Just a thought... maybe this is one of those "soft commitments" where the player stays committed but is looking to still take some visits.

Bashir's older brother Muhammed has a year left at Miami Dade JUCO before he'd be eligible and he's probably being recruited by some D1 schools as well. No idea if Dayton is interested in either or both. But assuming Iona really wants Bashir, it's never good news (for Iona) when these types of things come out, even when the recruit maintains he's still committed.

Potential package deal for Luther brothers at Pitt?

Well, we kind of knew they were fishing for something, didn't we?. I doubt Archie has another spot open for a guard.

I'm thinking Ryan has been offered a scholarship and Connor a preferred walk-on role with Pitt.

I don't know why AM wouldn't offer the same deal if he truly wanted RL. Why would the family pay tuition at Pitt when Colin has full ride's available at many schools? Why would Ryan want to play behind Sheldon Jeter for 3 yrs? Interesting if this happens.

Yes, interesting is right. Jeter started as a freshman at Vandy two years ago. Hard to imagine he'd be easy to displace in the Pitt lineup.
Then again, maybe they could be viewed as occupying different positions?

Sadly I agree...
If there is one thing I am not worried about is Archie and recruiting. If Luther decides to go to Pitt or somewhere else, I have full confidence that Arch can land another good player or two. God forbid he landed Dyshawn towards the end lol

Perhaps he is waiting for a BCS school to whiff on their first and second priorities. Maybe it's just me, but I would rather be a "lesser" school's first choice than a better school's third or fourth choice.

I'd disagree. I really think the kid is just trying to make his decision, not that he is waiting for something. It's going to be Pitt, Duquesne, or Dayton.

Its getting late but Luther should be making his decision anytime soon. Should Dayton get Luther he would be the cherry on top of an already iced cake.

not a surprise at all. When he waited it seemed pretty obvious to me where he was headed. It happens, like when Huggy swooped in on Harris two years ago at the last minute or MSU with Bess. Luther is a little more understandable due to fact he is from the Pittsburgh area.

Maybe he figured he had a better shot of getting playing time early against Sheldon Jeter than Pierre.

his chances of getting playing time at Pitt next year are slim and none...much better opportunity at UD even if he's playing behind 1 or 2 guys and then in each recruiting cycle, Pitt because of the ACC affiliation will continue to attract interest from 5 star players...Luther is a much better fit for Duquesne or Dayton and I think that's why we read some recruting experts, "surprised".

Mike White wrote an article around a month ago where he felt that Luther was a strong lean to Dayton. Obviously things changed and its hard to compete against the draw of the hometown school. Will he get lots of PT and be successful at Pitt? who know but I wish him the best as I am never going to get on someone for picking the hometown school.

For what it's worth, this isn't a fluke signing. Jamie Dixon got to the table late, but he really worked this kid. He believes he's an ACC talent. Don't be surprised if Luther sees the floor more than Jeter over the next four years.

Curious whether the twin brother ends up at Pitt also. Hard to argue with Pitt as a choice, but if it had been Duquesne?--hmmm.

Forgive me if posted previously...
Found this link when searching for info on our newly committed Guard Darrell Davis.
He's the 2nd player talked about in the article. Seems to be all good news for Flyer fans, but check out the other offers sentence...

Enrollment wise they are the bigger school, state school with state funds available. But the comparison stops there.

Stefan Jankovic
Stefan Jankovic is a 6'11" 242 soph PF who announced this week he is transferring from Mizzou due to lack of playing time. I'm not suggesting we have a chance or interest in landing him, but his family lives in Toronto and he played on the Canada U19 national team with Dyshawn Pierre (and Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos). He spurned offers from Purdue and Georgetown last year to play at Mizzou. This preseason, Frank Haith said "I think Stef can be one of the best shooters in the country. He shoots the ball that well."

That's a good point! That means he could start playing mid-season next year instead of sitting out a whole year next year. Would he lose a year of eligibility doing it that way, though?

he'd be eligible 2nd semester next year as junior. So 1/2 a junior year and a full senior year

this few games counts as an entire season as far as the NCAA is concerned (unless you are fat and out of shape ).

He used one year as a frosh and one year with his 26 minutes so far. If he played starting in January that is year three. The following year is it.
So 1 and 1/2 if he played mid year. If he wants to play 2 full years he needs to sit out all if next year.

Really like his answers when talking about going 9/10. Sounds like an all around great game, don't know the level of competition.

I was at the game and was impressed with Steve. My buddy and I talk with him before the game and thanked him for choosing UD. He is a soft spoken young man and seems excited about joining the Flyers. I think the strength coach needs to get him in the weight room and add about 30 lbs of muscle on him. The program had him listed at 250, so take off about 20 lbs of baby fat and replace it with muscle.

