Robert Morris Game...week 3
Grizzly old Coach Joe Walton won't be too happy when he arrives in Dayton this week. His Colonials don't have a win this season & don't have a win against the Flyers in how long?
Last year UD won in Pittsburgh 19-13. We didn't run much but completed enough passes for 212 yds & a win.The stat from that game that stands out the most is our 8 sacks & 1-int. It should be a good battle. Historically RMU have showed some "mean" tendencies, kinda reflective of a tough coach so watch for "dead ball" action.
The first game for RMU was at North Dakota State, last season's FCS champ where the Bison won 52-0 in front of 18,769 of their fans. Last week while UD was at the Dukes, Robert Morris was losing 35-10 across town at home against conference foe & last years NEC champ Albany.
I would think that RMU is looking forward to finally playing somebody their talent level & Old Joe is preaching that the week 3 opponent in Ohio is who it is. What do you think?

I've learned to take nothing for granted, I think all of us would have bet we would have beat Duquesne last week.

Each week we learn more about ourselves. We learned we can't hang with a top FCS team. We learned we match up well two years in a row with Duquesne, but we can't make crucial mistakes and win. Robert Morris will tell us a little more---good or bad.

Offensive POW's
I'm not sure if I saw this posted yet, but it is interesting to note that in the first two games, two offensive linemen were the Flyers' Offensive Players of the Week, LG Owen Elger in the ISU game and C Bill Petriolo in the Duquesne game. This is not a common occurrence and is indicative of several things. One of which is that our O-linemen are doing a good job thus far (of course I'm a little prejudiced). Both of these guys graded out in the 90 % + level in game 2. Owen graded at 88% vs. ISU. We don't hear anything about the O-linemen, unless they mess up. This is a good group.

I thought they played well against DU. Easily well enough for us to have won the game.

RMU
A source very knowledgable of the RMU program had this to say to me earlier today about what is going on - RMU is in a shambles this year. He predicted a sound victory for UD. There was more specific detail, but we will leave that out for the moment. Now, we need to take this with a grain of salt and not lose focus on the job at hand. But we should not expect to see the normal capability of RMU teams of prior years. Go Flyers.

RMU has played its first two games without their starting QB, who was suspended due to an offseason, off-the-field violation. He will be playing this week against UD.
This is also Joe's final shot at UD. He is retiring at the end of the season.

We were all over Sinclair last year. Even when he would slip away from our first tackler, he would get hit by the next wave. The defensive line had a much improved game last week at DU. Here's hoping that we see even more improvement this week vs RMU.

It is time to put together a complete game. First home game. Good weather. The kinks should be out. lets go. No excuses. Just execute.
Go Flyers!

Flyers 14 RMU 0 at the half. Very ugly half by both teams. RMU kept us in the game and we managed to make a few plays. Maybe a record number of personal fouls....

Halftime...UD-14 RMU-0
First, there will be a winner in this game. Second, the UD streak without being shutout reaches 400!
Bardo came within 3 minutes of being replaced. He was playing poorly & then all of a sudden started playing like in practice. Taylor Harris seems to spark the offense.
Defensively the Flyers are hot! What we are seeing is an RMU team & QB on it's heels & our D is having its way!
How about 4 RMU personal fouls in the 1st half? I said they are the dirtiest team we'll play this year.
Webcast is best ever with minimal buffering. They even have replays & two announcers. WHIO is 2 plays behind for me so I can't listen to Larry.
B4 game Kelly said if you get 10 up on RMU, they have trouble. We'll see since the home team has NOT been a 4th qtr team...yet!

Give backs
For a while we had as many TD's called back as we scored this season.
That cannot continue...can it?
Just before half we caught a punt in the sun & didn't fumble the run! good!
When we try a hurry-up O, the linemen have trouble adapting.
Poor Zach Elias had an intercept nullified by interference call.

