Quinnipiac
I'll be putting on my Dayton sweatshirt and driving down to Hamden CT tomorrow to watch the Flyers take on Quinnipiac. Winning on the road is always tough....I'm hoping the Flyers can pull it off.
A word re Quinnipiac: QU is an "up-and-coming" private school with great ambitions, academically and athletically. Recently QU took a very big step for a school slightly smaller than UD when it opened a medical school. That involves really big bucks.
Athletically I think QU has it's eye on the A10 as its programs become more consistently successful.
Go Flyers!

Flyers will have to show themselves much better than their last road trip (Toledo). Namely start protecting the basketball. Its the only way forward. We can win this game, but Im not sure we should be favored.

Looked at QU with my oldest on a road trip that included Marist, Fairfield and Iona. QU was 60% female with a lot of talent walking around the campus. He ended up a Flyer but remembers the QU visit to this day. By the way the late Ed McMahon was a big supporter as well as the Lenders Bagel family.

Down 8-0 to start and looking bad on both ends. Can you spell lethargic? Layfield with two fouls.

This stat sums up the first quarter: Harris and Layfield with no points, one rebound and 5 fouls. Seriously??
Why was Harris playing with 2 fouls, and contributing nothing?

Really sloppy pg play with to's. Need to rebound better. No way we should be losing. Q IS WITHOUT THEIR BEST PLAYER!

That is some bad basketball. Q is not a very good team, and we score 25 points with many missed layups and open threes. The starters gave us almost nothing on 3-16 shooting. One of Burdette's all time worst halves. One for four shooting and four bad turnovers.

Flyers down 29-25 at the half. Fortunate to be that close. Mostly bad basketball by both teams. Burdette with 4 of the 8 turnovers - and at least 3 were just headscratchers. I expect both teams to play better in the second half. Wilmoth is the leading scorer for Dayton with 8 - surprisingly including a pair of treys. Dennis with 6 boards and 4 points.

Some nights you just shoot poorly, but you have to make up for it with effort, defense and coaching. We drew blanks on those.
This team is in trouble. A blowout to a decent team, and a loss to a mediocre team.
We gave up too many offensive rebounds, which it somewhat due to Harris getting zero rebounds on the night.

A real team loss. No one really played well and Green could not seem to get anyone motivated to do something. Defense was bad. Offense terrible. Grade F

The coach can only do so much, it's on the players to be ready to play. Fortunately the A-10 looks quite week.

Amen. How does a women's BB team shoot under 50%?
But again, all our shooting was ice cold, so coach the kids to do the little things. We decided to do the little things near the end of the game. Coach cannot put up with that poor effort for three quarters.
At least our turnover number was better tonight.

First hand view....
I'm not going to comment....at least not tonight. I have a question though. Looking at the program QU provided I see that UD lists no freshmen. This is Green's second year....why no freshmen?

Greenes 2nd year but first recruiting class. When JJ departed the program we lost our incoming freshmen class, Sam Breen was the lone exception but then she opted out of the commitment in the 11th hour. There wasn't any remaining freshmen available to give ships to so Coach Greene opted to go for transfers and JUCO guards. Felt we needed experienced players.
Great incoming 2018, 2019 and 2020 classes shaping up.

Thanks Avid....I know next to nothing about women's BB at UD, although I follow the results closely. Last night's performance was dreadful. I see no excuse for the foul shooting. Many/most of the missed FTs were not close to going in. Only Wilmoth played well.
Attendance was reported at 500+...I don't believe that. If UD is averaging 1500-2000 that's well above typical women's BB. I don't know if the two game UConn series is still on now that JJ is gone. I hope it is..sort of.....good PR for the program. But I don't think it will be a pleasant experience for us.

Unfortunately coach jabir leaving is effecting the program this year. We just have to live with it with limited coach bashing.

I suppose that I still don't fully understand the lack of freshmen. It seems as if your explanation would show up as a lack of sophs, since going for transfers and JUCO players would have shown up in the class Green brought in last year.
Her second year of recruiting would have brought in guys that are now freshmen...and there are none. Whatever.
Re transfers, I know coaches have to be careful and ethical re "recruiting" transfers. But, I think it would be very wise to keep an eye on UConn players interested in transferring. The fact: UConn recruits the very best HS players...second to none. And every year a few more show up. It becomes clear....very clear....by the second year that a few of these kids just aren't going to get any playing time. As good as they are....starters anywhere else....they aren't going to make it at UConn. Some kids are OK with that. But quite a few are not...they want to play basketball. These are the kids that early in their sophomore year come to realize UConn is not the place for them.
Now I suppose this sort of thing occurs at all the top BB schools. But, UConn is pretty much in a class by itself as regards the talent it draws in. How a coach like Green can keep abreast of situations like this....i.e., potential transfer targets,....I don't know. But, Dayton has a very attractive women's program and provides an opportunity to play that a really good player may not have at UConn. Just a thought. But, after watching the UD players last night, help is needed.
We want to become an elite program....cracking the Top 25....in my opinion. And we have what it takes. We need more good players....better than I saw last night.

I think the lack of frosh has to do w/the recruiting cycle. You need to start recruiting kids as sophomores to get the ones you identify and want. Greene probably felt just handing out ships to kids she could only recruit for 8-10 months and have to make up ground on all the other schools that had a 2yr head start was not a smart use of scholarship resources looking long term. Warm bodies for bodies sake is no kind of solution. The JUCO/transfer route provides immediate help without the burden of 4yrs invested in a kid youd rather not have were you able to recruit their class from the beginning.

We have Bradshaw, Ward, Fowler and Chandler sitting due to transfers, so the jury is still out. All four were excellent HS players. So next year we pick up two sophomores and two juniors. Hopefully Fowler and/or Bradshaw can hit the floor running at PG, because we have nothing there next year.

Many thanks.....I knew nothing about that. So, four transfers next year plus a freshman or two.
I still don't know if the two game UConn series is "on".

Emphasis mine.
http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/spo...qUneFvG3GS2KM/
Q: How did you react to losing your only incoming freshman, Sam Breen, who signed with Penn State instead, late in the process?
A: In this business, you can’t get too high or too low. It happened. You move on. It is what it is. I really didn’t lose too much sleep over it. We just kept grinding and working. Anytime a new coach comes in, it’s going to affect your recruiting. You saw it on the men’s side. You saw it with us. It sometimes affects two years really. When I took over in September, all the 2017 class was done making decisions. The options we had were really junior-college players and transfers or fifth-year grad transfers who could play right away. I wasn’t going to take a kid just to use a scholarship. We were very selective on the players we recruited. We even dropped some along the way because we didn’t think they were a fit for what we wanted to do.
