Orebro Black Knights - Sweden

This news was just posted at Europlayers.com today. JJ will be going up north to Sweden for football in March. The team already signed QB Chris Ware from Eastern Oregon University (NAIA).

This still leaves two ex-Flyers from the 2010 team with resumes posted in Europe and JJ & Tino already signed!

Posted on 05 Jan 2012 - Former Flyers standout signs for Swedish team.

Former University of Dayton player James Vercammen have come to an agreement with Swedish football team Orebro Black Knights for the 2012 season. He will travel to Sweden in March to join his new team mates in time for the season that kicks off in mid-April.

Vercammen comes off an outstanding career at the University of Dayton (NCAA Div I-AA, Pioneer Football League), where he led the team in tackles both in his junior and senior year. With a reputation as a ferocious hitter, and a player that brings high intensity, he was a perfect match for what the Black Knights coaching staff was looking for going into the new season.

"Just watching film, you can immediately see that this is an extraordinary player", says Orebro defensive coordinator Henrik Dahl, "and of course you can’t ignore the fact that his statistical record is amazing. James is also a very versatile player, that will be able to make plays all over the field."

Vercammen's former coach – Dayton Flyers headcoach Rick Chamberlin – also has positive things to say about the 24-year old: "James Vercammen is one of the most explosive hitters we have ever had here at the University of Dayton. His athleticism helped him make plays from sideline to sideline, and some of them were the most unbelievable plays you could imagine. He brings a rare energy and passion to the game."

The player himself is looking forward to the adventure of going to Sweden, and reveals that he is already familiar with the surroundings: "I have been to Sweden two times before and I truly enjoyed the country, but mostly the people are what drew me back."

"I had some other offers from teams in Germany, but the Black Knights seemed like the best fit for me and their timeline also fit well for my schedule. Also, after talking with the coaching staff on the phone I knew that I belonged with the Black Knights", says James Vercammen.

In April he will play his first game in a Black Knights jersey.

"Early" Morning news

Never had any luck getting through to Charlie A but with Charlie B, I've got him trained to check Europe before I get up in the morning. Thanx Charlie!

There is no writeup for Devon yet and nothing on the "Hogs" site. This is great fun during winter/spring/summer for us football fans stuck in America!

Let's familiarize ourselves with the teams these ex-Flyers have joined. Here are the 2011 league records.

Vercammen, Sweden, Orebro Black Knights, 3-5-1
Langhorst, Italy, Reggio Emili Hogs, 5-4
Valentino, Switzerland, Calanda Broncos, 10-1

These teams have weeks off during the league schedule when tournaments are played in their country and also regionals. They hope to get extra games and invitation is by the point differential in league games which I believe leads to big scores.

Getting time to start practice

The Black Knight annual corporate meeting has been held and all matters covered that needed to be. Don't know if Vercammen is in Sweden yet, but it won't be long now.

Here's a paragraph from a site that was reviewing all the teams in that league:

Orebro Black Knights It has happened before to newcomers in the Super Series makes a great first season of the year after tearing pain with thin squad and quickly go down into the division system again. Last year's success newcomer Örebro working really hard to avoid the curse. And there is nothing to indicate that Derby skulla be about to implode. On the contrary, there have been many exciting notice from the Black Knights. It was early to finish with imports. Chris Ware, with a few bags of school records from Eastern Oregon, will play quarterback and the team's defense has been clear with James Vercammen with qualifications from Division I Player Vercammen at the same level in the Super Series as he did in college will, he will be an attraction for the Super Series audience with his physical pungent style of play.

(I doubt that the DDN ever referred to this "physical pungent style of play" that JJ possesses)

Orebro Website Hails Vercammen's Arrival

James Vercammen lands in Sweden

One of Orebro Black Knights U.S. acquisitions, James Vercammen, arrived on Wednesday to Sweden. After being flown from his home town in Michigan, via New York, he landed at last at the airport and received by parts of the coaching staff. After arriving in Örebro - a few hours later - expected visits to the gym, lunch and a first opportunity to settle in the new dwelling.

