Purdue beats IU to clinch the Big Ten. Two teams in opposite directions. Will be interesting to see if somehow IU pulls it together to get a bid.
Meanwhile Purdue is not a top 10 team, but capable of doing damage if you cannot handle their size. They would not be a good matchup for us.

Yuk. When someone says NCAA and Purdue in the same sentence, all I can think of is Brian Cardinal and how we got jobbed at the finish line by the refs in Tuscon. I don't wanna play Purdue. Bad karma.

Full night of hoops:
Rhody @ St Joes (seems like the Phiting Phils play everyone tough despite the injuries, but keep on losing, which is expected given all the injuries; they've lost 9 of their last 10, 6 by 10 or less, which is remarkable given what they're facing)
GW @ Fordham, not sure if a seed in the A10 tounry is on the line or not
Richmond @ UMass Richmond is on pace for the 3 seed if they win this one.
Michigan @ N'western
Arkansas @ #12 Florida
Duquesne @ Mason
LaSalle @ Saint Louie
BC @ #19 ND, BC played 'em tough a week or so ago in Boston, doubt it happens again
Ole Miss @ Bama
KState @ TCU Probably want TCU to win here
Marquette @ X Can a giant boulder just fall on the Cintas and wreck both programs
Mich St @ Illinois Illinois is starting to show up on the bubble, MSU may be fighting with UD for seeding. If UD wins tonight, go Illini, if VCU wins tonight, go state
#10 Louisville @ Wake, want the Cards here
Nevada @ San Jose St, Nevada likely needs to win the MWC tounry to get a bid, but they are the only at large candidate, unless they drop this one.
Wazzu @ So Cal So Cal is slipping, but still this is Wazzu at home, they'll win

I heard Chris Mack say that the recruiting final 2, for Xavier starting center Rashid Gaston, were X and UD, and he said that Gaston made the right choice. Gaston transferred from Norfolk State with one year of eligibility, after having to sit out last year as his transfer sit out year.
Well, we will see what happens. At least in terms of this year's NCAAT, Gaston might have been better off at UD, as UD might get a better seed in the NCAAT.

Zavier just gave up a record 95 points at the Cintas Center in a loss to Marquette on senior night and the announcers still don't think they are on the bubble.

Of course Mack is going to say that. But, in some ways, I think Mack is right. I mean, Gaston may not have started at UD anyway. And he'll probably get a few more chances to showcase his skills, either by starting the NCAA Tournament with the play-in game in Dayton, or by reaching the finals of the NIT.

Wisconsin looked horrible. Just kept jacking up shots - and missing. Iowa outscored them something like 12-1 in the last 3 minutes to win by 2.

Replay of the crazy, full court, inbound pass by NW to beat Michigan at the buzzer...that win might have punched NW's first ticket to the NCAAT.

hard to believe the last week of the regular season is upon us. Feels like yesterday we were wondering if Kostas would be allowed to suit up. Anyhoo, lots of big games this weekend, conference tournaments for many get kicked into high gear as well:
Illinois St, Wichita St and Monmouth all are heavy favorites in their conference tournaments today, all should win, a loss by any may end their hopes at an at large bid. If they all win, the same likely holds true tomorrow as well.
#24 Iowa St @ #10 WVU, lets go Huggy and perhaps the Flyers can slide into the top 25
VMI @(vs?) Samford
Gardner Webb v Winthrop in their semi-finals
Saturday:
Providence @ St John's..Go Johnnies
Pitt @ #23 UVA (go pitt, but still fell free to eat $%*&)
Illinois @ Rutgers must win for Illinois Bubble hopes
Texas Tech @ KState, KState is closer than Illinois, but still this is a must win
Bama @ Tennessee
Mason @ VCU (want VCU to win, remain top 25)
Mich St @ Maryland not sure who we want to win, probably MSU
Georgia @ Arkansas Georgia popping up in bubble talk, Arkansas in for now, go Dawgs
Cal @ Colorado, Cal failed to show up vs Utah, may be left behind
#12 Florida @ Vandy
#19 ND @ #9 Louisville, just because
X @ DePaul, I'm kind of amazed that this is even a thought at this point
S. Hall @ #13 butler, BU is likely safely ahead of UD no matter what, so root for them
Creighton @ Marquette, want Marquette here I think
TCU @ Okie, While on the Road, TCU needs this one for sure
S Louie @ Richmond, would be nice for SLU to win and get Rhody up to the 3 seed
UMass @ Bonna
GTech @ Syracuse The Rambling Wreck of Georgia Tech
#25 Miami @ #15 FSU Miami already won over UNC this week, so unless they get pummeled, no shot of passing them up I'd think.
#1 Kansas @ Okie St, want Kansas here to get ahead of Okie St in the rankings
Davidson @ rhody, Rhody is safely top 50, but a @ would give them room to drop one in Pittsburgh and remain in the top 50.
Washington @ USC, USC is in a slide, Washington sucks so I expect that to end
#17 Duke @ #5 UNC just because
Colorado St @ Nevada I think this is for their 1 seed, and Nevada's hopes at an at large bid
Mercer @ East Tennessee St
So Carolina @ Ole Miss, want Ole Miss here for sure
SD State @ New Mexico
Sunday:
#18 Cincy @ UConn
#16 Purdue @ Northwestern
#26 Minny @ #22 Wisconsin
Michigan @ Nebby

Illinois State survives Evansville... Aces cut it to 4 with 53 seconds left, but that's as close as they got. Bubble teams breathe a sigh of relief.

