Red and Blue Game Observations

I know it's early, but before I forget I thought I would start this thread so we don't have the observations spread around a few seperate threads after the game.

In past years I put the Red/Blue thread into the archived seasonal subforums. Fudd, can I put you in charge of creating a R/B thread in the 2010-2011 subforum tonight? Or anyone that will be online?

Thanks.

I was thinking maybe I could move this thread in there later tonight. I'm not too practiced at moving threads, but I assume that it is possible to move a thread from a forum into a subforum. Do you think that is possible?

Everyone needs to remember that tonight is just like an nfl or nba exhibition game. Don't get too excited or too depressed based on an intra-squad scrimmage

What will the match-ups be? Staten on Parker? MK vs JB?

The crowd looks sparse right now.

Post Play is a Little Suspect

Kav, Benson, and Devon are looking somewhat lost out there. I hope this gets better as the game progresses.

Watching Staten...

he has such a naturally superb handle. It really allows him to focus on open shooters. He is so, so impressive. Truly he is a prototype point guard.

Yes they did step it up after the slow start. Someone who has been curriously quiet is Paul Williams. Is he injured?

There is an unconfirmed rumor that PW was dealing with a sprained ankle and was questionable for tonight. Coaches might be limiting his minutes/activity.

Although it is early and just a scrimmage...

I think we have answered the question of the starting point guard - Staten.

Not sure why you say that. Parker looked good. Staten did always make the right pass but I would like to see him push the issue and take the ball to the basket some. I missed the first half quarter though so may have missed something.

I also came away thinking that Staten looks like our best pg. That's not a knock on Parker because Staten looks exceptional for a frosh. Staten just has an explosiveness on offense that is hard to match. He is a threat with the ball all the time. He has a stronger body than I expected. I think we want him in the game a lot.

We have a good group of forward shooters in Chris Johnson, Devin Oliver and Ralph Hill. I can actually see us spreading the floor on offense with the right guys in the game.

I was not too impressed with Searcy/Benson/Kavanaugh. None of them really took the ball to the hoop with authority. And there were a lot of defensive lapses in that group. They have work to do, IMO.

I like Dillard's raw ability as a pg. He will need a bit more discipline than he showed tonight though.

I like what I see in Spearman too. He has a lot of athleticism, and is a good penetrator.

I think we have 3 prime time players in Wright, Johnson and Staten. We have a number of good shooters we can put at shooting guard. I'm not sure what we have at center yet. It looks like center by committee right now.

He took it to the rack a couple of times and finished very well. I doubt BG wants him taking it to rack at this point as oppose to setting up others. Later in the year the story will be different as Staten and Park will be encourge to dribble drive more. As far as who starts I personally believe its Staten, but Parker will get plenty of time so it doesn’t matter. I think we all should be happy that it appears UD has two capable PG's right now just in case (knock on wood)…

Fudd-I disagree with your assessment. We saw more offensive capability out of the 5 position in this scrimmage than in the past 4 years. Searcy really showed a nice touch and kavs looks like different player. kavs had at least 3 really nice passes for easy looks and finished when he needed to. Heck, he was the leading scorer on the floor for a while. We are much better at the 5 this year on offense. Staten is a very good player. always seems under control with a nice 15' pull-up-and man is he quick. really impressed with Spearman, Hill and Oliver. They definitely held their own tonight.

Don't get me wrong, I always thought that Staten would start and still do. Just didn't think that tonight he showed much more than Parker. Of course I was watching a really bad picture and the announcer wasn't much of a help. Big men looked good too and so did Spearman.

You might be right about our bigs. I can't be sure after one scrimmage. They all had streaks of playing well. I definitely agree that our overall offense looks better. We have a lot more perimeter threats, which is going to open things up some.

I really don't have a clue on our bigs to play defense as it seemed very crowded under the basket. There was some great passing and soft touches on shots to the basket. Luke looked very good and was the only one trying to block out on rebounds. I think he has made so really good improvements on his defense although he did get called for a lot of fouls but he was guarding Chris Wright.