There was an expectant Vercammen who came to the airport, and he says he is looking forward to put on Black Knights-shirt. "It feels like winter has been one long road section, with a lot of training on their own, and I'm really looking forward to getting started and training with the team now," he says.

He has had time to see a lot of game film, and study both upcoming opponent in the Super Series and the Black Knights own game, and have begun to form an opinion about their new environment. "I understand that there is a rivalry with Carlstad [Crusaders, Editor's note] and it'll be fun to meet them in the very first game."

Orebro Black Knights other American import, Chris Ware, is coming to Sweden on the 27th of March, and both players will be officially presented at a press conference on the 4th floor, on Behrn Arena on Thursday 29th March at 1500th

Season premiere played on Behrn Arena, Saturday, April 14 at 2000, when Carlstad Crusaders come to visit.

Black Knights lose opener

Orebro opened their season playing last years Sweedish champ, Carlstad. They got off to a bad start and were trailing 0-14 before the offense started scoring. Their last TD was the end of the game to make a respectable score of Carlstad 29 - Orebro 25

Here are a few lines translated from the article by Eric Fielder:

Carlstad Crusaders, the reigning Swedish champions, however, seemed to do most things right. Team 0-14 were slightly into the second quarter.
- There may be some nerves that come into play. This is the first game of the season and there are many new players on the team. But still, it should not go to so, says the new American quarterback Chris Ware.

Nerves of Steel
But the trembling nerves in Orebro turned suddenly to steel.
The new acquisition James Vercammen tackled everything that was going to tackle.

Orebro Black Knights come short again

Another tough loss for the Black Knights, losing Saturday to Tyreso Royal Crowns 35-33. In the first two games this year, Vercammen's team has played both of last year's Championship finalists & lost.

After last week's first game loss, all news reports included praise for Vercammen's play (as was posted by Detroit Flyer). Way back in Feb., before JJ went to Sweden, I told that media group that they were getting such an outstanding tackler that for any opponent running the ball from scrimmage & staying within the boundary of the field that Vercammen would likely be in on the tackle. Further, that he would make the most tackles on Special Teams. Well, they read & watched his highlights on You Tube & ended up assigning a dedicated video camera on him the whole first game. They put together HIS highlights of the first game & it's worth watching even though sometimes you don't know where he is & on my hookup, there was some buffering delays. The translated paraghaph explaining why they did this & the link follows:

Curiosity at Örebro linebacker import James Vercammen has been very great. Highlight Movies on YouTube has been an explosive and rig willing player with rare good eye for the game. The premiere of Carlstad Crusaders corresponded Vercammen all expectations. He was everywhere and involved in everything that happened in Örebro's defense. In total, he noted the incredible 17.5 tackles. Of course, this is a performance which results in award of the Week player.

http://translate.googleusercontent.c...x6Shay9-RDTNUg

At the end of the highlight you should get a window of other videos. Chose the one with the guys sitting at a table. It is the after-game interview with both teams sitting at the same table.

Heads Up

Just a heads up that you may be able to see JJ Vercammen play Saturday.

Örebro Wizard sends the match live via web TV, starting at 1440, at the following address:
http://www.orebroguiden.com/guidentv/

If the time difference is like Germany, the game will start at 9:00am. If there is no daylight savings, it will be at 10:00am.

Orebro wins third in a row, 54-14

Hard to believe that just a couple weeks ago this Orebro team lost 27-16 at Uppsala. Picking the game up late in 3rd qtr, the Balck Knights were ahead 47-7, then 54-7 and the final was 54-14.

My first sight of J-J, #31, was when he did a forward flip over the top of a tackler & receiver already on the ground.

Behrn Arena is a nice facility, new for the Am. football this season. They were concerned about being able to remove the football lines after a game but that was solved. In fact, many of the soccer lines were removed so the field was less confusing than what we saw in Helsinki last Saturday.

