George Mason thread

Last home game of the year - boy it goes fast. My hope is Ohio St. gets a pod of four and Dayton can go there to play not to Eugene, Oregon or some other far away place. I understand why the tourney is set up where the top 16 seeds are at home for the first two rounds though it gives them a huge competitive advantage when the "beauty" of the tourney is the neutral site concept.

Probably not Barney. Night games during the week don't draw as many kids (and their parents), but Dad and Daughters night might help.

To get to Columbus, tosu would have to get to a 4 seed - Creme doesn't have them that high right now. Even if they would do so, we would need to be a 5 or 12 or 13 to get into that pod. As an 8-9 seed we could see Louisville or South Bend. Right now I see that as our options but a lot can still change.

NCAA released their (last) top 16 rankings and Ohio State is #13 so unlikely to move up to top 4

Big difference, parents don't bring their little ones to the men's games like they do for the women. Having said that those little ones will become parents and the future fans of our flyers.

NIce shooting to start the game. GMU center is huge, could be problematic.

Wow Cannatelli. When she has her stroke right, it is money. You can tell on the flight of her ball if she is on. When she line drives it, then it is a miss. When she arcs the ball, it is money.

Those two bigs are over the back on every rebound. Not going to get many calls, so we better block out a little better.

Dayton playing Butler very physically and it did bother her but she is still getting ALL of the 50/50 calls which is why our bigs are in foul trouble and she has ZERO fouls.

I think Geo Mason has subbed on EVERY dead ball...LAME!

We are in serious trouble when Ward and Phillips have to play in Jenna's place. They played 9 minutes combined and put up all zeroes and 0-3 shooting.

It is a problem when Lauren goes to point. Not because she can't play it, she does fine. The problem is it takes her out of the shooting role, and we end up with only Scaife and Layfield as offensive threats.

I think we scored 3 points after Jenna went out. One point in the last 6+ minutes. We made 2 of the last 15 field goals.

Of course, take Butler and Cardano-Hillary off the court and Geo Mason isn’t terribly good either....

Why is Jenna still sitting? With 3 fouls she should have been rested a couple of minutes, then back in.

Butler the real deal but Geo Mason will stink without her next year.

Cardano-Hillary Is good but Butler helps make her look better.

Nice little moment at half court with Harris kneeling on the Flying D and saying what appeared to be a prayer and perhaps reflecting on last game played at Arena.

What a butt ugly win that was. As good as the last game was, this one was just as bad for the Flyers. But a win is a win is a win. Save it for the NCAA. It will be hard to get up for a mediocre StL team on Sat.

92 rebounds between the two teams. We won the boards 48 to 44. Butler 24 and Layfield 18. We won't discuss the shooting... ouch

2099 attendance. Despite St. Louis losing to VCU going for 16-0 will be plenty of motivation.

Wow.

Some horrific shooting tonight, but pulled out the W. Really seemed to play down to Mason's level, & uncharacteristically poor decisions from pretty much everyone at some point. Way closer than it ought to have been.

At some point, thankfully, JaVonna decided they weren't going to lose this one. Nice job by all digging in at the end.

Huge congrats on the outright A-10 championship!

My Uncle was on his way to the game tonight. After getting off of 35 on Jefferson Street someone shot his back window out! He called the police and they came and took a statement. I guess someone had shot at a cruiser tonight also around the same area. When they ask him if he was heading home he said "nope have to go watch the ladies play" He is a die hard UD women's basketball fan!

Alex probably kissed the "D" (couldn't tell for sure and said a prayer). She is very grateful for her time at UD. And I remember at least one other player who knelt and kissed the D their last time on the court, Darnell Hoskins, also a transfer from Big 10 school.

I thought Wilmoth played well and was able to use her strength to make Butler work harder than she normally has to work. Butler got her points but was only 6-19 shooting and 3-6 FT.

4 games (men and women) and 4 wins in 5 days at the arena. That is a good week!

Did not bring our "A" game tonight but winning over a solid GMU team when not playing one's best is a good sign.

Cannatelli had a solid game. Unfortunately, as was pointed out above, when she has to play the point the offense struggles.

Burdette's second and third fouls were dumb fouls. She has to play smarter.

Harris came up big. Boards and some buckets and defense on GMU's Butler.

Layfield seemed to get the biggest boards and biggest buckets when we needed them the most.

Scaife hit some shots but also struggled a bit.

Free throw shooting was abysmal by nearly everyone. Nobody could hit a pair - we just kept hitting 1 of 2 every time.

Butler for GMU got her rebounds - 24 of them - but very few stick backs as she was 6-19 from the field.

Up to #29 in the RPI.

Now let's go to SLU on Saturday and finish this sucker off.

Absolutely. Jordan did a great job bodying up against Butler -- I thought she was more effective than Alex when matched up with her. Unfortunately, her shooting was off a bit, but defensively, I thought she did terrific.

When we execute, we're tough to slow down. When we dont execute, we can be had. Our margins are not huge and we succeed only when we stay in our lane.