Thanks DJ. Based upon the pictures I've seen of him and viewing him from across the court when he attended for the IPFW game, I'd agree. W/ the development of Scott and Robinson (plus whatever they get out of Gavs going forward), the good news is that he doesn't have to be thrust into the fire next year, but given a handful of minutes to spell those 2 in the post and the ability to earn more time thru his play.
IIRC, he has already lost like 50-75 lbs to get where he is today. Combine that with him having played football this season, and it tells me that he's more than a kid that plays basketball just because he's tall, but plays sports because he's competitive. That seems intuitive, but a guy like Kenny Frease always struck me as a guy who played basketball because he was big and tall and the stories I heard off the court, as well as his conditioning told me that he never loved it, never strived to be as good as he could have been.
I assume the competition was several inches shorter and probably gave up several pounds to him down low, but how did his low post offense look? Seems that big guys w/ an over the shoulder shot like Kareem's skyhook or even Sean Finn's baby hook is a lost art on so many campuses and NBA arenas. I know the game is getting more and more wide open w/ face up 4s and even face up 5s. I still think there is pleny of room for a guy w/ great low post skills that can catch the ball on the block and put up a shot that can't be blocked (ie Sean Finn and his 70% shooting clip his junior season)

He did go up against 3 different guys all athletic and about 6'7. He has a very soft touch around the basket but didn't see him take any shots outside of 6 feet. I think he his athletic enough to develop those outside shots but I don't think he is as quick down the floor as what sean finn was.

thanks, at his size, I don't UD ever needs him to take a shot beyond 6 foot (though it certainly would help if he could make it) If he can shot over either shoulder w/ a nice post up game, he's got the physical size to be a force.

9 for 9 from inside six feet if a very good sign. We had a center who would have missed 4 or 5 of those.

After reading that, are we a small fish in a big pond that doesn't have a great shot or what's everyone's thoughts on him?

According to that link, we have offered Matt Moyer, PF, class of 2016.
And we have been in contact with Xeryius Williams of Wayne, who has no high-major offers.

Interesting that Percy Gibson is only getting Gavrilovic-level minutes and production on the 14-0 Iowa State Cyclones. Pretty much pushed to the back of the bus. LaDontae Henton is doing much better for Providence. Cornell Mann must be doing his thing well for ISU.

ISU is really good. Gibson has never played much. Henton has been a 30 minute a game from the day he got to Providence, they just haven't been that good.

Providence is 10-2, not having beaten anyone good ( LaSalle), but plays UMass on Saturday. Henton is fourth in scoring, which may mean they have finally got some better players.

I think they moved him to the bench this year but he seemed like he started in years past but was inconsistent. Some games he'd score 10-15 points, others nothing

Indiana freshman center, Luke Fisher to transfer: http://www.insidethehall.com/2013/12...will-transfer/
Top 100 recruit who has shown some glimpses of his ability this year. He was recruited / offered by Dayton. He'd be a great addition.

From The Crimson Quarry "Word on the street is that he was feeling homesick during the fall semester and is looking to find a place a little closer to home.".... Don't think Dayton Ohio is any closer to Wisconson than Bloomington Indiana... But one can hope! Sounds like a solid kid and a good player....

I prefer this version from the post. After all University of Dayton IS family!
“Luke has decided to withdraw from Indiana and pursue another educational and basketball opportunity,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said in the release. “He explained to us he is looking for a different fit for him. We hate to see a fine young man like Luke leave, but he has made his decision and we wish the entire Fischer family well.”
UD = right fit, right family.

Omari Spellman and Kyle Ahrens were at the USC game but I didn't see the two sitting behind the Flyers bench for the Murray State game.

I thought Spellman had an interest in the west coast. He may have gone to watch USC on UDs dime.

Spellman is class of 2016 and has an offer from the Flyers. At 6'8" 230 lbs he would be a welcome addition. Haven't heard if he is interested in USC.
Ahrens, class of 2015 from Versailles High School, is a 6'5" shooting guard and has an offer on the table from the Flyers as well.

In the Washington Post write up of the GWU - Kansas State game yesterday, the GWU coach said that KSU's Jevon Thomas absolutely refused to let them get into their offense. He got into the GWU point guard and refused to let him get anything going. Is this the NY kid who was coming to Dayton but had some issues and Archie "told him not to bother"? Interestingly, Thomas didn't score in the game.

He was the NY kid who refused to come to UD after he signed his LOI. Archie never didn't release him from his letter as far as I know. He ended up going to another prep school last year and had to sit out the first semester this year.