What I saw & heard
My first good view of Flyer play in 2012...webcast was best ever & with work the announcers will even improve; they were not too sharp on penalties & numerous rules.
Must have been better blocking & tackling by us this 3rd game...
The place kick problem is still very present...
Bardo relaxed for a bit in 2nd qtr, then the passing was shut down in 2nd half as Taylor Harris carried the load & UD defense made enough stops.
Probably still too many penalties this season...today we played into the penalty mode of the opponent.
Larry rushed the stats but thought I heard we had 8 completed passes???
The consecutive scoring record of 400 games will continue to be challenged every game.
Hard to believe RMU's record against us. Mike K. said that when olde Joe retires, he probably won't travel to Welcome Stadium to follow future teams.

Thought the defense played well, except for the late TD. We seem to do that a lot. Fair running game but overall the offense doesn't seem to be a strong point. Kicking, what can you say. Game with the Dolphins will be telling. If we compete with them we could against Drake, Butler and SDU. Flop and it could be a very long season. Victories will come hard this year and I see around .500 at best, but you never know, that's why they play the games. Overall though we seem to be a middle of the pack team again this year. Maybe the lads will do better, hope they do.

it's time that out kicker does nothing but practice field goals ....day and night...and bardo is made to throw 500 passes every practice. Interestingly.....I've heard the players are not doing much weight lifting?

Water in Coldwater, Ohio
Is there something in the water in Kevin Hoying's hometown of Coldwater? Ball State QB Wenning hails from there and is having his way with the Hoosiers! Putting on a show!!!

How Does RMU lose 'em?
It still mystifies me about our success against Robert Morris; aren't we 13-2 now? We won with 8 pass completions for 75 yards. Our rushing was good at 173 yds but not spectacular. Then look at the 3 TD drives - 30, 42 & 52 yds. That might be the story of this season; that is, an offense that needs short drives to score and a defense with punting team to get the field position for this to occur.
The flip side is RMU who in 6 out of the past 9 meetings has more total yards than Dayton. A QB, Sinclair - very experienced but in his first game after a 2-game suspension - who heaves his longest career pass for a TD which was his 14th career game with multiple TD passes! Donte Jeter's 77 yd pass was his career longest. All this & only 14 points!
On the pregame show, Coach Kelly mentioned that RMU uses their 32 scholarships to get their speed from Florida. I say California too plus guys who might have trouble qualifying for academic aid. There are 11 RMU players from FL & 4 from CA on the roster.
Joe Walton coaches the 2013 season before handing the job over to coach-in-waiting John Banazak so Olde Joe has one more chance at home for a win against Chamberlin. After that Kelly doesn't think Joe will travel to Welcome Stadium to follow the team in future years.

I'm generally an optimist, salted with a bit of reality. This start has the feel of last year's success. Team's sometimes improve at a faster rate than others, I get that. But by an earlier post this was an RMU team in disarray that we should have thrashed.
Some troubling stats are the 100 yards of penalties, a pedestrian game of total yards, and the 9/20 completed passes---one of those to the other team.
Coaches sure have enough film to get the players attention, and impart some instruction.
Bring on the Dolphins!

Congrats to the team and the program for getting on the board with a nice win in front of a spirited crowd. It was a great atmosphere.
A fans scorecard through three games:
The team was a few plays away from being 0-3 or 2-1.
250 yards of total offense a game
run to pass percentage 54%/46%
43% completion rate
Time of possession disadvantage (not sure if this is an underrated stat )
zero points scored in the fourth quarter
Run first offense and a run first QB
IF #5 runs like he ran it is going to be very encouraging
what does this mean to an interested fan in the stands?
I think we are seeing it.
Lack of long sustainable drives
Opposing teams will coach against our one dimension offense and put pressure on us to throw
we arent throwing on first downs
Our defense is on the field too much in the fourth quarter
Penalties: too many. we are acting closer to undisciplined and poor decision-making than over exuberance.
So the team has a chance to build on solid defensive play and a pretty decent O-Line performance. But in my view if we dont figure out out how to kick start the offense, keep the ball and score points it's going to be tough.