Belmont
With an RPI of 63 and no top 150 wins (0-4), Belmont's 59-65 loss to Jacksonville State puts them squarely in the NIT
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-bas.../_/teamId/2057
Also, Portland snapped a 16 game WCC losing streak, beating San Diego 60-55 in the opening round of the WCC tournament.
Next up: #20 St Mary's College.

I'm also rooting for anyone playing a team that's near Rhody in the RPI. I want Rhody securely in the Top 50, to make our 2 wins over them look that much better. For the same reason, I want teams near VCU (not named Dayton) to suck it this weekend. Need to keep that as a Top 25 win, if possible.

This game is ugly. Turnovers, double dribbles, shots bricked and clanked left and right, missed lay-ups, double technical fouls, etc. This is the Loser Bowl. DePaul has lost 17 of its last 19, and X has lost 6 in a row.

Unfortunately I can't watch that X game. They don't televise mediocre east coast teams on the west coast. What a shame.

By "last year", you could mean either March of 2016 or December of 2016, and in either case, you'd have an astute observation.

Yee-hahhh! Go Commodores!
Also, since Florida was rated in the Top 5 in the RPI, that means Vandy's RPI should move 3-4 slots in the right direction for us, right?

Under 3 to go. SLU tied with Richmond. Massive A-10 seeding implications re: Rhode Island/Richmond on our side.

Richmond would be the 3 with the win. They own the tiebreaker over URI.

Tie game 10 seconds left and URI has the ball. Hopefully they have a better play than they did against us.

Rhody gets a 5 second violation. Davidson gets an attempt to win it but McGarrity is blocked. OT
URI got back in it after being down but they are just like their coach and have no poise.

Horizon League:. 9 seed Milwaukee beats 1 seed Valparaiso... 10 seed Youngstown state beats 2 seed Oakland.
Real possibility of another Wright State Horizon tourney run now.

I saw that Xavier fell a few spots on the Dance Card even though they won...down to #43, last team in is #48.
Could have been more what other bubble teams did yesterday.

It's not always what teams do that causes them to gain spots or fall, but what other teams around them do. Look at the teams around X, most are trending up with much better wins than DePaul. X had also lost 6 or 7 in a row before yesterday. Even with the win they are trending down. The BE Tourney will be huge for them.

I meant to say saw...not swear...the auto-correct on this computer is very annoying.
Also, I added in a comment about what the other bubble teams did.
I think they have to beat DePaul and Butler to get in.
They are 0-6 vs. the rpi top 25.

No chance of Dayton playing Wright State in the NCAAT unless there is an upset...HL tournament winner will probably get a 13 or 14 or 15 seed.
Seems unlikely that ÙD can climb up to a 4 seed for a potential 4 seed vs. 13 seed, first round, NCAAT match up, after the GW loss.

I don't think anyone was saying that or even thinks that matchup would be possible. We were just commenting on the fact that the 1 and 2 seeds are both already out of the Horizon tournament. Some of us know the correct team to root for (NKU) while some people (SMH at BRob2Perryman3) think it would be okay for Wright St. Wrong School to win that tourney.

Why are people treating Wright State like a rival and refusing to root for them? If we refuse to play them, they can't be a rival. The Raiders are from Dayton and I'm absolutely rooting for them.
Please note: My kind words for the Raiders have nothing to do with the fact my wife went to Wright State and that she could be looking over my shoulder at any moment.

Going into today, Dance Card had Illinois State out...2 spots below the cut line.
Seems like only the winner of Illinois State vs. Wichita State will get in...buy maybe Wichita can lose and still get in, I do not know.

We should want SW Ohio to be viewed as the hotbed of American basketball (NOT Raleigh/Durham, NC), so as hard as it is to do and say, we should always want UC, XU, UD, Miami and Wright State to make the NCAA tournament...and tOSU.

I'll typically root for Wright State, but I'm having a hard time wanting them to win this year. I know several WSU insiders that don't particularly like the new coach or AD. On the surface, last year's coach (Donlon) was wrongfully fired. He wins 22 games last year and over 20+ wins 3 out of the last 4 years and that's not good enough? Talk about unrealistic expectations. Donlon is a good guy and good coach even though he had a few irritating words about playing Dayton.
Wright State winning has basically no negative impact on Dayton. We don't recruit against one another and if we do Dayton wins 99% of the time. After all, we came in late and stole Marco Pikaar from them.
And I'll always root for any team playing _avier. I never ever want them to win a game.