Wan looked really good, and has a super quick first step, great passing, and nice pull up jumper. For speed Dillard looked a little faster but his handle is not as good as Wan. Parker is really ripped and looked good against Wan but Wan has the edge.

Spearman is going to be quite the player- he has a really good handle and is able to penetrate with some great body control. Outside shot is very good and his body looks really strong. Devin Oliver also had a strong game with some good driving moves to the basket. The freshman did a good job and showed that they belong.

With that being said when they had the lineup of CW, CJ, JS, JP, and I believe DS they did not overwhelm the competition. Work to do.

Final observation is the team is more athletic than last year, really good ball handling and passing with decent defense. Would of liked to see them slow it down and see how they would operate in a half court offense.

The concern is post defense not post offense, so pointing out how good the big guys looked scoring is not comforting.

Most impressed with Spearman tonight. He is ready to play a lot of minutes. He did a real nice job of guarding the point tonight at times and didn't seem slow in doing so. He looks real solid on defense.

He has a sweet stroke and was strong taking it to the hoop. I liked all the freshman but was most suprised with BS. DO had a few real nice, solid moves and looks to want to be a beast on the boards. Once he bulks up , he could be a beast.

I was real impressed with JP too. His intensity on defense was constant and fierce.

Biggest question mark is interior defense.

Before he is done BS will be a dominating pure scorer on offense. He has all the tools
It was hard to tell about post defense. I told my son that we may miss KH on defense this year

Looks like Doug Harris agrees with the comments on this board that the Defense was not quite where it needs to be. Not surprising really considering twe lost KH, MJ and LW, each of whom was a solid defender.

High Points:

Excellent control at PG from Juwan and Josh. Both drove to the basket extremely well and was a little surprised at the defense played by these two. There was one play in particular I remember where Juwan was near the 3pt line by the bench, and just absolutely turned on the jets, blowing by 3 defenders for the easy lay-up. The crowd let out a collective gasp.

Wasn't as impressed with Dillard. I know it was his first game in front of the crowd, but he seemed slow compared to everyone else and unsure with the ball. A positive is that he didn't force some outside shots like JP. Hopefully he learns a lot in the time off that he has.

Each of the Freshman showed individual bright spots. Juwan Staten is so quick with the ball. Devin Oliver is long on Defense, and sneaky on offense (almost like a CJ or a Plummer type). I think BG finds a way to get him minutes, although I'm not sure where. Ralph knocked down 2 threes that I remember. Needs to beef up a little to be able to play inside/out. Brandon Spearman also has very nice quickness and showed great penetration to the hoop with pretty nice body control. PW needs to take lessons from BS on being aggressive.

Agree that the passing was outstanding. Saw 5+ great interior passes that we didn't see much of last year. CW, CJ, PW, and JS all had great feeds to wide open big men while driving to the hoop.

Certainly have more post offense than in the recent past. Just hope the D holds up....

So hard to tell from these intra-squad scrimmages. I never try to make too many definitives from them. To me what stood out that has carry-over is how hard the guys looked like they competed out there. The guards of Staten, Parker, and Dillard were on each other like pit bulls and trying to make life difficult.

Thought the frosh all brought something tangible and each of them hit a trey I believe. So they can all step out and hit a jumper when needed. I like that. None of them had a stroke that looked like they had never shot the ball before beyond 10 feet.

Ill go down one by one:

KAVANAUGH -- Cleaned up a few misses by others inside. Didn't really generate anything of his own offensively. Just needs some confidence more than anything else. That has to come in a real game before he trusts his skills. Probably 3rd post man behind Searcy and Benson.

BENSON -- Fairly typical Josh-esque stuff out there. Great athleticism. Just needs more PT and polish.

SEARCY -- He's our starting center bar none. Drew fouls like flies. Needs to nail those free throws. Stepped out and hit a 14 foot jumper. He's the kind of center that can outrun the opposing center for a fast break dunk. Defense will dictate how good he is as a senior. Offensively, he'll get points just on his athleticism alone. He's always had quick hands.

