IMO Duquesne's defense will seem like it's in slow motion as compared to Illinois State. This game Saturday should go down to the wire.

Radio or Webcast
Could one of you ol' wise posters out there tell me how to listen to the game? I am not in the Dayton area and will have limited access to the internet. If anyone has a good idea or solution, I would be extremely grateful. I listened to a game last year on the computer but I will not be any where near one during the game tomorrow. If anyone can explain to a tech illiterate person how to if possible I would be appreciative.

It will be interesting to see how this goes tomorrow. Forecast is calling for rain. The Dukes actually hung with ODU for a long time, even though the final score was ugly. I am not feeling good about this game. If the Flyers are going to have a better than average season, they need to step up tomorrow. I think Duquesne has more talent and playing at home they will probably win. Oh well, I will be sitting there in the rain hoping the Flyers can get it together and bring home a win!

You need an Internet connection. A smart phone will work. Google WHIO radio and click the link to listen live.

Think we are going to learn a LOT about our team today. The speed of the defense should be more what we are accustomed to. Should help our execution. On the other hand if we see the same mistakes at the skill positions.........(your own conclusion goes here).

7-3 halftime
won first Half 7-3, outplayed dukes in nearly every stat.Nearly twice the total yardage
Bardo completing passes, 12/19-146 yds
Johnson catching 5-87 yds
Jacob running 10-49 yds
Defense is sacking & covering
Bardo probably playing more like he does in practice & showed maturity in throwing a pass away & a T.O. to avoid penalty.
Now must clean-up fumbles ( 3- but none lost) & False Starts ""3""!
and...3 possessions inside 25 w/o any points. Missed FG seems to have cost confidence in kicking long ones.
Go Flyers, keep improving!

CBS All access feed is worthless today
The feed starts ...and stops...continuously on any pc I have tried despite my quick broadband connection.
No play-by-play audio on the feed either. Oddly, the pre-roll commercials and Duquesne promo video play just fine. Dammit!
Fortunately Larry and Coach Kelly sound great and the WHIO stream is solid today.

Left too many points on the field. Two missed field goals and a TD called back on a penalty.

Final 17-7 loss
Think that Duquesne woke up at half. After all, QB Sean Patterson & RB Larry McCoy were the stars of the Dukes come-from-behind win at the same field in 2010 when UD's defense couldn't hold for 2 minutes in a 35-31 Flyer loss. A loss is a loss whether you score 31 or 7.
The 2nd half was a big change for the Flyers. By my stats, Bardo was 9/23 for 86 yards & an intercept. Jacob only got 9 more yards in 7 more tries. Johnson had 2 more catches but only 11 yards. DU defense got tougher!
I guess I feel better. There was offensive improvement but only for a half.
So will this be Robert Morris' year to win next week? If UD can clean up the penalties & score something in the red zone (even field goals) then we have a chance to win the Home Opener.

While a win against RM would be nice, I believe out critical game is the league opener against the Dolphins. a good showing, read win, and we could be ok , if we can't score against them and get whipped then a long season could be in the offing. Just can't shake the feeling that we are regressing. Whether its players, coaching, tougher competition or what, something seems to be missing. I must admit that I am not a fan of the offensive scheme, haven't been for a few years now, but I realize that is a personal opinion and others may feel differently.

We beat ourselves. I was shocked that the field goal kicker missed one before the half, came out 11 minutes Before the start of the second half and only practiced 2 field goal attempts before the start of the second half. When we missed that first field goal.....it let the wind out of our sails !

Good football teams dont look for moral victories. winning a half doesn't mean anything. With our players we should be winning... period. in my view we did not get beat we just didn't consistantlly execute. Passing, Catching and tackling (and field goals ) although our punting was the best part of our day.
Lets hope everyone returns healthy for our first home game. See you in the parking lot.

We're entering a critical period for UD football
Well, it was pretty clearly our chance to show that the ISU game was an aberration--a step up in competition. Duquesne is not a step up.
Coach is now playing with a roster full of players he recruited and developed. Almost everyone on this board will root for the Flyers no matter what. We proved that last year.
That said, we are continually making undisciplined mistakes and taking ourselves out of ballgames we won when Kelly was Coach---starting with last season. The main virtue of Dayton football has always been that we don't beat ourselves. We seem to have lost that formula for whatever reason you want to pick.
Look at our PFL schedule and there are programs on the rise. Caution ahead.
Go Flyers. Beat Robert Morris!