I just can't stand the WSU fans. The way they always talk about UD has always annoyed me, especially when they try and say they are equal to UD.

We recruit against a lot of those schools. I do not want any of them to have success if there is even the slightest chance it hurts UD. And I NEVER want XU and TO$U to have success in any sport.

Years ago a restaurant owner was asked why he wanted to put an eatery near the Dayton Mall that already had soooooo many restaurants. His response was simple....he wanted to put a restaurant 'where all the hungry people are.' because then they could pick the best place, and he thought his was that place.
UD should think the same. We should want every great basketball player to come to SW Ohio and let them pick the best place to play. Is there any doubt we have the best facility and fan base? Bring them here. All of them. Especially those hungry to play and win.
King Rollo the Common Sense Explainer....OUT!

Donlon was given 6 years, the program was on the upswing when he took over after Brownell left, and Donlon could not get WSU to the next level...he lost the HL tourney championship game at the Nutter Center while being favored by 6...he lost the HL tourney final 3 times...Donlon was given a fair chance.
WSU is like any other program, they want to win and go to the NCAAT.
The new hc is the most qualified hc that WSU has ever had, he took his previous school to the NCAAT 3x.
We will see if he can lead them to the promised land.

I pulled for them when they had class acts like Michael Davenport, Tyrone Hill, etc. playing for them. Once they started getting asshats like West, Burrell, Crawford, and the Gangsta Twins, I was done with that program.

Okay...He didn't win the "big" game, but I'd like to know if there's been any other "clean" and "decent" coach that was fired after winning 22 games the previous year.

Sorry, but West is NOT and was NOT even close to an asshat.

I have seen the attendance, and actually attended a few games in the last couple of years (Free tickets was the only reason) I have never heard the typicaly 4000 to 5000 announced in attendance make so little noise. Flyer fans at road games are louder.
Having said that, I would love to see Wright State be successful on the court, in their league and NCAA, and at doing a bit better job filling their arena on game day. Plenty of room in the Dayton area for two successful programs.

This. They trash UD and our fans all the time. Can't stand them. Now get this - they think the DDN is biased against THEM. I used to get pretty worked up just reading their board so I stopped reading it.

I personally don't want Wright St. gaining any traction in basketball because it just means the DDN writers other than Jablonski will recycle their Gem City Jam articles more than they already do and we'll have to hear about playing them on MLK day on here more too.

Back to a game of note that was important today. Monmouth lost to Siena in the MAAC tournament 89-85. The Saints were down 39 to 25 at the half too.
Why was it important? We don't have to watch any CBS features on the Monmouth Bench Mob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The DDN is a thing of the past. Other than the links people sometimes post here, I never read it, nor does most of the world these days. When I do, I get to laughing so hard at the stupid grammar and spelling mistakes by so called professional writers. A hack like me could do a better job! As for the renew the gym city jam crap, the conversation will happen regardless. Get Wright State into the top 50 RPI consistently and I might even be convinced, until then, no way.
By the way Ctime, thanks for bringing up the Gym City Jam again, do you work for the DDN?

A bit of cry baby. Supposedly a good guy, but the tears and the fact he went to X = asshat. There have been far worse though.

I will partially agree with you that Donlon's firing might have been unfair. I was more objecting to calling his firing unfair. I would say his firing was maybe more 50% unfair and 50% fair.
The thing is that WSU's rpi took a dive after Brownell departed. Brownell delivered a sub 100 final rpi in each of his 4 years. Donlon never delivered even a single sub 100 final rpi.
So, maybe the administration felt justified in making a change due to the downward trajectory of the program...and the failure to win the big game as I mentioned.
And they landed someone who appears to be a well-qualified coach.
We will see.

Looks like NC will have 5 or 6 and Ohio 3 or 4. Don't worry you are better in football, the less important sport.

WSU is like any other program, they want to win and go to the NCAAT.
The new hc is the most qualified hc that WSU has ever had, he took his previous school to the NCAAT 3x.
We will see if he can lead them to the promised land.

Well they lost in the quarterfinals to NKU.

Yeah, DallasFlyer, that was my point. Perhaps "asshat" wasn't the best term to use to describe David Waaaahest. "Crybaby" or "brat" may have been more appropriate. But, with all the whistles that went in his favor when he played us as a Senior, I just felt like he was "Patient Zero" as far as _avier Asshats were concerned.
And while there have been some more recent Mouseketeers who deserved and received my respect (Cage & Thornton, to name a couple), there have still been some real jackwagons (Reynolds, Macura, The Gangstas, etc.), and it seems like "The Parade of The Asshats" began during the time West was in uniform.

UIC beat the 3 seed Green Bay...so 5 seed WSU would have been the highest remaining seed...teams left: 10 seed Milwaukee, 9 seed Youngstown State, 6 seed UIC, and 4 seed NKU...looks like maybe another missed opportunity...NKU may make the NCAAT in their first year of eligibility after having moved up from d2.

If you choose to play basketball for X = automatic asshat. I don't know why that's so hard to understand.