Passing.... Or lack thereof....
http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.js...div=IAA&dest=O
After three games, our QB is ranked #82 in FCS for passing. Only freshman Kade Bell of Jacksonville, (coach's son by the way), is ranked lower than our QB in the PFL. As I have stated many times, UD simply cannot be successful without a high ranking QB, (able to complete passes). I had hoped for significant improvement from last year, but the numbers are not looking good. I do not know the answer other than to place this burden squarely on the UD coaching staff. Many things are just not right with our passing game and they need to be fixed. I just do not know if we have the ability or desire to make the tough decisions. Do we need a new QB? Should other receivers be starting? Is the offensive line not doing its job? Are the play calls not setting us up for success? Frankly, this is a dire problem that must be addressed if we are going to be successful. #5 simply cannot do it all by himself. Especially if we are one dimensional. Poor throws, dropped passes and odd play calling are all taking their toll. The data and the film certainly exist for the staff to take measures to correct these issues. Unless, we just truly do not have the talent.... I think we have the talent on the roster, we just cannot figure out how to use it to our advantage....

Against RMU, I thought our defense was stout. With the exception of the long TD pass, defensively we were very sound. In fact, on both TD passes from RMU, we must have been in full out blitzes because we were manned up across the field. If you don't get to QB in that situation, you are going to get burned. Also, our punting game is superb. In the first 3 games, I do not remember a single shank. In terms of the offense, as others stated our running game is good but our passing game is neurotic. We are either very good (e.g., long strike down the sideline before the half to setup TD), or are very poor (skipped passes, over thrown passes, dropped passes). I will say this, #1 Johnson is a very good reciever. He is fast and can jump out of the stadium. I would be trying to get the ball in his hands as much I could. Lastly, the penalties have been a big problem. A personal foul 30 yards behind the potential defensive TD negated it. The double illegal substitution penalties was unbelieveable. We were flagged then the very next play did the same thing (player ran from huddle, to sideline, then back to huddle). That one is definitely on the coaches. It was like we were daring the ref to throw the flag again! And he did!!! Looking forward to next week and how we match up against Jacksonville. One of their first 3 games they played "down" against an NAIA team. I optimistic we will be successful. GO FLYERS!

Scheme
I agree with most of the comments on here. The defense looked great throughout most of the game. We had great pressure from the front seven. We did a pretty good job from the secondary overall, but as a former db I cannot get over how many times it seems that we are not the deepest players on the field. Too many times we have had receivers running right past our corners and safeties.
I will hit on the theme of my post. Let me start off by saying I am by far not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to coaching football. I have been out of it far too long. I will throw this out there for comment. I think as a team we are way too rigid...
If the opposing defense lines up with nine in the box and we have a run play called...we will still carry out the run play or call a time out. If the db's are playing off ten yards, we will run a pattern that takes our players to them. No pitch and catch to set them up for later. We run a spread offense that really doesn't spread anyone. Just an observation, I saw that the RMU corners were cheating outside, taking away an outside release from our receivers so that the safeties couldn't get beat by a "go" in between the corner and safety. Our receivers kept trying to release outside into the coverage instead of going ahead and taking what they were giving them and then putting them on their back as they broke outside. We just don't seem very flexible or willing to adjust. I could be completely off base.
I may be a bit biased in this but #1 is a very good receiver, who I think will do great things. He just needs to worry about blocking, running good routes, catching the ball and making plays. The rest will take care of itself. He was a non factor on Saturday because he allowed himself to get doubled or passed off from corner to safety a lot during the game.

Can't disagree with much that was said above so I won't repeat the comments. The one "positive" that we may want to look for in the next few games is that the passing game was not too bad in the second quarter and the start of the 3rd. It was horrible in Q1 but started to click a little in the second. Once Robert RM scored on the opening drive in the 3rd it was decent again in our drive to answer (we ran it a little more that drive but we still threw it ok). After that we buttoned it up and went almost exclusively with the ground game while we tried to kill clock (probably says something about the coaches belief in the QB but it worked).