Sorry to hear that about Ahrens. I suspect that UD will still stay active in recruiting him. It will be interesting to see if some major schools back off as a result.

Prett sure Milker released Thomas, unless he was able to reclassify as a senior again. There was some kind of announcement they had payed ways. Assume that included a release, maybe with sn agreement to wait a year to enroll. Have to sit out two years if you reneg on an LOI, unless that has changed in last few years. Thomas is a talented head case.

Spellman is a local kid to me. I may have read it in a local paper. He spent time in NYC before moving to North Royalton. I think people speculated he would go back east but I remember him saying something about interest in the west. I was impressed with him as a freshman. I would love to see him in a Flyer uniform.

I saw that there was an article on http://dayton.rivals.com/barrier_noe...sp&cid=1603946 about UD recruiting a JUCO wing player. I'm not a member, so I couldn't read the article.
I could be wrong, but I don't recall UD having much of a history as far as having JUCO's is concerned.
Recruiting a JUCO could also show some urgency on the part of the coaching staff in terms of having a player being able to step in next year and be able to really contribute right away vs. maybe having to wait a bit longer for a freshman recruit to really contribute.

They were looking at Javon Bess in the fall at SG/SF so it sounds like another wing has been the works
They could return everyone and a JUCO would still have a chance to contribute

Hmmm - you might be on to something. It's rumored Oliver, Kavanaugh, and Sanford are toast.

Flyers are woefully short in the 3/4 slots. They could use a 3 that can shoot and a 4 that can defend and rebound.
Pollard is a bit of a tweener that can't shoot and is a better defender on the perimeter than in the post.

That would be good news. We have to either replace Oliver, or get a 5 who can play and move Robinson, et al to a 4.

I've made the point before that I thought recruiting wasn't the problem with the UD men's basketball program.
So, I think the below information is relevant. The site verbalcommits.com calculates the average number of stars for every d1 roster, I don't believe walk-ons are included in the calculation.
Anyway, UD has the 2nd best star average in the A10 behind VCU.
All of these teams are within .8 stars of each other. I'm not sure how significant of a difference .8 stars is.
But, I do think this shows that recruiting is not UD's problem.
http://verbalcommits.com/schools
The list of schools is sortable by school name, mascot name, conference name, # of stars, and website name.
VCU 2.859 stars
Dayton 2.778 stars
UMass 2.726 stars
George Mason 2.611 stars
St. Joe's 2.564 stars
SLU 2.514 stars
Rhode Island 2.500 stars
LaSalle 2.429 stars
GW 2.403 stars
Richmond 2.250 stars
Duquesne 2.153 stars
Fordham 2.141 stars
St. Bonaventure 2.000 stars

Interesting to see the successful teams hovering at 2.5 stars...SLU, GW, Richmond. Were these kids overlooked out of HS or actually developed by their current coaches?

Smart getting it done
Shaka landed 3 top 100 recruits for 2014 class.....I'd be happy with one.
Creighton =1
UNLV = 3
SMU =1
Xavier =1
Marquette =2
There is one left unsigned a former teammate of Kyle Davis.

You also have to breakdown those recruiting rankings. A team in any sport has to recruit to their needs but can't get too top heavy with a certain position group. We seem to have trouble in the A10 against teams with good BIGS. What were the BIGS ranked that UD got? Outside of Robinson and Scott, and not sure I would call them highly ranked BIGS, has UD really ever gotten a highly ranked BIG?I believe that Huelsman was ranked pretty highly, iirc, but this was a guy that, imho, BG ruined because he made him get too big and heavy. I know a couple HS coaches who raved about him at the state tourney and thought he was a serious athlete and a STUD BB player...
Don't think Sean Finn was much coming out of HS...KW was a walk-on for crying out loud....

Recruitment at UD
under Archie IMHO is very good. It is the development of players that is weak. This is especially true for the bigs. UD has two of Ohio's top high school performers from Columbus who have become hat racks at UD. Their hustle stats are negative numbers because they do not exert themselves on the basketball court. Kavs (5th year senior) and Gavs run the court and move their bodies. The others are just out there on the floor. When a loose ball is on the floor they stand and watch instead of diving for the ball. They do not protect the rim on defense because it is too much work. No new shots have been developed. One of the guys looks as though he prefers the perimeter to the inside game because he is a poor jumper. Why not work on jumping and weight loss to improve jumping skills? This UD staff does a much better job of developing perimeter players than bigs. The only exception is KP who has developed into one of UD's best post players when others were injured. But at 6'6" he is a bit undersized for the position.