JOHNSON -- Who cares. CJ always brings it.

WILLIAMS -- Deferred most of the night. Some speculate a tweak to one of his wheels.

FABRIZIUS -- Didn't shoot it well, but we did throw it to him on the right post a few times. Not sure if thats a new wrinkle or not.

WRIGHT -- Who cares?

OLIVER -- I REALLY like this kid. I see the same potential in him as I saw out of CJ coming in. He's a kid that played at the highest level in HS and was the best player on the best team. He does a little of everything. Can shoot, rebound, pass, battle inside for loose balls. He's just a basketball player and makes plays.

SPEARMAN -- Physically ready. Like the others, showed he can hit the jumpshot. Carries himself defensively like Williams.

HILL -- Has some very good upside. Like Oliver, was not ranked like Spearman or Staten but makes plays. He was not in the starting 10, so perhaps that suggests there is a pecking order already?

STATEN -- Juwan aint no waterbug. He is physically ready in the upper body aint wont be pushed around. Ball handling was never in question. He will help us as we all assumed he would. Probably the most natural of our PGs.

DILLARD -- Very quick. Decent handle. Looks more like a scorer than a ball-handling guard, but can help with ball handling when we are pinched up. Reminds me of Chip Jones in the sense that he has that posture of being a guy that can score in bunches but is not really a PG by nature. Very good addition.

PARKER - See Juwan. Our two PGs this year have beef on them. Josh and Juwan were going at each other like animals.

I liked how physical our guards were. Thats a requirement in our defense because we force teams to start their offense away from the basket and we don't gamble on double teams. Denying penetration is our calling card and winning one vs. one matchups. Ask most teams last year and London's and Lowry's physical nature outside the arc was a big reason why we tough defensively. Both Parker and Staten are two guys that are going to get in peoples' grills.

The question is, whos our third ball handler? Last year it was Mickey. Not sure I have an answer. Next year the answer is clear: Dillard. This year?

We should shoot the ball better this year from the outside. Post defense will be a concern. FTs are always an issue it seems. But from what I saw, I dont think we're ever going to question how hard the 2010-11 team will play or how much importance they put on D and rebounding.

In the end, I see our calling cards unchanged and the new guys seemed to have gotten the memo on it.

At media day, BG answered that question with "Paul Williams or Devin Oliver". I guess things could be changing now that he sees guys practicing, but that is what he said last week.

Totally agree with the assessments of Spearman, Hill, Oliver, and Parker. As Sea Bass said, "the competition for minutes will be brutal". Staten certainly didn't look like a freshman. I have never seen a pg as speedy who had the control he has. So we now have a pg with LW's speed who can control the ball! I remember his Oak Hill coach saying he could get down the court with the ball on a fast break faster than any player he has coached...and he has coached some great guards who are now in the NBA (i.e. Ty Lawson).

Regarding the bigs, I thought they had some difficulty keeping up with the frantic pace of the game, but overall made good passes and scored some points. It seemed that Kav had quite a few fouls, but I don't know his total number as stats that included all 4 quarters were not shown on the scoreboard.

CW definitely looked like a leader tonight. Several times I heard him yelling one word instructions to other players. IMO, he was the best player on the floor and was 100% focused. He is on a mission.

I had to remind myself that this was 2 teams playing the same fast paced game as coached by BG. So it will be interesting to see how they play in a half court offense. I think with the pg’s and shooters we now have, the results will be much better.

I have to add that my impressions may be somewhat skewed because the fast pace of the game along with trying to identify the 4 new frosh and red card Kevin Dillard was mind boggling.

After the game, I spotted Roosevelt Chapman being interviewed on the court, so I walked over to get a closer look at him. As he was leaving, I approached him and asked for his autograph (I have never done that before, but Rosie is one of my favorite all time players and couldn't resist). He graciously agreed. We talked for a few minutes, and he said he lives in California, but Dayton and UD is his "home". Very nice guy...I think he knows how much he is loved by Dayton fans and that we will never forget him.

