Speedy Feet Lift UD Past Miami-OH 5-1 in Season Opener

Game Recap: http://udpride.com/forums/showthread...129#post591129

A number of positives. We have more offensive firepower this year. Its mostly freshmen, but they have given us a MAJOR dose of much-needed speed in the offense. Navarro-Leon in the middle will also help us immediately.

Defensively we're still shaky at times. The goal we gave up was pretty cheap. Overall though a solid performance and start to the year. Style points arent counted in the openers -- you just want to find a way to win. We did.

Certainly, a good start. Some observations:

Goins- 2 shots, both on frame, both in the net. Almost a third goal on the own goal. Excellent composure in front of the net. Only one player (Livingston) had more goals in the entire last season than Goins had in her first game as a Flyer.

Sheldon-good work down the left flank

Navarro Leon - like a breath of fresh air. Skill set in the middle we have been missing for the last couple of years. Took a couple of hard falls. Needs to stay healthy.

Huber- good crosses. Will likely see more PT.

Steiert-a frosh at left full. Will take some time to adjust to the bigger faster players she will face.

5 goals- we never got over 3 in a single game last year.

Defense- a bit wobbly at times.

Biggest disappointment last night - gave up late goal

Golz and Mags with smiles after the match. They now have some tools in the tool box.

Illinois on Sunday. Major step up in competition. They were picked 8th pre-season in the B1G.

I still cant believe how much more speed and quickness we added in the offseason. It's literally a night and day difference. You could make a case that four or five of the fastest players on the team are all frosh. Huber, Mertz, Goins, and Sheldon all demonstrated enough pace to outleg a defender and turn a corner. Thats something we have not had since the Kiehlster and even then it was basically just a one-woman show.

Throw in the Spaniard in the middle who is also very quick laterally and has some good vision and footskills and we are definitely a full step faster overall in terms of offensive pace to our game. The downside is so much of this is from first-year players so Golz and staff must learn to live with some mistakes along the way. Her teammates are going to love playing around her....she did a great job of finding them at their feet and seemed to blend in very well despite arriving late to camp.

Defensively we still need some work. Pauley is probably the most consistent back there, but there is not a Pestell or Beljan where you just presume they are going to eliminate their mark from the game and make the match 10 vs 10. At times last night we got a bit too "cute" with the ball in the defensive third and while trying to pass out of the back is great, sometimes you just need a big-booted clearance to take pressure away and give yourself 5-10 seconds to recover your shape. There were some instances when we were flirting with a turnover disaster in the making that could cost us a cheapie goal.

Becker stepped up when she needed to in goal, but not enough shots to really tells a lot yet.

Golz has an interesting dilemma on his hands. He played 22 players last night which is the most I can ever remember seeing the field in 20 years of coming to Baujan. He started 4-5 frosh and brought Huber and Sheldon off the bench -- those two could easily start as well. But they also sort of double-up on the same positions Goins, Mertz, MicLiv, and Mink play. Perhaps Golz could move a couple of those to the midfield to make room and put all eggs in the starting lineup, but I kind of like the idea of bringing fresh legs and speed and firepower off the bench and inundating teams with subs and fresh bodies.

I dont think this is the kind of team with a "best 11" thats going to match up favorable with the Saint Louis' and Illinois' anyway, so it may not be worth even bothering with. Instead, do what we did on Thursday and swarm teams with numbers and win with attrition.

I think we have an excellent chance to be far more dangerous on offense this year in spite of our youth, but will we be able to stop anyone? We may have to win some matches 2-1 or 3-2. But that was not a remote possibility last year with such anemic offensive output. With far more bodies and speed this year, we have more "hot hands" to roll with on a given night.

I dont think its out of the question that 3-5 players may battle for a spot on the A10 All Rookie Team. Frosh always hit the frosh wall. Lets see how they do in early October.

Pleased with MicLiv's performance. I called her out a bit in the preseason preview. As a senior and the leading returning scorer, she must play like an All Conference striker this year. She has it within herself to double her numbers from last season. I wouldnt say it if I didnt believe it.