Jenna had a couple fouls she didnt need to take - although one happened right after she was fouled on a trey with no call. Some other players took shots they really have no license to take. You have to earn the right to take certain shots at certain spots on the court at certain times of the game. We also didnt finish inside. We missed three straight layups from 6 inches away in one 90-second stretch. It took us 39 minutes for 37 seconds for a player to step up to the foul line and make two consecutive FTs.

We could have won this game by 15-18 by just cleaning up some simple miscues or lapses in concentration. Of our first 5 TOs in the game, 4 were unforced and Im being kind on the fifth one. Still, we gutted this one out after falling behind late.

What we saw tonight is our concern in the NCAA tournament. We're an execution team, not a "win with more talent" kind of team. Sum is greater than the parts -- very much like Archie's 2nd NCAA tourney team when we had no bench and everyone was 6-6 or under. It was a team where if everyone did their role, we had a chance. If we forgot ourselves or got sloppy, we were in trouble. And before you throw the bad fruit, Im not saying we dont have talent. Of course we do. But most NCAA teams we will face this year will have equal or better natural talent. But do they execute as well as we do? Thats our real strength.

Mason is a good team and a tough matchup. Butler may have gone 6-19 FG, but she gave them a lot of extra possessions too. The little frosh guard is the real deal. They could get hot in the A10 tourney and win the whole thing. They have a Rolls Royce player every other A10 opponent must account for like everybody had to do with Andrea Hoover.

Flyers are taking on personality of the coach though so I like that. No excuses. Find a way. When things arent going your way, make your own luck.

LC24 was cold-blooded early on. I sat next to the Mason bench. After her fourth trey, they were yelling "shooter shooter!!!!" every time she was taking a screen to get open. Her offense went south when she had to move to the PG when Jenna sat. We lost her off-the-ball talent. She's been on fire of late from behind the arc. Those threes are just coming in waves. I dont think Shauna even needs to tell her "if you're open and you dont shoot, Im taking you out of the game." She's gonna jack every time if its a good look and who in their right mind can blame her.

Fordham beats Duquesne tonight providing another example of just how amazing it is for Dayton to still be undefeated in conference play. I believe this gives Fordham the inside track on the #2 seed in conference tournament.

Last night just illustrated how vital Burdette is to the success of this team - my first team All A-10 is Burdette, Butler, Davis, Layfield and Cardano-Hillary. Left Kempf off. Shauna Coach of the Year. Agree?? Disagree?

Agree but Coach Green won't get COY. Seems lately it's been given as a participation trophy like last year. Funny how she got region COY last year, at least someone other than A10 recognized her success.

Think A10 treats Dayton like ugly step sister.

Kemp didn't have the supporting cast to help her this year.

The only other person who could get coach of the year is the George Mason Coach with their great improvement from last year and the additions of Cardano-Hillary and Butler. So many injuries to UD had to work with a short bench is a main reason Shauna gets COY plus heck they are 15-0 in league - what more can she do???

I believe Jenna deserves POY. Who do you think will get it? As far as first team, don't they like to spread it around? I would think Dayton and GM would not get two players each.

Considering the Flyers are 15-0 in the league getting two on the first team is not a radical choice - by reputation I think Kempf will get first team though she has struggled at times and was benched in the fourth quarter of the Duquesne game. POY frankly should be Butler considering she's the NATION'S top rebounder and is near the top in scoring - I wouldn't quibble with that choice.

Sorry I have to admit I don't feel she's a mortal lock for it though I'm rooting for her to get it. Watch for a Tom Archdeacon DDN feature on her on line later today and in the actual newspaper tomorrow.

Green may not get COY, but she's having a COY worthy season. We are 1 game away from running table in league with basically 7 available players most of season - 6 at one point. We lost Austria, SGA, Andi, Macioce last yr - that two all conference starters. We have one true PG and one true center. We cannot foul out or we are screwed.

Jenna is most important player. Layfield having best season, LC24 is most dangerous, Scaife is most overlooked/unaccounted for.

I'm pretty confident Jenna and Layfield make first team. Cannatelli or Scaife on second. If we run table and win league by 3 full games, league will recognize that domination. Kempf is good but SLU is .500 so little traction.

Give Butler the MVP. I want the tourney title.

I'll second that motion and I'm sure Jenna would rather win another A-10 Tournament title then have success in the NCAA Tournament.

I know it may not be the popular vote but Layfield is the POY on Dayton's team. She has learned to let the game come to her. She grabs all lose balls and rebounds. Her stats don't even tell the story about her worth to this team. 12 points, 13 rebounds per game, 47 steals, 22 blocks and heart!

Here is my two cents for whatever it is worth from last nights game. My 13 year-old daughter and I came from Columbus to watch the game. She is a huge Burdette fan and we wanted to see her last official home game in person. I am glad the Flyers played well enough to win as it made her both nervous and then gleefully happy at the end.

This was another physical game in which the officiating was inconsistent and while not as bad as Sunday, it was pretty crappy overall.

I think George Mason thought they could pound it inside and get physical with Dayton. It kind of worked for a couple of possessions early. However, Dayton is showing they are both mentally and physically tough. They will not be bullied and Fordham and now GM found out firsthand.

