BEVERLY HILLS (MI) – Let’s hit the links:

-- I’m not and never have been a UD season ticket holder, so the relative strength or weakness of the recently released Flyers’ home schedule doesn’t impact me one way or the other:

http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/...kbl-sched.html

Personally, I was less than enthused to see that the Duquesne game is on a Saturday, meaning I can’t time a business trip to the ‘Burgh to coincide with it. Not too crazy about both X games being in the middle of the week, either. I will, however, drive an hour for the road game at Toledo, for sure.

-- Nice piece by TSN’s Mike DeCourcy on the hoops tour that BG and 5 other current D-1 head coaches participated in over in Iraq:

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=447871

-- Steve Bell of MLive.com reports that former BG recruiting target Chase Simon of Detroit lasted only a year at Central Michigan. He’s transferring to UD-Mercy to play for Ray McCallum. UD-M is suddenly becoming a recruiting force here in Michigan under former IU assistant McCallum.

-- Speaking of CMU, Bell also notes that current BG target Anthony Fields of Detroit Southeastern was in attendance (along with 10 other class of 2010 Detroit-area players) at the Chippewa’s home football opener vs. Eastern Illinois on Thursday night. Here’s a link to his blog, which is updated frequently:

-- Less than stellar assessment of Fields’ talent from someone who goes by the handle “Getting Buckets” on the BankHoops.com MB:

“Anthony Fields is getting invited for an unofficial visit to CMU? The same kid that played the previous two years at Lake Orion. I have seen the kid play a few times, I thought he was a good high school player and thought he would be a d-3 or a WHAC player. I never thought the kid would get any attention from any D-1 programs. I saw the kid get outplayed both times I saw him play last year, once by Julius Porter from Clarkston who is going to be playing at Alma and then he got out played in districts by Waterford Mott's point guard John Schaeffer. Fields is a solid high school player and I thought he was made better because he played off of Drew Maynard as he received double and triple teams which freed Fields up more and there was not much pressure on him. I am very surprised they invited him to come visit even if it is unofficial.”

It sounds like whoever wrote this has a Paul Bunyan-sized axe to grind with young Mr. Fields, but maybe that’s just me.

-- If you’re willing to pay “only 34 cents a day” you too can see BRob’s full profile on the Eurobasket website:

http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp...PlayerID=36162

I’m not…that translates to $124 a year, man.

-- Elena Delle Donne, the 1st Team HS All-American from Delaware that I had the pleasure to play pick up hoops with/against for a week in Stone Harbor, NJ a few summers ago has left UConn after only a few days and enrolled at Delaware to play volleyball:

http://rethinkbball.blogspot.com/200...s-us-that.html

I’m glad she found something that makes her happy because clearly, for whatever reason, Elena no longer “had the love” for hoops, as they used to say in the old Nike TV commercials.

-- 5’7” Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox not only batted clean up for the Sox over the weekend, but was intentionally walked by Pale Hose gas bag of a manager Ozzie Guillen, who said “I never thought I would walk a jockey.” This, after the “jockey” in question went 4-for-4 in two consecutive games vs. The Oz Man’s Southsiders.

-- I’m a big fan of “FAIL” images. Here’s a link to the recent epic FAIL thread on Fark.com that contains just about every winning FAIL picture in it:

http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comm...IDLink=3813171

-- I’ve always loved Miami of Ohio’s coach Charlie Coles, as he seems like he’d be a really cool guy to play for or even against. He’s had a busy summer, signing 3 prospects for the Redhawks in PF Drew Kelly of TN and Cincy guards Allen Roberts and Orlando Williams.

-- Good profile in the Boston Globe of Dayton native Dave Mellor, now the Head Groundskeeper at Fenway Park:

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/b...sox&position=2

-- Best compliment I’ve been paid on a basketball court in a while, while playing pick-up hoops on Sunday: “There’s really a 22 year old hiding under this old guy disguise, right?”

-- Gary Parrish of CBS Sportsline has a brutal assessment of Louisville’s Derrick Caracter, who is now headed to the college basketball version of Siberia, the NAIA;

http://www.sportsline.com/collegebas...story/10946646

-- I‘ve never run into an instance where a “From the Swamp” column of mine was linked-to from another website…until now:

http://mychicago.ws/2008/07/30/uncle...tour-volume-2/

-- Nice piece on ESPN.com by former WSU coach Paul Biancardi and former Flyer assistant Reggie Rankin about OSU recruit Jared Sullinger, in which they also give primo BG target Adreian Payne a great big shout out:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recru...ory?id=3557677

I’m not the first to bring this up, but has there ever been a better AAU squad than the All-Ohio Red 16 and under team that featured Sullinger, Payne, UD commit Juwan Staten, UD target Aaron Craft, Rivals 5 star recruit Jordan Sibert and J. D. Witherspoon?

-- Finally, welcome to new UD Pride reader udrocks 98. He/she posted a reply on the MB to my recent FTS article about “Life on the Road” and asked what the heck it was doing on a UD hoops/sports site. Legitimate question. I explained that I write about lots of stuff, not all of it basketball related.

One of the cool features on UD Pride is the archives, where you can go back and read old articles and columns. Simply click on “Find Article” on the home page, scroll down to the bottom where it says “Display Options” and choose “From the Beginning” and you’ll have a listing of everything Chris, Mad Dog, me or anyone else has written since the big server meltdown a few years back. Or, if you’re really freakin’ lazy, just click here:

That’s it “From the Swamp.”

Fields Video

This edition of FTS includes a highly critical MB post on BG target Anthony Fields of MI. In the interest of fair play, here is a rebuttal--a highlight video of Fields from YouTube:

My thanks to Jamal Richards of We Fly High Ballers:
