Any updates would be fantastic! I saw the first set. UD played well despite the loss. Real high level volleyball.

Drop out of the top 25 this week. Target off their back and can concentrate on A-10.

Another very disappointing performance. Dayton has been getting killed coming out at the half in these last two tournaments.

K-State wins ugly 3rd set - 25-15 for a sweep.

Oodles of errors.

UD loses set 25-15. sorry but Dayton is no top 25 team. Back to the drawing board. They won the first two weekends because no one knew what to expect. Now that the opponents know Dayton they're no match for top 25 teams.

Lets hope they regroup for the A-10. Right now that is not even a given.

NCAA Tournament

I think the Flyers can win the A10, maybe even go undefeated. I think this may be the year that we go to the Sweet 16 as well. Yes, the first few matches no one knew what to expect, but we are playing a tough schedule for a reason, to be prepared for November. No matter what happens in the first couple of weeks its about November and I think this learning expierence, coupled with being able to "practice" against a couple of A10 schools, i.e. La Salle, will help us when it comes time for November. We know what our mistakes and weaknesses are and we can practice and improve them when it gets time for the conference schedule.

None of these results have surprised me other than how well WKU took it to us. You look at our losses: OSU, Minnesota, and K-State. These are all more established programs than we are with way more history. They are all probably more talented too. Not like we are on the same program level at these schools. We arent. We arent on the same level as Pepperdine and Illinois either, but we won those.

So all things considered the only team we might have lost to that was inferior to us was WKU -- and WKU may end up being ranked this week or next making every one of our losses to Top-25 teams. Four Top-25 losses, two Top-25 wins both at home.

That's about where this program is. When you climb the ladder its one rung at a time. You dont go from being Dayton to being Ohio State or Minnesota in one season. Its a long progressive march. Two steps forward one step back. Beating ILL and PEPP were our two steps forward -- a new level the program had never reached prior. The latest losses are the one step back.

This is how it goes. We are really good, but going up against these BCS schools with all of their resources and money and recruits will almost always put us at a disadvantage. Or at the very least force us to do more with less.

I still think we're probably #20-30 nationally. It should come as no surprise that we won the big matches at home and lost them on the road. This is typical of a program in transition. The next step is winning them on the road away from your own gym. Its not an easy step however. Just ask the UD mens basketball team. Theyve been trying to jump that hurdle for 25 years.

Kansas State just had one heck of a weekend. They are 12-0. They upset #10 Minnesota before they played us today. They will jump way up in the polls this week -- into the Top 15 if not into the Top 10. I've always like their coach. She was Lindsay Fletemier's A2 coach the first year Linds played A2.

Nothing Dayton did this weekend was disappointing and every match they played will help them down the road -- including with their RPI come tournament time.

The OSU match was disappointing because it was another 5-set loss. The WKY loss should not have happened, but so far it's the only "bad" loss this team has incurred this year and hopefully they learned from it.

I agree. Coulda had that OSU match. But, we've still punched our NCAA at large ticket thus far with Illinois and Pepperdine. Out of five big matches, we won two of them (were probably underdogs in all five based on personnel, not rankings), and we lost to WKU who might be as good as we are.

So I think we're slightly ahead thus far. No other UD team has beaten the likes of ILL and PEPP before. We just need to get better and take care of the A10. As Becky said our RPI will be fine.

Of OSU or WKU however Id want the OSU match back. One more big win would have more than covered up WKU and kept us in play for a possible seed. Right now, we will have to almost run the table for that.

Got back from the Tulsa match, sad we lost but the ladies gave it their all. Attending was very strange as my wife and I were the only two UD fans there, with about 250 KS fans, in a beautiful 8,500 seat arena. When we walked in and sat down up behind the UD bench by ourselves Shef and and the team all looked back with surprise and a smile that their fans had arrived. Shef said something like, "Glad you came we will need you today."

We played really well and even the first set. We had them by a couple of points until it got to the late teens. The same Flyer hit two consecutive soft balls that were easy KS points. We seemed to lose it or KS gained it from then on. The second set was well contested, but the third was all KS.

