Media day is actually on August 19. The media portion starts at 12:30 PM followed by the tailgate party at "approximately 2:30 PM". The tailgate party is a whooping $1 per person!

Has anyone seen a practice schedule? In particular, do we know yet when they will have any scrimmages that might give us a peak of the team before September 1st?

Heard coach on the radio this morning. He said that the team will hold some practices on campus. This will be the first time that practice will be held on campus since 1984.

Since 1984.... I must have been studying while football practice was going on in 1984.... Back in 1984, they could have practiced on the old Baujan Field. Did he say where on campus? I'm thinking maybe Stuart Field? That would be a great location. Students could see the practice from many vantage points on campus. It just might help to generate some curiosity and ultimately support for the team. Maybe a prelude to playing football at Baujan again some day....

I'm assuming Stuart Field as well. Looks like Monday, August 20 is the first on-campus practice.

Stopped by practice yesterday. Helmets and shorts, calasthinics, some special teams work. Taylor Harris looked good (told my son that he was healthy). It was good to see them back in action. Probably will stop by on Sat and again on Sunday for a quick scrimmage.

I believe UD has a scrimmage this coming Saturday at 7:30. As I recall this is a game like scrimmage. If so, I plan to attend. Can anyone confirm?

I seem to recall that a football scrimmage is built into the schedule for the freshman orientation. (Maybe get some freshman interested in becomming UD Football fans). I printed out the orientation schedule, but I do not have it with me. I seem to remember that it takes place at Welcome Stadium, so if they are going to have freshman and their families attend, I would expect it to be game like.... I plan to be there since it is part of the freshman schedule after all....

You better be there! I think it's your LAST freshman orientation!
Best plan to stay over since the game is Saturday, Aug. 18 at 7:30pm. Yes, school seems to start earlier every decade. That's O.K.; it means football is earlier too!!!

You are correct....there is a 7:30 pm scrimmage on Saturday the 18th, think the coaches are trying to keep the kids out late till the parties are over.

That is what I thought. I went last year and there was a nice crowd for the first half (then all of the students and non-football parents left but it was a nice atmosphere and hopefully makes them interested in coming back once the season starts. Too bad we cannot sprinkle in a night game or two during the season. I would not want them to be a regular occurence but it might encourage the students to come out before they head to the parties. I suspect that there is a conflict with the Dayton schools so night games are not an option.
I any event, I plan to try and go on Saturday.

Night game conflict is with league not DPS. Night game would cost another night at motel!

How about non-league games? I noticed several PL teams have 7:00 p.m. starts on their schedules in their out of league contests and a few have them for league games. I am sure that you are correct on the travel issues but for some of the closer games (Butler for example) it seems like a night game would be doable without having to stay over another day.

Pioneer, you are talking like a fan. You have way too much pioneering spirit for this subject. Game-time is set for reasons other than fans. In big time D-1 it is set by TV networks whose money helps permit night games. In the PFL, you can go to San Diego for a 6:00pm game because the team would have to stay over for even a 1:00pm game. Otherwise it's pretty much like 1905 except there are 8 additional games; now that's being fan-friendly!
[John Carroll has a night game but it's in Ireland. They have 3 evening starts at 6:00pm at home (student-friendly). Mount Union has 3 night games.]

Anyone have advice for what to do this weekend for freshman parent? We hope to meet many at the tailgate on Sunday, but are there things to do on Sat too?

This link will take you to the activities for students and families this weekend. Saturday looks like it could be a very full day if you just hung around the campus. I certainly plan to be at the scimmage on Saturday evening and if all works out I will once again be serving up pop at the cookout on Sunday! My freshman is moving in on Saturday, so I anticipate being busy with that, picking up ID cards, books, etc. Of course I have to make it to the bookstore to take advantage of my lucrative alumni discount.... That and my inventory of UD shirts is starting to wear out.... Looking forward to a busy, hectic and hopefully enjoyable weekend in Dayton.

I know I am and I know there's a group young men that are chomping at the bit to prove that they are better than their record last year. I know my son is tired of me calling him twice a day to find out how practice is going!?!

Coach "Stepped Up"
Coach Kevin Hoyng "stepped up" to write & email a daily diary of the previous practice(s) to parents! A friend shared the emails daily with me. IMO this is truly a "breath of fresh air" for UD football. Would have loved this kind of communication a few years ago!
Thanx Coach Hoyng.