While Butler is big and has a soft touch on that turnaround jumper...she is slow, she can't jump and had quite a few of her rebounds over smaller players. I thought the freshman guard was their best overall player. She is gritty and makes pretty good decisions. That #44 is the one though with two big threes that kept them close.

The people who decide on the first team all conference have basically no choice IMHO, but to put Burdette and Layfield on the first team. When Burdette was out with fouls we let them climb back in. When she came back in our whole feeling and game action did a 180.

Layfield at times in the second half just with sheer energy and ability took rebounds away and scored the big time points we needed. She battled hard the entire game and she was at times the best player on the floor.

One other thing is when Scaife was really struggling in the second half and had just missed an easy bucket, but got fouled, Layfield walked over to her and hugged her tight and I know she was whispering to her she was saying something like, you got this girl. Now is where we need you. Stay strong and believe in yourself because I and your teammates do. Scaife made one of them, but she played a little better after that and that is just a small show of her leadership and ability to help her team in so many ways.

Harris praying and kneeling on the mid court after the game was a really cool thing. My daughter asked me what I thought she was doing. I said she is kissing the floor of the place where she loves to play basketball and is thanking God for this moment and all others before and after. My daughter just smiled a big grin. Last note on Harris...she blocked a couple shots on Butler with her physical toughness and jumping ability. She had a ton of rebounds too. I wish some of those shots for her would fall. I just love her heart and toughness.

Lastly, Coach Green. If the people who decide the COY, they need to look no further than last nights game. There was a scrum for the ball under the GM basket, bodies are flying and Harris has the ball on the floor looking for someone. Green in high heels no less almost sprints to the official at half court yelling timeout. She made a decision at one point to put both Harris and Wilmoth in the game. They were outrebounding us until that point and then things changed. Butler had no chance at that point, they both played great defense on her and that is why she ended up shooting rather poorly. Additionally, I thought her use of substituting each of them in and out was key to keeping Butler off mark. She had her points and her rebounds, but I thought those two in particular battled so hard it opened up things on the boards. Finally, her ability to make in game adjustments quickly is proof she knows the game, can get the best out of her players to be successful. If we finish 16-0 in conference play, shouldn't just be COY in the A-10, but coach of the year in Ohio and a national finalist.

Thanks for letting me rant on and being part of this great community of people who love Dayton basketball. I wish I lived closer, but I will always support the Flyers no matter where I live. I am so excited already about next year. We basically get a whole new team coming in. Gonna be fun, but first things first...let's knock off SLU!

Go Flyers

Next year?

We will lose the heart of the team to graduation. I do not follow recruiting nor do I know which transfers (if any) will be available next year.

I will appreciate some insight re what to expect next year. Thanks.

Transfers next year from SC and Syracuse - a talented freshman from Chillicothe - a guard named Skeens, Giacone is back, Parkinson is back - a deeper team it should be. This is off the top of my noggin so someone can fill in the rest of what I omitted.

Yes that was senior leadership when Layfield comforted Scaife who was missing layups and she definitely had her head down. Let's just say Burdette and LAyfield are co-team MVPs and leave it at that.

Let me amend this. If Jenna or JaVonna do not get POY, it is a huge joke.

And so it was pure poetry that the game actually didn’t end with Layfield’s final basket.

George Mason got two final shots before the buzzer. Both missed and on the last one Layfield snatched the ball from Butler for her 18th rebound.

“I wanted to leave everything I had out here on the floor one last time,” she said through the tears. “And tonight I think I did.”

There was a play last night where JaVonna drove the lane, dished to the perimeter, was knocked down and still on the floor when the shot went up, and she still got the offensive rebound. Pure hustle. I'm going to miss watching her.

My favorite from the article:

“This place has been wonderful for me. It’s my home. It’s where I’ve been built as both a player and a young woman.”

This should be why we have kids play. Championships and dances are nice, but giving a player an opportunity to work hard and develop as a person and a student and an athlete is really what it's all about.

JaVonna didn't see a ton of playing time early on, and sometimes it was pretty rough. Every time I saw her in a game, she played with heart and hustle and grit. She's obviously worked very hard to improve her game and contribute to the team. She has been a huge part of Flyer success the last two years and has really been a joy to watch.

Sometimes players improve like coaches hoped they would and sometimes they don't. Sometimes it just takes a little while. There are a few on this board (you know who you are) quick to call for a player's scholarship in the name of "not settling for mediocrity" if she doesn't turn out to be an instant star. Had coaches listened to some of the comments I remember from JaVonna's first two seasons, we'd never have seen her great play these last two years, and that would have been a real shame.

JaVonna has learned a valuable lesson in sticktuitiveness!! I remember when she was a walking foul. Hard work and focus has been something JaVonna has displayed makes players! Great ambassador, because she was not blessed with great shooting, passing skills or real size. It didn’t matter. She will do well in life. We will miss her!!

Just flagging this as a good post did not seem adequate. You nailed it perfectly. Where she is today - both as a player and a young lady - is light years ahead of where she was her first couple of years. Her four years here was a marriage that was good for both UD and for her.
