Figgie's DI Volleyball RPI
Special thanks to Figgie for working his butt off to bring you a volleyball RPI this year! His handiwork is subject to his own time and effort constraints. Enjoy!

Thanks everyone. It was something that seemed like a void, so I decided to fill it. Realize that the RPI that I create will not be 100% accurate to what the NCAA puts together. They add bonus and penalty points into their RPI which is confidential. But, it's close enough for me.

Just a quick FYI. I have made this completely automated. The RPI should run every morning at 630am. On Fridays, additionally at 8pm and midnight. On Saturday and Sunday, additionally at noon, 4pm, 8pm and midnight. The Friday/Saturday/Sunday updates will only be for the last 2 days of games. The 630am will update all the years games.

Just a note to mention that the Figgie Volleyball RPI is back and up going. I was originally going to wait until Monday for most of the games to be entered into NCAA.org, but I have already gotten a few people looking for it.
With that said, 55% of Friday's games and 37% of Saturday's games are entered, and Dayton is #1 in the RPI! Can we end the season now?

ok -- I always thought you had to play top opponents to impact your RPI - even if you lost most of those matches.
Well look at Colorado State. They played no one in the Top 25 and went 1-1 against the Top 50 and have a 20 RPI.
And add to that they aren't in that great of a conference --- I haven't looked at it compared to the A-10, so it might be a little better... but it can't be by much.

Your RPI is affected by your win-loss record, your opponent's win-loss record, and your opponent's opponent's win-loss record. It has nothing to do with the quality of the team, or the league they play in.
You could play the top teams in the 10 worst RPI leagues, and if you were to win all those games, you would have a remarkable RPI. That's because the top teams in those leagues will have most-likely a .600 or better win-percentage, and if you win most of those games, you can probably have a .600 or better, and that is 3/4 of your score.
RPI is calculated as follows: - 25% - your winning percentage
- 50% - average of your opponent's winning percentages
- 25% - average of your opponent's opponent's winning percentages
It's completely based on win-loss record for the entire Division I NCAA. (Division 2 games, and transitional teams (usually (Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word are not allowed yet, but UMass Lowell is)) are not counted towards win-loss records.)
The NCAA doesn't have schedules up yet, so I have a week to get things going and hope that the schedule pages are working by next Friday when things open up.

VBall RPI does not have a home/neutral/away multiplier like hoops, correct?

Correct. I produce a H/N/A version for reference (because Hawaii doesn't seem to ever play non-conference games off the islands), but the selection committee doesn't use one. VBall does have bonus and penalty points based on beating teams in the top part of the RPI and losing to bottom parts of the RPI.

First time I'd heard of the bonus & penalty points. Thanks! I knew about your opponents and you opponents opponents, but didn't know the percentages.

We lost last night so I expected a big drop and there we sit at #22. I'm sure the polls will reflect the loss much more than the rpi. Of course we lost to a team with a good record and they should continue to win a lot of matches this year

We did drop to 25 when I looked twice late last night but other matches/opponents winning must have bumped us back up.
I felt if we dropped either LMM or So ILL we would be okay coming out of the weekend because for the two UD hosted tournaments on the schedule we did an honorable scheduling these teams. And I thought the WSU tournament was ok for first weekend out with a young team.
It' was the 3rd tournament and the mid-week matches on the schedule This year I was disappointed in when it came out. To add to the issue, SLU and normally solid Ohio are both struggling.
And every team in this tournament will benefit from UDs 20-something rpi and our win-loss percentage. LMM jumped from 107 to 65 after this win. That's a huge jump.
We have take care of business today. We don't want to come out with 2 losses at this point. And that has more to do with the surprise struggles of our opponents and their opponents than anything. We don't have enough teams on the schedule that will off-set the traditional solid teams that are underperforming.
