2016 Championship Game Thread - UD vs SJU
Don't forget to set DVRs for 12:00 on WKEF-2! I live in Philly area. The Hawks are super ****ed off and have every right to be, for getting preempted despite the fact that Drexel WSOC in the CAA final will be shown there on Comcast (allegedly).
Tidbit to note, in case we see it happen again: 2008 was the last time a team went unscored upon in the A10 tournament weekend. 2011, Dayton came close to being the only team to achieve this since the format change to no byes. However, UMass scored a lone goal to interrupt what could have been the third shutout in the weekend.
I think it's fantastic the way Kiehl's been striking the ball lately. What a force to be reckoned with. And Coach Tucker, he must be so proud of the way the defense has come together and what better time to start pitching shutouts? His great Dayton teams gone by just didn't commit many errors, and error free soccer is an intimidating force for opponents. There is the feeling out there sometimes that Dayton just will not and cannot be scored upon. That feeling was gone for a little while. But it could be back just in time!
As for the PK scenario, yes I believe Tucker went 1-4 in PK situations, or something like that. I was at several of the blowouts, and what made them particularly tough is the years we went 0-3 or 1-4. The La Salle game was at least close enough to come down to the last shot! But we always joke about them practicing PK's enough. I would think they do. I agree the idea has to be to not let the SJU goalie be a hero. I hate PK's, winning always feels like a tie because it is a tie except in college cup final. And losing is still a loss no matter what the selection committee wants to call it.
I am proud of the 1 loss season of the Hawks which was pretty great for the A10 and largely unexpected. 11-0-1 in conference record puts them among the Elite A10 squads of all time. But it's time to end that right there.

An amazing performance by the ladies. Wow. I turned the game on a minute or two before the first goal, and was amazed at how they played the rest of the way. That sixth goal from 35 yards out, or so, was just awesome and probably just the way the game was overall. Nice crossing passes for goals, a header, a 35 yarder, just great playing.
I only went to 2 or 3 home games, but they never seemed to find the holes in the defense much, but today, they were able to pass it back and forth and get to the open spot for the pass.
Congratulations ladies! A10 Champions!

Libby Leedom, with a hat trick today, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship.

Great game! Constantly on the attack. Hawks hardly sniffed the other side of the field. Limited to what -- one, maybe two shots? Dominant performance. And what a send off for Coach Tucker.

The game is archived on the A 10 site.

I will be watching the second half because I left home at the half to go to WBB, felt good to have a 2-0 lead. Final score was announced at the game, but I have to see it!!
Extremely happy for Coach Tucker.
Go Flyers!

Can someone explain to me how a team that is 18-1-2 and playing for a conference championship can lose by 7 goals to a team that at the time was under .500? This could not have been a more amazing finish to Tucker's career. I know there is at least one more game to play, but this is one for the ages. Congratulations on an amazing performance.

Actually 5 games ago Tucker changed his lineup and asked Libby Leedom if she would mind playing up front. this opened the door for Livingston and a few others to step up and play dayton womens soccer. The rest is as they say....history.
None of the A10 teams had seen this lineup and were totally taken by the new Dayton Flyers. Three shutouts in a row and setting tournament records along the way.
No question this group of players know how to play together. Congrats ladies and coach Tucker.

There were a couple of tweaks to the lineup. That helped a bit. However, IMHOP the ladies finally decided to compete. Up until recently, other than Kiehl, and to a large degree Byrne and Pestell, the effort was suspect. Can't tell if it had anything to do with Tucker's retirement, or perhaps facing the prospect of being one of the worst teams (record wise) in Tucker's coaching career - or maybe a bit of both. You would hope at some point pride kicks in and you want to represent yourself and your university with distinction.
Entering the tournament we were 6-9-3. Even now, our RPI is somewhere around 200. Today, it looked like we had 13 players on the field. We were winning every 50-50 ball. We were competing as a team - all eleven.
First round NCAA games are played at the site of the higher seed - all 32 games. Possibles are tosu, Notre Dame, WVU. If I had my choice - WVU. They are #1 in the country. I would want to test myself against the best.

I used to complain, sorta, that the A10 finals was too often following chalk, meaning the winners were either #1 or #2 seed almost every year. It is great that the seven seed won in both 2015 ( Duquesne) and 2016 (Dayton!).