Paul brought the ball up the court on a couple of occasions, so that might have meant something. Then again, Logan Nourse also brought it up a couple of times.

Looks like Doug Harris agrees with the comments on this board that the Defense was not quite where it needs to be. Not surprising really considering twe lost KH, MJ and LW, each of whom was a solid defender.

This was easily my biggest concern after losing who we did last year.

It's fun to see the live bodies we have been talking about all spring. But really, there can be no concrete evaluations of players without a D-1 opponent on the other side of the ball.
Tendencies? Sure. Shooting? Maybe. (13000 screaming fans will have an effect on shooters one way or the other).

If our guy slashes to the bucket in the Red and Blue, was he that good or were we that bad on defense? Every good play you wonder was that a good play by the defense or a high school play by the offense?

Glad they played the game and we are officially launched.

Findlay might be a team that can help us see what we really have. But then again we may have to wait until Ole Miss.

Here are a few of my thoughts. I haven't read swampys yet so hopefully I am not redundant or too contradictory

Outside shooting: Haven't looked at the stats but it seems that all of the newcomers can shoot from long range.

Rebounding: More offensive rebounds than defensive LOTS of work to do here.

Chris Wright: Has improved his ball handling and body control as he hoped for. Chris took the ball to the hoop from the outside with a better handle and when he was cut off he hit someone with a nice pass. He will still get a few charges but is no longer a bull in a china shop

Chris Johnson: Still relying a lot on his outside shooting and went to the hoop once or twice. Oliver did a nice job defending him and it was hard to tell how much CJ has improved his ball handling.

Devin Searcy: Looked pretty good on offense. I don't remember him stopping anyone in the lane on defense but could have missed it. He struggled really bad with free throws, especially early.

Josh Benson: Josh looked more comfortable on offense. He faced his man up on one play and hit a 10' jumper. If he can hit that shot he becomes really tough to guard because he can go around most big guys. I didn't see him cut anyone off in the lane but he came out of nowhere to block a shot from behind.

Paul Williams: I thought Paul looked a little lighter than last year. He didn't do a lot in the game but a bad ankle would explain it.

Matt Kavanaugh: I thought that Matt looked a little lighter than last year. He was 4-4 and had good hands. I don't remember him cutting anyone off in the lane on help defense though. Work to be done there

Luke Fabrizius: A friend of my niece said "Why does everyone hate him so much" thinking that they were booing. Luke did not play well. He actually fouled out in the 2nd quarter. He had three offensive boards but only one defensive board

NEWCOMERS

This is one of the main reasons people come. You want to see how players have improved in the off season but everyone wants to see the incoming players.

Juwan Staten: I had seen Juwan play three times before this and he played just as I expected although he did have three turnovers. Juwan has great handles and great vision. He will create a lot of open jumpers for his teammates and will unselfishly get the ball to them every time. He is quick enough to really create problems against zone defenses. Toward the end Juwan was seriously gassed and took a few minutes to gather himself on the bench.

Devin Oliver: Impressed me right at the very beginning. He played good defense on CJ and showed good handles and good vision. His arms aren't quite a long as CJ but he will remind you of CJ. He will challenge shots on defense and has a great shooting motion. Another BG steal.

Brandon Spearman: He took a few minutes to get comfortable but he played as advertised. He has a very nice shot and drives to the basket under control. They had him guarding Juwan for a while. He looks to be a strong defensive player as advertised.

Josh Parker: Josh played really tough defense. He was 1-3 on three pointers and you know he can do better than that. We are very lucky to have Josh and he will make great contributions while he is here. On the downside he had one assist and five turnovers.