Just not stepping up
We lost by 10 and left 13 points on the field. In a nutshell, we did not step up. Instead of finding a way to win, we found a way(s) to lose. Very disappointing loss. Sitting in the stands it felt like we dominated the game. Our offense was certainly better than last week, but still far too many mistakes. I am simply amazed at the number of dropped passes. Will does not always throw the most accurate passes, but I swear that at least six balls that we would have caught in previous years were simply not caught. Absolute drive killers. Missing those two field goals hurt big time.... I just do not understand why we can no longer recruit good kickers. And the defense.... Two weeks in a row we choke away the 4th quarter and allow big plays. Again, a matter of not stepping up. Need an example? Well, Duquesne stepped up. When the game was on the line, they made the big plays. The Flyers did not.... In general, we either do not seem to have the same level of talent as in previous seasons and /or we also seem to compound that by not making plays when we have the opportunity. I do not see any obvious answers other than what seems kind of obvious. We just need to play better and play all four quarters, (hear me defense?).

yes there were some balls that should have been caught. I would also argue that the passing stats were misleading. many passes that were caught we not receiver friendly throws. we had huge opportunities to get more YAC's but our receivers had to adjust, dive etc..just to make the catch. It's not all one player though. Ill timed penalties and poor execution on our side of the 50 wont win you many games at any level. I still saw a lot of arm tackling and guys slipping off of ball carriers, failing to break down and form tackle.

Too Many Mistakes
Clearly we played a much better game yesterday. I thought we out played the Dukes on the day. But two missed field goals, missed tackles, dropped passes, over and under thrown passes, and a TD called back were too much to overcome. The biggest one was the removal of the TD. I have been watching football for a long time and have never seen a personal foul called on an offensive lineman on a TD pass. That has to be a one in a million shot! It removed seven points from the scoreboard at a critical time of the game and we were not even able to get a field goal out of the drive. I am optimistic we will correct our ills prior to the Robert Morris game and play more consistently against them. GO FLYERS!!!

What was the deal on the personal foul? I think I read that it was an excessive punching motion by a lineman.... It looked like there was a bunch of pushing and shoving going on. Did we lose our composure or did we get hosed? Very odd call....

The following are a few thoughts and observations on the game so take them for what you think they are worth:
-Defense played pretty well and really did enough to win the game. They did let DU drive the length of the field for a TD late that pretty much put the game away but up until that point they had more than held their own. They even gave the offense the ball at the DU 23 but we got no points out of it.
-Offense had a decent start but faded badly. I think that was more on us than on DU adjusting because the "fade" was more due to poorly thrown passes and dropped passes. In particular, #1 dropped a high pass (tough catch but one that you have to make if you want to win close games) near the end of the game that would have given us a 1st down at the DU 15. Instead we had to settle for a FG attempt and missed it left. In addition to the drops I thought the effort from a couple of our receivers lacked a little late in the game. I wonder if rotating a few others into the game might help us down the stretch as we go forward.
-The line play and running game were decent but nothin to write home about. #5 was dressed but did not play. I think that without him being 100% we are a little below average unless we get someone else to step up and make plays. Over all I have yet to see anyone on offense really step up and excell. The QB shows flashes but makes some bad throws, the receivers generally make the easy catches (not always) but have not shown any ability to make the outstanding plays and the line does a decent job of pass protections but is not opening up any big holes for the run game.
-Special teams were decent but the two missed FGs were killers.
-Over all, unless we change the way we are playing I can't see us much better than a 5 and 6 or 6 and 5 team. We should be Valpo and Davidson but it is hard to see us winning more than 3 or maybe 4 of the balance of our games. Not trying to be negative but we have a long way to go in order to be really competitive with the better teams and we still have not show we can handle the mediocre teams at this point.

3rd Down Conversions
One of the big reasons we are not being successful is that we are allowing our opponents to convert their third downs 53% of the time and we are only converting 23% of the time. Statistically we are dead last in the PFL in both of those categories. I suspect that we will improve on both of those statistics throughout the year.
On a side note, it was interesting that the ISU team beat an FBS team pretty handily. I think they might be pretty good.

This is the diagnosis I feared. Teams don't just fall off a cliff usually. There is a drop off in Jimmy's and Joe's which in the long run makes a team come up short with playmakers. It's easy to point to a stat here and there as the culprit, but truth-be-known, talent (or lack there of) drives the stats. We had three overriding characteristics in our better teams. One, we had above average playmaking quarterbacks. Two, we had a handful of above average defenders. Three, we did not beat ourselves.
We still have an opportunity to right the ship before the PFL starts. Maybe some homecooking this Saturday will help.

A RB to Root For
Pioneer 8 has asked for a runner to "step up".
i suggest we root for #23 Connor Kacsor, a Red-shirt Frosh in Pre-Med from Leo High in leo, IN.
Connor was all-conf, all-state with 1559 yds & 23 TD going into his Sectional Playoffs. D-1 schools were watching & writing. Apparently only Dayton remained after he blew out his knee. So here he is, all kinds of potential but a terrific injury to overcome. His start in college is not so good considering 2 carries last week - a 1-yard gain & a 2-yard loss.
Connor comes with the best stuff since Taylor Harris. Now we need him to make some plays. Let's go Connor, I'm one who's pulling for you! And here's hoping Taylor's injury can heal too!

Just to be clear, I am not critical of any of the running backs. In fact I think #36 has played ver well and #23 had looked good when he gets the ball. My only point was that no one has yet showed the ability to be a "game changer" the way #5 showed last year when he was healthy.
