Per WH of the A10 board:
http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...naventure.html
ST. BONAVENTURE
The key to the Bonnies success is to play better defense (12th in the A-10 in FG% defense); get stellar point play from senior Ogo Adegboye; find a few more shooters to replace the departed Chris Matthews; keep Andrew Nicholson out of foul trouble; and get more production from Nicholson's frontcourt partners. He's been a one-man show over the past two years.
This Bonnies team is hard to guage. Nicholson is the most gifted inside scorer in the A-10 arguably since David West played at Xavier. He is a dominating force - so long as he stays out of constant foul trouble. Coach Mark Schmidt has also added a bunch of athletic forwards, giving the Bonnies one of the bigger frontcourts in the league. We just have to start seeing Nicholson's frontcourt mates produce consistently.
Ditto for the backcourt. On paper the Bonnies might have the least talented backcourt in the A-10 with the exception of Fordham. If the college game is truly a guard's game, the Bonnies have to get a great year out of point guard Ogo Adegboye, the juco transfer from a year ago. Athletic off guard Michael Davenport has to step up with improved shooting and scoring.
Schmidt recruited some promising young guards, it appears, but it's hard to expect freshmen to give Nicholson the perimeter support he needs to be able to operate inside without double and triple teams. Still, the new guards could be the key to whether the Bonnies flirt with a 20-win season. Matthews accounted for more than twice as many 3-pointers last year as the rest of the returning players combined. That's a huge hole to fill despite obvious shortcomings in Matthew's overall game.
I am taking a conservative stance on Bonaventure given questions about the perimeter. Nicholson is so good, however, that he could put the Bonnies on his back and help the team defy relatively lower preseason expectations.
NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE
W - At Canisius
W - ARKANSAS LITTLE ROCK
W - At Cornell
W - At Binghamton
L - At Cleveland State
W - BUFFALO
L - At St. John's
W - NIAGARA
L - OHIO
L - Va Tech (Rochester, NY)
W - SIENA
W - MARSHALL
W - At Arkansas Little Rock
NONCONFERENCE RECORD: 9-4.
The Bonnies start with a rivalry game at Canisius, which is never an easy place for them to win. Canisius is young and inexperienced, so this is the time to get a win. Arkansas Little Rock lost 22 games last year but was competitive in most contests, even vs. bigger name schools. Strangely, the Bonnies do a home and away with UALR this season.
The team goes on the road for the next three games.Cornell lost most of best players as well as its coach after last year's fantastic season. Bonnes are bigger, more athletic and more talented, so they should win as Cornell reverts to Ivy League form. Still, Cornell is now used to winning and you never know.
Binghamton is still recovering from a major scandal a few years ago and is still down. Cleveland State, however, should bounce back from a .500 season and take down the Bonnies.
CSU has a terrific point guard (Norris) and a fleet of big guys and athletes. Classic Gary Waters team.
Back home the Bonnies beat a young Buffalo squad before heading to New York City. The Johnnies return all five starters and are a better team. Chance for an upset, but I go with the Big East.
The Bonnies then hold a five-game homestand. Niagara has owned St. Bonaventure lately but the latest edition is very young. Bonnies eke out a home win. Ohio, however, still has a lot of talent left from last year's NCAA team and they get after Bona on the perimeter to pull the upset.
Va Tech flies to Rochester for a big game. This might be the best team Seth Greenburg has had at Tech. Excellent guards and a solid frontcourt. They beat the Bonnies in a close one.
Siena and Marshall both lost some great players and their coaches from last season. Each is capable of beating the Bonnies but I give the home team the benefit of the doubt. Neither Siena nor Marshall has the kind of backcourt talent to truly exploit the Bonnies' biggest weakness.
St. Bonaventure finishes up at Arkansas Little Rock. A very winnable game that the Bonnies might have lost a few years ago. Not this time. Andrew Nicholson avoids foul trouble on the road to carry the team to victory.
BONUS A-10 PREDICTION: 6-10 (15-14 overall)
The Bonnies pair up with Duquesne, Fordham and Rhode Island, which replaces St. Joe's. Last year the team went 5-1 against these teams, owing to a 3-1 record vs. Duquesne. I could see the Bonnies going 4-2 or 3-3 vs. these opponents.
The Bonnies also go on the road at Temple, GW, Dayton, Richmond and St. Joe's. I have a hard time seeing St. Bonaventure winning any more than one of these games.
This is a tougher sked compared to a year earlier.

