2018 Pre-Season Thread

The 17-18 school year is just about completed so what the heck...let’s look to this fall. Here’s a little info on returning players and some freshman for each team. Listed in order of 2017 conference finish starting from the bottom.

George Mason: Zero All-Conference players last year. 8 new players this fall. 7 Hitters and 1 Setter. 2 are transfers with 3 years left. One is from Italy transferring from GA Tech.

Davidson: 6 freshmen coming in - all hitters. They also return MB Crosley who was on last year’s Rookie Team. The bottom two teams are bringing in the largest classes and they are almost all hitters. As a conference member you have to appreciate these two programs are trying to improve. Better from top to bottom is good.

Fordham: This is the 2018 season sleeper. They will move up because their great OH Fairchild (2X all-conf) can carry a team. She was ROY in 16 and All-conference last year. They also had OH Lahr named to the all rookie team last year. They promoted an assistant coach to HC in Jan. He was an asst for one year at Fordham but has an interesting resume. Spent previous 2 years at San Jose St as an assistant. 3 of his 4 recruits this year are from CA. There are 7 total CA players on the roster this fall. He was an assistant at KS for one year before San Jose - his first year out of college. He graduated from TX were he was a student manager for the vball team. He’s been in the gym with great players and some really good coaches.

La Salle: has had some solid recruiting classes the last couple years. L Sharrits was on rookie team with UD Libero Wolf in 2015. Probably the only time 2 Libero made that team. Sharrits has been right there the last 3 years pushing Wolf. Both are very good and should receive post-season awards again in their senior year. In 2016, LaSalle had two more All-rookie members. S Wood and OH Corah, so they return 3 All-Conf players. 3 freshmen coming. One is presumed to be the Libero in waiting to replace Sharrits after she graduates. I would expect her to provide solid DS skills this year. Also bringing in an OH from Oregon. I haven’t seen too many players from OR in the A10. LaSalle has been moving up in the conference and I see that trend continuing.

George Washington: OH Clark made the rookie team in 15, but the senior hasn’t received All-Conf since. Zero All-Conf players the last two years. Bringing in 4 freshmen. It looks like GW will finish lower this year.

Rhode Island: Returns one All-Conf player from last year’s rookie team. OH Lunde Fossdal from Norway. Bringing in 3 freshman. They host the conference tourney this year but might not be in the field.

Duquesne: returns 2X All-Conf S Suiter. She will be a junior, so she’s been honored every year and would be a candidate for SOY. One thing I’ll learned the last 15 years of watching A10 volleyball is you have to have a good setter to compete for a championship. They also return 2017 All-Rookie Team OH Mosbacher and bring in 2 freshmen hitters. Plus they have new assistant Jill Loiars - worth at least two additional conference wins.

SLU- good to see them back in the a10 hunt last year. They return 3 All-Conf players lead by OH Gallop who was first team. They also had two all-rookie players last year including ROY OH Taylor and their freshman setter Cordia was on the all-rookie team. Coach Miller is bringing in another solid freshman class of 4. Two have played in USA High Performance program and one was first team all state out of PA in the largest class. SLU needs to stay healthy. That’s been a problem the last couple years.

UD: we have the most returning All-Conf players which seems so unlikely since it doesn’t include the POY and SOY who graduated. 3X All-Conf L Wolf and 2X MB Brown are joined by 1st team OH Bruns, Rookie team S Doherty and former Rookie Team OH Peterson. Freshman class of 6, which should receive national recognition. SLUs class is good, but ours is the best in the A10 and one of the best in the country. UDs 5 All-conf players have 8 all-conf recognitions - the most in the conference.

VCU: Returns the second most All-Conf players and awards. MB Baldwin andOH Giommarini are both 2X All-Conf. MB Sneed and OH Alder were All-Conf in 2016 but not last year. Their freshman class is a L and a 5’10” MB. It doesn’t look too strong right now, but VCU has brought in overseas players late the last couple summers, so there might be more coming.

UD once again on paper should win the conference. We were sitting here last year too. The team needs to take note and work harder than they ever have this summer. And if there are chemistry issues, summer is a perfect time to bury anything negative from top to bottom. from coaches to players so everyone comes into the fall on the same page. You will never get last year’s championship opportunity back. It’s gone. Do whatever it takes as an individual, a team and a program to not let the same thing happen in 2018. You can’t control injuries, but you control everything else on and off the court, so make sure you’re at your best in everything you control.

I forgot to mention Angel Agu has been an assistant at LaSalle for a couple years and thus supports UD alums are worth at least two more conference wins per year.

Also, TH has tweeted his rockstar post twice in the last week which means two new recruit have given verbals. With a freshman class of 6 and a total of 16 on the roster right now, these might not be for this fall???? However, it is the season to add any additional players for next year and Alyssa has been out on the recruiting trail attending a lot of club tournaments. We signed POY Amber Erahon during this time four years ago. Probably the best late signee ever at UD. So who knows?

Nothing out on Rich Kern yet, but I’m checking daily.

Great summary for the A-10 and the teams in general. I agree a lot with what you have to say. I'm am also afraid that despite hosting the conference tournament, Rhode Island may not make it. The bottom of the A-10 (GM-DAV-FOR-LAS-GW-RI) may be the most competitive yet. With teams like GW and RI graduating a lot, while the other teams gain experience and find players to fill some of their weak spots, those teams feel like they will all bunch up this year. SLU and DUQ may get stuck in that battle as well. Neither of them are clear favorites for the 3rd spot. The fight for spots 3,4,5, and 6 could be intense. At the top, Dayton and VCU will contend for the title. And this year, they play twice in the regular season.

I'll have to say more in the near future. Thanks for getting us started Becky!
