Ohio Match
They are 3-0 after the first weekend. No problem with Murray St and Southeastern LA, beating both in 3. It took 5 sets for them to put away Stamford.
They have a freshman setter from Italy. She set her team hitting .307 for the weekend. Not great completion, but still a good number. Most impressive stat is they are digging almost 14 per set and even more impressive is they have 5 players that played all 11 sets this past weekend and are averaging over 2.36 digs per set. That's good defensive coverage and will challenge our hitters to find the floor. We are averaging almost 15 digs per set lead by Margo's 4.26 per set. (such a superstar). We have 3 other players over 2.18.
They only blocked a little over 2 per set. But, I will add when you play weaker teams you don't have as many block opportunities. It's hard to block a free-ball. We've seen that in past years when we've played weaker teams like LaSalle.

Jessica Sloan doesn't look to be playing. I hope it's nothing serious.
Edit: she has a boot on the left leg.

We looked mediocre in first set but squeaked out a win largely thanks to OU hitting serves into the net 6X.

25-16 bobcats in second. We looked terrible. Could not kill balls at the net. Maybe the loss of Sloan is hard to overcome.

Bruns with a career high 52 attempts, and Erhahon had a career high of 11 block assists.

I didn't watch the whole match. I saw some of the late 2nd set where Dayton really struggled. I saw some of the 3rd where Dayton was very dominant and some of the 4th. My favorite play was Dayton's 18th point in the 4th set. Maggie S. made a point saving dig and did it in a way where she moved the ball so quickly to Jane. Amber made an easy kill. In the blink of an eye the ball went from almost being down on Dayton side to right in front of Amber's hand. It was perfect. Very nice win against a team that was clearly doing a lot of things well.

Not sure how much to take from this match for both teams. It was like a MASH unit out there.
Flyers were down 3 starters - Peterson (arm not in sling anymore), Hubacek, and Sloan (wearing boot). Bobcats lost one starter at the end of the first set and another at the end of the second set - both looked like possible serious knee injuries.
All the injuries put a bit of a damper on the match and is not really a fair comparison of the two teams. We really had nobody but Bruns to hit from the pins and she seemed to know it and relish her role as the match wore on.
Got off to a 11-1 lead in set 3 - much of it due to good blocking - and that pretty much put the match away.
Flyers or opponents - one hates to see serious injuries

I didn't see the match due to working late, but you have to like the blocking numbers we put up. And we can get better at it. Blocking is a "pairs" skill, so it takes work to close up the block along the net and know whose arms are going where. We should be a very good blocking team, so the first step is to put up some big numbers and then work to consistently put up good numbers. Nice to see the first step during the Ohio match.