The difference between the Flyers and Kansas State was the big hitters. Pelger was just slightly better than Krabacher, but KS had 3 or 4 other players that hit bazookas and UD had...? nobody. Many balls KS hit were not returnable because of velocity, while all ours were that were not well placed.

Bottom line KS may be a final eight team for all we know. We are 1-2 players away from playing with that kind of team.

Kudos to our ladies on the bench, who never sat down and cheered the entire match, while the KS bench acted like they were at a chess match. A lot of matches to be played yet, go Lady Flyers!

Nice observations jack. I think we can play with a team like that now if we play our best. But, our serving has to be really good to keep them out of their primary offense. And our serve receive has to be really really good so that we have a ton of three option passes. There are some bazooka hitters on the way for next year

We especially took ourselves out of the 3rd with out of bounds serves and weak serves. Not only was KS's best player unstoppable at the net, and only 6'2", but her serve was great. Great to hear we have some strong hitters on the way. Height is nice, but speed kills.

This was not a disappointing weekend. The Tulsa win was great. We were not favored and the Flyers swept Tulsa. That win was EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE. Don't forget about this match because that is what this team is capable of. Don't just say, Dayton should have swept an unranked Tulsa team. That was a very good team and on the road. It is a victory this can look back to when they need to remember how strong of a team they are. We went into Tulsa and made them look like the 125th best team in the nations when they are closer to the 40th/50th best team in the nation.

Kansas State is not the 19th best team in the nation. They are a top 10 team. Maybe even a top 5 team. I was only able to watch the first set, but both teams were playing great volleyball. Neither team was playing sloppy. We weren't playing them during a poor set. We were hanging right with them during their best volleyball. Dayton had a few passes off of the serve I didn't like that forced us to only set Rachel, and it was obvious Kray was getting the pass, and the K State block was ready. Other than that, Dayton's first set was great. Kansas State will be a fun team to watch as they will only not be favored in 3 matches. At Oklahoma, at Kansas, and at Texas. Those are the only matches standing between them and an undefeated record going into the tournament.

Dayton's win against Illinois wasn't a top 7 win. We can't keep thinking like it was. Pepperdine on the other hand just beat Ohio State and Florida State. They are a top 20 team that we beat.

Dayton's loss against Western Kentucky was bad because we could have played better in sets 2,3 and 4, but looked worse because they were not ranked. They should be. That was not a bad loss and it was not an upset given Dayton being on the road. That is a top 25 team. They just went to Michigan and beat a top 25 Michigan team in Michigan. They are for real. They also beat Duke on a neutral court. Western Kentucky's only losses are to Louisville and Penn State. I think those can be forgiven.

I still think this team can reach the sweet sixteen. Their performace against Ohio State says that. Their sweep of Illinois says that. The 4 set win against Pepperdine says that. The way we took the first set from WKU on the road says that. And our sweep of Tulsa definitely says that. This team is somewhere in the 20-35 range. The Flyers will see a lot of different teams in the A-10 and they will get chances to improve.

I agree. We have played great competition, won some and lost some. I still believe that traveling three weeks in a row gives you less time to improve on weaknesses during the week. I hope nobody has given up on the team because I still expect them to win the A10 and win some matches in the ncaa tournament.

Illinois and Iowa State are examples of two teams that I expect to be very strong come tournament time. They split with each other (1-1) two weekends ago when they played at Illinois. Then ISU knocks off #1 NE and ILL beats TX this weekend. Before those two upsets, their Figgie RPIs were in the 100's.

It use to be there was a big drop off between the top 5-6 teams in the country and everyone else in the rankings. As more and more young girls start to play vball, the talent pool has gotten deeper. And there are more top-level coaches because this is truely an emerging sport. Last year, for the first time in probably ever, there were 15+ teams that had a real shot at the Elite Eight and the Final Four. This year, although it's early in the season, it seems the field is more wide open than ever before. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
