Thumbs up MacCormick's Dazzle Drops St. Bonnie 4-0

DAYTON (OH) -- The Dayton Flyers returned to winning ways with a shake n' bake performance from junior Lauren MacCormick and four goals from four different players to down St. Bonaventure 4-0 Friday evening at Baujan Field. A crowd of 734 fans withstood the first brisk evening of the home schedule to watch the Flyers improve to 10-4-1 (4-1-1), while the Bonnies fall to 8-7-0 (3-4-0).

Mike Tucker's squad started strong from the opening whistle and worked the ball between SBU defenders for open space both inside and outside. The Bonnies had some quality touches of their own however and demonstrated a much-improved skill set compared to prior years -- a reality not surprising given the excellent coaching acumen of former UD assistant and current SBU Head Coach Manoj Khettry. The Flyers remained a half-step quicker to the ball however and did a nice job of using their foot skills to separate from the first defender and open up the field of play.

It took a few scoring chances to get it right, but UD cashed in on a perfect cross from Mandi Back from 23yds out that found Amanda Gallow at the far post. Gallow won the high ball header over a challenge from SBU goalkeeper Nicole Markert to knock it in the net for the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

The Flyers remained well organized throughout the rest of the half and forced the Bonnies to do some chasing. Many players had a solid night with their first touch, but Lauren MacCormick took top honors in the last 30 minutes of the half with a career-best performance in a Flyer uniform. Shedding defenders like a cheap suit, MacCormick carved her way around the field and played the role of target forward to perfection when long balls were sent her way. She also found teammates all over the field with great one- and two-touch passes that launched Dayton into great attacking posture time and again.

The Bonnies remained determined to find an equalizer however. They never generated dangerous shots on goal, but worked the ball down the field with some nice speed on counter-attacks to win a few corner kicks. The Flyers cleaned up the free kicks from the corner flags however and showed some nice speed of their own to run down 50/50 balls deep in their defensive third.

Halftime stats showed the Flyers with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal while the Bonnies earned the edge in corner kicks 4-1.

The second half was all Dayton. On their way to a 17-2 shot advantage and 7-1 differential in corner kicks, UD received contributions from a number of players to put the match away for good.

Junior midfielder Colleen Gibson tallied her first goal of the season in the 47th minute with a cleanup in front of the box after the Bonnies mishandled a clear. Just 11 minutes later, MacCormick's stellar play paid off on the scoreboard with a blast from 25yds out that tucked just inside the upper 90 of the far post. On a night when MacCormick had a dump truck full of great touches, this was her best of the night. Like Gibson, it was also her first score of the season.

Down 3-0, the wind left the Bonnies' sails as UD continued to cut against the grain on their first touches to keep defenders off balance. Open space in the middle of the field allowed UD to push forward and keep SBU in a defensive posture for the remainder of the game. Mandi Back and Caitlin Proffitt each had one vs. one opportunities with the SBU goalkeeper and just missed out on goals of their own.

Defensively, frosh Kelsey Miller and Kathleen Beljan turned away the dangerous stuff with good speed and timely poke-aways to keep goalkeeper Deana Waintraub's night relatively quiet.

The Flyers tacked on one more goal in the 88th minute when freshman Kelsey Owen made a well-timed run and intercepted a Kelly Blumenschein cross from gimme distance to make the score 4-0.

Overall, UD outshot SBU 24-6 and out-cornered them 8-5. The Flyers never seemed to lack a dominating presence and different players stepped up whenever they were asked to make an assertive play. The Bonnies entered Friday's match on a three-game winning streak -- including a huge 2-1 overtime result against Richmond in their last match. They are a much-improved side but just didn't have the horses against a Flyer team that played inspired soccer for 90 minutes. They also had no answer for MacCormick's sheer dominance. If she can duplicate the effort a few more times over the rest of the season, Dayton has a chance to challenge for the top spot.

Dayton remains at home to host Duquesne in a Sunday afternoon match at Baujan Field.