Per BG on the radio pregame, Benson starting in place of Searcy tonight. Spearman also for Williams, who will not see much action.

If you have the alternate FSN Ohio channel, it's showing the game until the X/Cavs games end.
Sounds like they had a new video/music opening for the starting lineups.

A little more energy in the offensive sets. Seeing a lot of slipping of the screens and cutting to the hoop more. No easy baskets in the halfcourt yet though. Transition ball is helping us a lot.

Yes. We are seeing a much inferior opponent. We are also seeing an elevated energy level from anyone who gets in the game for the Flyers.

Only been 5 FT's in the game. UD has 2. They are certainly letting them play today. Fouls 8-7 UD.
I will agree however, this foul descrepancy early in games is hurting us. I think it is more than bad officiating or an abberation. It is now a trend that is indicative of our lack of post play and ability to drive. We are jumpshooting team that shoots poorly.

I get it, we are all frustrated. But you asked a question and SDF, myself, and many others answered you thinking you were seeking information. If I knew it was rhetorical, I am sure myself and others would have read it for what it was. You jumped down SDF's throat when all he did was give you what you asked-some information.

Let's see, there is only ONE guy who can beat you and you can't guard him in man so of course you go zone and double him right
Heck, that's what they would do in CYO elementary games.

1. I sincerely hope I didn't jump down SDF's throat. I respect him too much to act in that manner.
2. You are correct, we are all frustrated. Let's face it the score is 26 - 23 at half and we should be dominating them.
3. Let's hope that by some miracle this team finds a way to turn things around.

I don't know much about St. Bonnie's 3 point shooting ability, but you have to consider doubling Nicholson and hope they miss some 3s. He is the only reason the lead is under 10 points.
Although, I could dominate in the post if I was allowed to move my pivot foot constantly.

Stretching for something good in this game, the one thing that occurred to me is that the game is being won by next years team.

I thought CW played good defense on him early. The 2 fouls hurt as we didn't match up well against him down the stretch. I couldn't see who it was, but he backed someone right down, turned, layed it in and got fouled. Like he was playing his little brother. CW might be the only one who can play defense on him.
We have 4 guys with 2 fouls. Might we see a zone to protect fouls and stop Nicholson? Nevermind!

I understand the need for great defense...
but 26 points in the first half to a second-tier A-10 team is just an abysmal performance. It is the same old thing...perimeter passing and eventually flinging up a three-ball! I see no flashes into the paint; I see no screens and back-cuts; I see no running the base line with passes from a penetrating guard. I see very little penetration from the guards at all. I understand our big men are not as good as most in the A-10, but if you don't use a strategy on offense to get them the ball down low, then how do we measure how good or bad they are? This looks like the Richmond game to me. St. Bonaventure is going to pound it down low in the paint every time in the second half. I don't like where this is going. We have no answer for their paint players. One final note - this is a real test for that "wear them out with substitutions" theory. Personally, I don't buy this theory. With the fact that the Bonnies don't use their bench, I am interested in seeing if they tire or not. My guess is they won't tire.

Glad to see Oliver get a chance. Couple of good moves, couple of dead ends, but he's good.

That was Luke that he backed down. You have to try something different on him...or just keep going and hope we eek out a close win.

The announcer keeps calling Nicholson "the man of a thousand moves." I prefer "the man of a thousand pivot feet."

I thought it might be Luke. Not a good matchup. Nicholson has 2 fouls. Lets go at him.

excellent end to the first half and opening sequence of the second half. Maybe we shouldn't even go into the locker room at the half. Just stay out on the court.

A 9-0 run to open the second half. BG's halftime adjustments are working like normal. The Bonnies are going low and if we double-team they are going to create an inside-outside game. I actually do recall BG mentioning that the last time I ever heard offense come from his lips.

Did anyone else mention that the glare from the video boards can be vividly seen on the floor on the tv broadcast? It's a little annoying

When Dukes says CW is one of the top 5 "finishers" in college, is he referring to his dunking ability? Because he misses about 50% of his layups.

Is Fab not allowed to shoot with a man in his face or is he just nervous in that situation? Parker/Johnson/Williams have no problem.........oh nice follow up jam by CW......taking those shots.

Does CJ get an assist on that CW dunk?? Off the board? It actually looked like CJ was passing it to himself, but Wright beat him to it.

I'm going to cry some more....how many times is St. Bonnie going to grab the ball out of the net after a made basket and flip it away from the hoop before a delay of game warning.
