Duquesne
Only the men's Ivy League and women's MEAAC have two undefeated teams in conference other than the A-10 and we know that'll change Wednesday night. Big crowd please.

Your reference is to Libby Bazelak. The point guard battle will be interesting between Burdette and Omogrosso. Lass and Vojinovich will be a challenge to handle inside.

Fordham lost a 14 point halftime lead and the game at STL today in double overtime so that's loss #2 for the Rams.

Good sign when Harris makes her first layup and Lauren her first three. So far, so good.
Lauren with two bad threes. She has to be more selective.

Could not ask for a better quarter. We are ahead in every stat. They need to keep up this intensity.
Glad to see the refs overlooking some of the small fouls and letting them play. Only one foul called.

What's with Burdette. Big game and dribbles stops then starts dribbling again. She is not focused. Thank God Layfield came to play, not much out of our guards.
Big 2nd half for Lauren and Jenna.

Burdette is 2-8 with 3 turnovers. Good thing she and the others are playing with high intensity and energy. We are up in rebounds by 23-15 and 9-3 on the offensive boards.
Layfield with a double double at the half.

Painful to watch the Flyers fold under DU's pressure over the last minute or two.....11 point lead down to 5 due to TOs.

I was pretty surprised how early she came back in the game with 4 fouls. Refs really swallowed their whistles wrt her the last 7 minutes, so I guess the Duq coach's plan worked.

Thought Barney's post-game question about the Fordham/ Saint Louis game was on-point. Coach Green said she reminded her players that Fordham had a big lead over SLU at half-time too and challenged the team to finish strong and keep playing with intensity. I thought the Flyers responded pretty well -- they bent but didn't break. Glad we don't have to play the Dukes again in the regular season -- Fordham and Saint Louis will be hard enough!
Any way we could get the post-game interviews played over the Arena speakers real-time like at the men's games?

Nice the way the house lights can be darkened so that only the lower bowl is apparent....makes a crowd of 3000-4000 look like a full house...sort of....and not many women's teams play in an environment like that. Unfortunately the crowd is not usually 3000-4000.
Considering the run the Flyers are on I would think the crowd size is creeping up. Is it?
______
On another matter: Except for a very poor first Q by DU this game could easily have been lost. The Flyers were outscored from that point on. I suppose that's why coaches keep reminding players that it's a 40 minute game.

Eyeball test says home attendance is down slightly from past years but still the best in the A10. In fact, at the Chalk Talk before today's game Mike Kelly was singing the praises of the WBB attendance figures.
Here are this years attendance stats -- shows both home and away with no way to filter.
http://a10stats.com/sports/wbkb/2017...iew=attendance
Cumulative home attendance is 25783 with average attendance of 2578 -- both leading the A10.

Can nit-pick a few areas but certainly got the result we needed. This was an NCAA tournament play-in type game. Moves us up to 39 in the RPI from 51.
Burdette had 5 turnovers - a couple were just WTF! But she did go 10-10 from the line and nailed a bunch in crunch time. Overall 10 turnovers is pretty decent - especially for this team.
Layfield continues to put up first team A-10 numbers and maybe even A-10 POY numbers.
Got off to a great start tonight and never trailed.
Hedged on their 3 point shooters pretty well - especially in the second half.
Shut down Omogorosso completely.
Got the Dukes in foul trouble - a big plus for us.
We go 22-25 from the line. That is getting it done. Dukes had more buckets than we did. We won the battle on the boards.
We did not get a lot of good 3-point looks - credit that to Duquesne.
Dukes are a quality team - won 15 of last 16 until tonight. Only loss during that time was to UConn.
Duquesne coach never quit working the refs. Kind of surprised the refs let him get away with so much without as least giving him a warning. Another set of refs might not be so forgiving.
Wilted a bit in the 4th quarter when the Dukes turned up the full court pressure - a couple of ugly turnovers and quick shots. Plus gave up some offensive boards on the opposite end. Need to know when the clock is your friend.
End of quarter clock management was better - especially at the end of the third quarter when we ran a play for a bucket at the buzzer.
With the Fordham loss to SLU today, we essentially have a 2 game lead. However, we still must play both those squads.
That is 4 in a row for Shauna over Duquesne.
Good - no make that great win - let's enjoy it tonight and start getting ready for VCU tomorrow.