Ralph Hill: I thought he looked just a little tentative early but he is also a good player. He was 2-4 from three point land. His shot doesn't have a lot of arch on it but he has a great shooting motion. I didn't notice Ralph on defense but that might be a good thing

Kevin Dillard: I thought he might be pushing a little bit too much but when you are playing against staten and parker that might be normal. He is a good point/combo guard and will help this team when he gets the chance. He did have six assists with only two turnovers, a better turnover margin than the other point guards

As we were watching the volleyball match there was someone sitting a couple of rows in front of us who is probably a future player or recruit. We talked a little about the volleyball team. Seemed like a very nice guy and great fit for UD. I refrained from asking him if he was a future player and wished I had been a little more nosey later.

I was impressed with Dillard's passing. He makes nice entry passes.

I think that Chris Johnson has the most beautiful shot on the team. I noticed that some of the guys are drifting one way or another when they shoot. He is always squared to the basket, and goes straight up with his body.

From what I could see from the stream I came away very encouraged. Most notably I think that Devin Searcy is going to 'complete' the fastest Flyer team I've ever seen. I mean with DS, CW CJ, (BS,JP,DO), JS, this team is really going to get out and go.

I can't wait to see some lead-in passes and ally-oops completed, (finally) from this new crop of ball distributors. That's something thats been hampering this team's ability to really soar is its ineffective passing in the half-court offense. I do expect to see less of the weave in coming years and if last night was an indicator, it looks to be shelved...

If we get a stellar senior year from Searcy and avoid injuries I can't help but think we'll be putting a better product on the court than last year. I'm as concerned as others about post defense/depth. I'd like to see JB play some decent post defense while improving on the rest of his game. That could be key for this year.

Why is the only concern post defense? Huelsman played half of the game very well and the other half rather horribly. This year's bigs seem to be lesser defenders for sure, but have more well rounded games. So maybe they give up a few more and maybe they finish a few more themselves.

just my 2 cents...

Really enjoyed the scrimmage.
It is going to be a great year. I am really excited about this years team and potential.

Few things that stuck in my mind ...
1) Paul W - Not sure why previous posters are banging on him being injuried. Looked to me that he has been focusing on changing his game to a drive and dish. He had handful of dishes that raised my eyebrow... how'd he see that ...
But agree that it will be fun to watch whether he is agressive for his shot or agressive to move defense and drop a nice pass.

2) Devin O - Oh my. Not sure what 'it' is, but he has it. He will find some court time. Saw him switch and guard Dillard (or maybe it was Parker) out front. Nice long armed defender. Not sure if he will spend more time at 2, 3, 4 ??? I just know good things happen when he is on the floor. And nice stroke from mid to long range.

3) I am glad Dillard has a year to sit and watch. Not in a negative way, but seriously. He has great feel for where the openings are. Slightly disappointed in some of his decisions in shooting, but like agressiveness. The only slight build of the new guards.

Lastly not on the team, but I am going to stuggle to watch this progression. Thing that stuck out to me was the guard's inclination to shoot early in the clock. I realize it was a scrimmage and the fast pace play is reinforced. But saw Dillard and Parker with some early shots that also made me raise an eyebrow. If they go down consistently, .... nice shot. If not, I see problems getting back on defense and poor game management.
Don't know if it was because it was scrimmage or it is sign of more things to come.

Go Flyers. Keep getting better every day.

I watched online and only saw the first three quarters, but here are some of my early impressions:

- I was probably most curious about Kevin Dillard so I paid particular attention to him. That is not to slight our other new players, but I have seen quite a few of their high school games so I knew more or less what to expect from them (they are going to be "s" "o" "g" double "o" "d" good ).

Dillard was a wild card, though. He left SIU on bad terms (Trent Meacham :: Dayton flyer fans as Kevin Dillard :: Saluki fans) and I've read a lot about him on the Saluki message board. By most accounts, at SIU he was a VERY talented offensive player (think all-conference potential), but had a long list of negatives: bad attitude, showed up his coach, eschewed hustle plays, often played matador defense, etc. According to a few Saluki fans, Dillard even tried going back to SIU after he made the decision to transfer, but the head coach refused to take him back (although this may have been due to the coach already filling his vacated scholarship).

