple weeks ago and felt like there was no one on the team that could keep up with Camara and that it isn't because we have a bunch of rumdums.

I would like to hear more about the "keep up" observation. Toumani appears to be very agile,
but not Obi agile. If the Flyers are going to run, Mali, Greer, Blakney, Weaver, better be faster than Toumani I would think. I could see him being marginally faster than the wings.

I realize contrarians will be swallowed up this pre-season with an avalanche of red and blue.
At least until we play the first couple games.

UD has had it’s share of Power 5 transfers in but I don’t recall one who had produced at Camara’s level.

While he didn’t come from a power 5 conference, the closest transfer that I can think of is Dave Colbert. Colbert came from Cleveland State where he averaged 15.6 ppg and 8.1 rpg as a sophomore. He ended up scoring over 1000 points in 2 seasons at UD. Yeah, I’d take that from Camara…

Thanks for the write up. His rebounds are what we need. I hope he can play D, because at times we were really bad on D last year. I think Amzil has the best shot of developing into a significant scorer, however, his D and the beginning of the year was not so hot, and improved as the year went on. This whole team will need to improve on D to make a move this year.

It isn't often that you get a transfer with those type of numbers. Our transfers in the past have been "projects" for lack of a better term. Languishing behind perceived superior talent on other rosters.

Rodney is an exception. Not known for his offense at UD, but he put up big numbers at Chattanooga.

It seems like it is very dependent on the school they come from. Certainly our "Power 5" Transfers have been underachievers stuck down the depth chart (Sibert, Ibi, Jordy). But the players transferring up have been pretty dominant at their levels (Rodney, Cooke, Cunningham).

Camara is certainly unique in that he is BOTH a Power 5 transfer and put up numbers at Georgia. Hopefully he is a sign of things to come and not the last one.

I do think there is a decent chance the changing nature of college basketball helps Dayton continue to recruit better HS and transfer players though. More and more top tier teams will look to fill up with elite transfers as those rules become more lax. That will in turn leave more elite HS talent on the outside looking in when it comes to those programs. Additionally the increasing frequency of transfers means that Dayton will have more opportunities to pull in top talent, especially if Grant and company can continue to deliver on the player development side of things.

I would add I think the opportunity for NIL $’s are greater at UD being a top 1-3 player than the 7-9th player on Alabama’s roster. That said, most of these kids think they will be stars and starting as Freshmen at Power 5 schools. (Why shouldn’t they…their AAU handlers have been telling them that since they were 13). I think UD will appeal to some future DaRon Holmes level kids coming out of HS but I think the real opportunity is getting kids to transfer in. Ibi and Jordan wanted to play more. Now you can offer both playing time and some extra cash they probably wouldn’t get being a part time player at UM or OSU.

Basketball schools like UK won’t be affected as much. A scrub on UK can go to Hazard and get a deal with a local car dealership; their fans are that fanatical. I don’t think the opportunities will be there as much for non starter basketball players at mostly football schools like GA, Bama, etc.

I hadn't noticed how two-handed he is around the rim. Good eye.

Also, these videos show Camara making a couple catches on the move in the lane that get me excited. Let me be clear that I love Jordy Tshimanga. The guy was a great teammate, good player and exactly the kind of graduate and person UD basketball should hope to produce. ........... But did I mention Camara made multiple tough catches on the move in the paint?

This whole team will need to improve on D to make a move this year.
I'm really interested in Camara's D too. He averaged over a block per game, which doesn't sound like a ton, until you check how many guys reach that level. A lot of his blocks (like most guys) seem to happen off-ball, when he reads the play, peels off of his man and gets a block in a help-D situation. I love that situational awareness. What concerns me is how often he fouled at Georgia. Obviously nobody makes highlight tapes showing all of your fouls, so I don't know if there's a trend for the type of fouls he committed (post defense, defending dribble-drives, rebounding fouls, etc).

It would definitely be notable if Camara made it to the NBA since DJ Mbenga is the only Belgian to have ever played in the NBA— officially that is. Unofficially, Tony Parker and Frank Ntilikina are also Belgian as they are Belgium-born French citizens. But since they both elected to represent the French national team, they are classified as French in terms of their basketball careers.

And while we are on the subject, I’ll mention that Finland -Amzil’s home country- has produced three NBA players, no matter how you slice it… officially or unofficially: Lauri Markkanen, Hanno Mottola and Erik Murphy.

Here’s hoping both Camara and Amzil both go on to become the 4th players (rounding up for Belgium) to represent their countries in the NBA— after exhausting all their UD eligibility that is!

Toumani's quote from yesterday's press interviews:

“It’s going to be a scary year,” Camara said. “Everybody’s getting better every day. Everybody’s trying to help each other out. There’s a positive vibe around here. It’s going to be a great year, for sure.”

“Scary in a good way?” Camara was asked.

“Yeah, for sure,” he said. “Scary in a good way.”