Not really . Flyers outscored Duq by 3 in Q2 & scored even in Q3. DU only outscored the Flyers in Q4 (by 5); they really cranked up the intensity and pressure. Flyers seemed a little befuddled at first, but got it under control and played them tough until the end.

We really needed this win after letting South Florid and Quinnipac slip through our fingers and the torching we took to Toledo. Other than Virginia we did not have any other wins that stood out. Not sure Fordham will ultimately count as one.
Thought LC24's defense was really good for most of the game. She fought hard over the top of screens and didnt go under them, forcing DUQ players to play off the bounce and not be shot-ready. The tall foreign girl and squiggy the guard got loose a couple times but hey they are good players and are on scholarship too. LC24 didnt shoot it well but it may have been her best defensive game of the season. Duquesne can and will TORCH opponents if they are left open for treys.
Jenna from Cooooolville had another tough night with ball security but went 10/10 at the line to seal the puppy late.
We jumped out early and never really let them back into it until the last 2 minutes. Dukes scored much better in second half but we got some O-boards to help ourselves out and made a couple timely baskets or FTs to just keep enough separation to stay in the driver's seat throughout.
Lets not count chickens though. We're capable of winning -- or losing -- just about any game left on the schedule. Plenty of landmines left. Shauna knows this. Tonight's win doesn't mean squat if we come out in the next match and cook an omelet.

[QUOTE=ud69;533770Duquesne coach never quit working the refs. Kind of surprised the refs let him get away with so much without as least giving him a warning. Another set of refs might not be so forgiving.[/QUOTE]
He was non-stop on the refs from the opening tip...in fact, his assistants did most of the in-game coaching. There were times his girls were looking to him for instruction/plays to run and he was constantly running his lip at an official. On the flip side, Shauna, when arguing a call, makes her point and moves on.

I believe that was Layfield's eight straight double double. That lady is some kind of player. She is the quickest lady to a loose basketball I have ever seen. If she does not have position on a rebound, she still feels the ball is hers, and is on it every time. Her intensity is amazing and rubs off on her teammates. Layfield played every minute yesterday, and there was no let up in her hustle. We are seeing a Flyer legend. Remember a couple of years ago when her shooting was suspect. Yesterday, she was 7-11, 2-2 on threes and 2-2 from the line.
I love Green and her staff. So many less turnovers, and better defense than with the previous coaching staff. They run tireless offensive sets and picks, and with only occasional letups on defense, despite her players having to play so many minutes.
Green and staff have not only developed Layfield, but Cannatelli is starting to play decent defense, as well as Scaife.
The hidden hero yesterday was Harris. For her to make 4-5 shots and 5-7 free throws was huge.
Some want to blame the coach, so let us blame Coach Green for turning this team and season around. She could have thrown in the towel after a weak start and all the injuries, but her toughness and structure rubs off on the players. She deserves national coach of the year consideration.

Yet I'm sure she won't even come close to getting A10 POW.

Some of that is by design:

Among the wrinkles Burt instilled in the program: naming assistant coaches "coordinators," with one handling offense, one overseeing defense and one in charge of transition and rebounding. Burt calls himself a "macro-manager" who delegates lots of authority to his assistant coaches.

Jack mentioned Alex's contributions above. I will mention that someone who knows her said she is battling through some physical difficulty (knee, I think) I watched her last night and she generally went to the bike when she came out of the game.

As I suspected, nary a mention, although Burdette is.
I guess Layfield's problem is that this is now her "normal" production.

Duquesne gets drilled at home by Saint Joseph's 69-50 this afternoon and it wasn't even that close (Hawks only scored 8 in final quarter). Dukes fall into a tie for second place with Fordham (who won today) at 10-2.

wow how embarrassing for Duguesne losing a double header on their home court.
Men lost by 23 points and the women by 19 points.
Men are spiraling downward and the women just about guaranteed they will not be in the NCAA unless they win the A-10 tournament.
Gotta protect your home court.

Two more home games for UD. They need our support to help with that home court advantage.