So, I wanted to see if Mr Dillard was buying into the Dayton program. At first glance, it looks like he is. He was hustling on defense as much as anybody. He certainly likes to have the ball in his hands (he has natural point guard tendencies, imo) but he was looking pass first. Basically, I thought he fit in fairly well and was not playing "above" the team, so to speak.

I also thought it was interesting that after a while, Josh Parker went to the bench and it was Staten and Dillard squaring off for a good while. Considering Parker can actually play this year and Dillard has to sit out, I was a little surprised that the rotations shook out that way. But maybe that is just the role the coaches have carved out for Dillard this year. His job is to make Staten a better player.

Another interesting thing that I noticed about Dillard was when Juwan and he were on the same team. Staten was playing the point, but Dillard's point guard tendencies kept taking over whenever he got the ball. He would slip into point guard mode instead of looking for his shot. I think that only lasted for a little while and either Staten started asserting his claim to the ball or they switched Dillard to the other team. I think Dillard sitting out this year is perfect for Juwan, since there won't be an immediate challenge for top dog at that spot. Parker is also talented, but I get good team-oriented vibes from him. JP will do anything to help the team, including taking a back seat to a touted frosh to help get Juwan rolling. Dillard would likely not, or at least his past history suggests he wouldn't.

- Like Seabass, I was happy to see better passing skills on display in the scrimmage. The new freshmen all seem to have natural passing skills (although I have't seen much of Ralph Hill) and they will be needed this year. Having a bunch of freshmen handle the ball and make entry passes often is a recipe for turnovers, but it is nice to see that they look for the pass and a high enough BB IQ to see the opportunities.

- Devin Oliver was impressive. He made two or three plays early in the scrimmage and just as I was thinking in my head "This guy is a player", the UD volleyball coach who was sitting in on the broadcast said the exact same thing. Coaches know players, even outside of their own sport. Devin Oliver has "it". That is not to say he is going to be a big time scorer (doubt it) or even be a high usage guy, but he is going to do a bunch of little things that will help us win. He did that for his high school team and he will do it for the Flyers. He may end up playing a "Brooks Hall" type role. Some fans may say that he doesn't shoot enough or will always want more from him, but underneath the statistics he will be making winning plays. I'm excited about him.

- I was curious about how small Juwan might look on the court but he fit in just fine. He has a nice frame to put on weight and it does look like he has bulked up a bit from what I could tell. One of the weaknesses this team will have is we will be small on defense when Parker and Staten are in the game. For that reason, I think we may see Paul Williams paired with Staten and Brandon Spearman paired with Josh Parker. Mix-and-match the size and experience.

Paris, I was thinking "Brooks Hall" watching Devin Oliver last night too. I think Brooks was a little more developed with his body as a freshman, but Devin is a little longer and has that great basketball sense and well-rounded basketball arsenal of skills. He isn't going to pop your eyes with athleticism, but I love watching a guy like that play.

Good point. I think we are 6-8 points better on offense this year-hopefully we are close to where we were last year on defense.

Finishing at the hoop!

Agree with a lot mentioned in early posts on the the team.

CW!

Love the way these guys finished at the hoop. Even DS made a few nice turnaround'ers from in close. Spearman can slash to the hole and finish in traffic! To me, he was the most impressive insofar as "I can't wait to see more of this kid".........JS too!

These guys will finish at the hoop 1000000% better this year!

CW! - He's taking this team on his back this year!

There won't be a freshman on this team by mid-Dec! These guys are ready to contribute. Not so worried about D, they'll round into shape. Still worried about D in the paint for sure.....

Wow, the frosh looked promising! We could be a very dangerous team!

My biggest concern is the defensive plays KH never had to make. By being in the right place at the right time, drivers turned around before they had to face KH. To the nake eye it might have looked like the on-ball defender caught up to turn the drive back. If Devin can execute that BG will create a scholarship in his name before the season is done.

BallgameJohnny is infamous around these parts
I liked that Hill was guarding CW and for the most part, minus one easy layup did pretty well.
