Week 4: A-10 2017

So I finally got to watch a volleyball match in person this year. I'm in DC, so I was in attendance for GW's five set thriller over Delaware. 25-20 24-26 25-12 21-25 17-15. I'm not sure it was a BIG win for GW. Delaware seems like they are having a down year, but nevertheless, it was a win against a fairly close school.

To be honest, I think GW got some help from the refs to win the last two points. Both of the last two points were line in/out calls and they both went GW's way. The first was when the game was tied 15-15 and Delaware was serving. After a rally, Delaware's kill attempt was called long by the line ref. I was sitting near this line so I feel pretty confident the ball was in by a foot, but the ref called it out. No complaint from Delaware but the Blue Hen fans were pretty stunned. So now it's the 3rd match point for GW. This time it was a Colonial serve by Skylar Iott. The ball was hit near the right side line. I had a less than favorable view of this call and the ref had a much better angle. I thought GW's shot was wide but they got a point and the match. Very exciting ending. You just can't enjoy moments like that unless you are there in person.

I thought Delaware had the best player on the court. Delaware's Maria Bellinger had a great all around game; powerful swing, good backrow D and passing, and comfortable attacking out of the back row. Delaware had some other good players but Maria (h% 0.295 and 14 digs) really kept them in the match. Bellinger had a really nice tip over a GW block that was in place and ready. I was expecting a big block from Kristel Moor, but Maria placed a soft tap over the block and GW's back row didn't stand a chance. GW's best performance was from Kelsey Clark. Clark (h% 0.714, 1 SA, 1 SB, 4 BA, 5 D)is listed as an OH but mostly hit out of the middle, I think. She seems like a leader on the court. She had a great dig early in the game and her kill to tie the match at 11 in the 5th stood out to me. She doesn't have the big jump and swing that both Amber and Kendyll Brown have. Kelsey is creative, knows where the defense is, and can turn some poor passes into points. Kelsey placed her kill in the 5th off the only blocker in the middle. No one else was nearby and the Delaware middle just couldn't make a play so the ball dropped to the court for a point. Freshman Marianna Warren played well too from the RS. I didn't know anything about her but she impressed. She had a nice kill against a double block. 15 kills, 0.417 h% is pretty good for a freshaman. If she stays healthy, she should keep her spot hitting from the right pin for a few years. Just the type of player GW needed after the graduation of Maggie Skjelbred.

GW used two setters. Neither jumped out to me as the clear favorite. I guess they use this style to have plenty of offensive weapons in the front row and because they feel comfortable with some of their OH's and middles in the back row. Jordan Young provided a calming presence off the bench. She subbed in during some GW low points and helped keep them in the game with decent passing and a handful of kills. She had GW's last kill that gave the colonials match point.

Elsewhere, Rhode Island with a nice win over Dartmouth in New Hampshire. They actually look kinda good with a sweep of Delaware, a win over Clemson, and now this win over Dartmouth.

Saint Louis moved back into the "this team doesn't look good" category with a loss to DePaul. I'm actually starting to question if they are in the top 6 of the A-10. DePaul at home felt like a good chance for a win.

Fordham also played the Ivy League, but lost to Columbia.

Duquesne played admirably in a 3-2 loss to Ball State who was picked to do well in the MAC.

Other than RI, GW was a bright spot with two wins. They also beat Holy Cross in the afternoon.

George Mason defeats Hampton 3 sets to 1. The Patriots pick up their 3rd win, but still look like the 10th place team in the A-10. This win does help the Patriots keep their distance from the true depths of the RPI.

La Salle fought hard but ultimately got swept in 3 sets against Colgate. Colgate has a good reputation in the Patriot League, so La Salle's performance is encouraging. (18-25 19-25 26-28) The Explorers were close all match, but most of the time Colgate still looked like the better team. This one was a free live stream by the PLN, so I was able to watch. The broadcast shorted La Salle to LSU in the score on the bottom. That was amusing. La Salle had a lead in the 3rd but couldn't finish it off. Gravers and Corah both scored points to keep the match alive. Bryana Davis anticipates well defensively when she notices she won't need to block. She dug a nice cut shot and was prepared to dig a deflection off the La Salle block. I hope Corah and Gravers learn from her during her senior year.

VCU and Seton hall are in set 3. VCU has a 2-0 lead and need only one more set to win the match. Based on the live stats, the defense has not been strong. VCU is hitting 0.396 and Seton hall is hitting 0.305

Seton Hall has defeated VCU in set 3. They will play at least one more in Richmond. All of the sets have been close today. If you remember, Dayton made short work of the Pirates.

Seton Hall has a big lead in the 4th. Pirates up 9-3 but VCU still leads the match 2-1. Seton Hall's H% just climbed above VCUs 0.308 to 0.301

Seton Hall is out to an early lead in the 5th 6-2. They have built a wider game in the hitting pct margin as this match has gotten longer. 0.333 to 0.282 I bring this up because VCU's twitter was bragging about a 0.400 hitting percent earlier in the match.

Timeout VCU. They are down 7-2. The now need a huge comeback to win the 5th.

A kill by VCU's Gina Tuzzolo and 3 Seton Hall errors have brought VCU back into the set. They only trail 8-6. Timeout SH

VCU has a huge turn around in set 5. They get a big win for the A-10, since Dayton and VCU are the only good teams.

VCU over Seton Hall. 27-25 25-20 23-25 19-25 15-9