When the game ended, the Black Knights lined up facing their crowd & waving to them while two stars of the game (they pick'em) run past with team flags. Then both teams line up on the field ten yards apart facing each other. The P.A. announcer has long introductions of one Orebro player who received a bouquet of flowers from a woman and one player from each team got a small plaque. Then the traditional hand shake as the players pass each other.

Uppsala is a university city but the football group is a club team; maybe using some school facility. The school website had no athletics mentioned but said: "Uppsala, knowledge and creativity since 1477"!!!

Cool Big accomplishment by Black Knights

After getting off to a bad start and trailing 20-7, the Orebro Black Knights came from behind to win 48-34 against the Stockholm Mean Machine at Zinkensdamm on Saturday, their first win ever there!

This is 4 straight wins for Vercammen & his teammates in the Super Series. Half the season, 6 games, remain and the boys are in high spirits right now!

Our boy injured; new replacement just in time!

This explains why when I picked up the 4th qtr of the Orebron game Saturday, Mr. Vercammen was not on the field:

Last week's victory against the Stockholm gave a somewhat bitter aftertaste, as clever linebacker James Vercammen injured knee. Vercammen has done an MRI this week and it was found then that he was fortunately not damaged the cruciate ligament, and there is thus a good chance that he will have time to be ready for play in time for the finals in July. He will not, however, to play in this weekend's match.

This next move was made before the injury but it seems to be a fortuitis one at that. They might play Morales at LB until James returns, but they have not seen him practice yet. Also, notice how slick the double citizenship pays off for Morales & the team. Yes, before every game the "imports" are checked out & helemts marked for the refs. Think that the Black Knights made an outstanding move which allows Morales & Vercammen to be on field at same time. Here's what the media says:

Christopher Morales
Weight: 118 kg
Height: 185 cm
Position: DE / LB
College: University of Delaware / Northwest Missouri State
Örebro's latest addition is called Christopher Morales, DE, most recently from Northwest Missouri State Bearcats (2011). He has also played with the University of Delaware Blue Hens (2007-2010).

The Blue Hens, he played with among others the Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco 2007th. While Chris has been on the road to the NFL like his former teammate Joe. Last winter he was at the test events of the Kansas City Chiefs, unfortunately for him, they were no more than that, but hopefully we who follow Örebro and see the Super Series as a win for us anyway.

According Örebro HC Peter Ericson is not Morales flown to fill the void left by Vercammen who was injured in the last game against the Mean Machines, and probably be back at the earliest for the finals.

When asked why they chose to bring in a third import answered Peter
"We just leveled the playing field a bit. Tyresö seems to be the team to beat this year and they've also produced three "imports", Kleinsmith, Gyunn and Winchester. "

When James ev. is ready for play for the finals can both be on the pitch at the same time because Morales is a Dominican citizen and hence get an "X" on the helmet and not another "A" which Vercammen play with.
The Super Series may only have one player on the pitch at the same time marked with an 'A'.

Thumbs up Vercammen's Black Knights End a Winning Season

JJ Vercammen returned to action last Sunday after his month recuperation from a knee injury. Black Knights won 27-13 against the Arlanda Jets.

But today it was different. The Orebro Black Knights were in the semi-final playoff of the Super Series and were completely manhandled by the Carlstad Crusaders, 48-7. Tyreso won the other semi.

Orebro was unable to win against either of these two teams in the 10 game schedule but beat the other 3 guys, ending with a 6-4 record.

Langhorst has been home, suppose JJ will too in a couple weeks and Valentino flies on the 31st.

It's been a great spring sport to follow via the internet.

JJ Update

JJ was named defensive player of the year in Sweden! Once the season ended, did he come back home to Michigan? Uh, no! It seems as though he has gone to Australia to play football there.... I do not know any of the details yet, but suffice it to say that this young man is certainly enjoying life to its fullest! I know that he is already signed to play in Sweden next season.
