Let Practice Begin
The NCAA rules allow for so many practices counted back from your first match. The beginning of classes also affects the first practice because you go two days until a day or two before classes start.
In the past, everyone pretty much goes on vacation or home to see their families about a week or two before they report, including the coaches and staff. TH has in the past had players report during a weekend so parents - especially freshmen - can come with their daughters.
My best guess is that will be the weekend of August 10-11 with the first practice on Monday, August 12th. Competition at several positions will be fierce. I pray we go relatively injury-free this year. It’s been a long time since we’ve had the entire roster available to play. Hopefully that evens out this year and next because we are loaded.

Volleyball’s twitter feed on Sat aug 3 says it begins in 5 days - so looks like reporting day is August 8th this year. Go Flyers!

First practice starts Friday, August 9th. 15-days until Pittsburgh exhibit First Service on Hausfeld Court.
Go Flyers. If we can stay healthy, it’s going to be a great season.

Day one in the books. Looks like Senior Jordan Albarran’s right foot is in a boot. We’ve been hit hard with injuries the past 2-3 years. This is the most talented team UD has ever had. We’ve got to stay healthy to reach our potential. Let’s hope it’s nothing serious. Jordan wasn’t in the starting rotation last year but played a key as backup DS and OH.

Current video out on vball twitter shows Liz taking a short serve and passing it to the setter spot. Liz does a nice job...but look who was ahead of her...Jamie, who is walking back to get inline. It looks like Jamie is also practicing serve receive which lends me to believe she is working to go 6 rotations.
Last year we were short on OHs who could go all 6 rotations which would have given us a backrow attack. Most matches we had no backrow attack. We used DS subs for the OHs for the 3 backrow rotations. It was one area we needed to work on in the off season. Ideally we need two OHs that can go 6 rotations so we have a backrow attack option to keep the opponents’ block guessing.
About half way thru her freshman year, Jamie was playing 6 rotations. She also improved during the spring of her freshman year but then had the shoulder injury. It’s great to see she is still working on these skills. I believe both Allie and Mikaylah were also noted as 6 rotation options coming out of high school. It’s tough to do coming in as a freshman, but both have been with the program a year and between all three we should fill this need, in addition to CC transfer Irina and Jordan.

USA VB’s Megan Courtney
This is pretty cool on a bunch of different levels. Alter alum & Penn State alum and current USA Volleyball’s starting Libero Megan Courtney - who just got home from competing with the USA team to qualify for the 2020 Olympics - stopped by the Flyerr’s practice this weekend. What a great thing for the squad and what an inspiration.
Courtney was an All-American OH for PSU, but is now the starting Libero for team USA. This iS also probably the result of our great Associate Head Coach Alyssa D’Errico also being a PSU alum and professional player. We are so blessed to have Alyssa on staff. And give TH the credit for hiring her and promoting her to Associate HC.

I forgot to mention that Megan Courtney wore a purple ribbon in her hair while playing at Penn State. She did this in memory of Kacie Hausfeld after she passed away, also an Alter volleyball alum that was a couple years ahead of Megan in school. Class act.
Mitch Lush is also an Alter grad who played men’s volleyball at tOSU. He is their current Dir of Ops for the men’s team. TH’s step son is a sophomore vball player at tOSU. So his participation at UDs practice was probably via TH’s invitation.
And everyone listed above are all cousins of Kevin Bacon.

This is interesting. Sometime between 2008-2010 they put down a new floor that was suppose to be better on the athlete’s body. With all the injuries in recent years - exspecially injuries that resulted in athletes having to wear a boot on a foot/ankle/lower legs and crutches, I was going to ask Horsmon if he thought that floor wasn’t exactly as advertised when it was purchased. (The decision to buy it was during the TH1 era and installed after he had move to Maryland.)
I’m still interested in that answer, especially now that there appears to be a new floor installed.

I don’t remember Kacie’s #14 being on the old court...but I could be wrong on that. It’s a nice touch. I like it. The red looks a little deeper. It might be the camera and lighting in the video. It looks good in the video. Someone who goes to the Pitt exhibition will have to let us know.

What's special about the new surface? Honest question...I'm sure theres a good answer. I know nothing about vball courts. Are you allowed any rebound in them like a gymnastics floor exercise surface (but less dramatic)?

Her number wasn't on the old court. I also noticed it right away in the video.

Last night I looked up some info on the old court - a Robins Bio-Channel court. Here is what the Flyer website said at the time it was installed:
“The historic Frericks gym floor that once provided the base of the court has been replaced with a state-of-the-art Robbins Bio-Channel court. The Sports Court surface has been removed in favor of a return to the hardwood. The multi-layered surface helps reduce the toll on a player’s body during the explosive movements in volleyball.”
On the Robbins website last night I only found one reference to the product being used specifically for volleyball - a picture of a volleyball court at Washington. The company currently has three versions of courts to install pending the usage, but no mention of volleyball. It appears to be highly thought of for basketball. Michigan, Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina have the courts plus several NBA arenas. The following was noted:
“Bio-Channel floors have exceptional shock absorption, ball bounce, vibration damping and great load-bearing capacity.”
Prior to the Robbins Bio-Channel surface, UD had a Sports Court floor for volleyball. These are still used in collegiate volleyball. About five years ago the NCAA bought a bunch of these to use in the tournament. They are a highly portable polymer-type court that is laid down in large sections. The NCAA ordered theirs in light blue with the NCAA logos on the floors and they ship them into the regional sites and the Championship site each year, so after the first weekend every team plays on the same surface and the NCAA gets all the branding benefits on tv.
I can’t make out what TH says on the video about the brand or surface of this new court. Based on the pictures, it’s clearly not wood, although it looks like off the court they maintained the Bio-Channel wood surface framing the new surface. The new court appears to be a return to something more like a polymer-type surface. I’m trying to find out the exact band name and it’s advantages.

It’s probably Taraflex. Their website is written about 80-90% volleyball usage starting with a big picture of the 2016 USA Women’s Volleyball team standing on one of their courts at the Rio Olympics.
From their website:
“Taraflex is the best volleyball surface in the world” - John Cook, HC Nebraska
The product has up to three layers of high density foam backing.
Safety - Taraflex prevents long-term debilitating injuries for athletes.
Protection - Impact Protection Index (IPI) measures the property of the floor that reduces the risk of immediate injury for all users when falling, diving or sliding.
Taraflex has the highest IPI on the market - 88%
I did see one down side to this product. The website said it provides acoustical benefits. Reducing player injuries vs. reducing the noise volume of Red Scare?
I’m sure it was a close call to go with the new floor.

Good to see Jordan’s boot is gone this week and she is dressed out at practice. She’s front row, far right.
