Charlotte Thread
After going down 8-2 early (only 1 other time doing that ... and we lost), and being down 6 points, only winning once, they've tied it at 17 and then again at 18. Now, pull ahead 19-18.
VCU/XU - VCU 22-21 late in first set. X had a 3 or 4 point lead middle of the set.

Assuming Dayton wins, that VCU/XU game is very critical for first round bye.

Middle of set 2, UD commanding a 13-4 lead.
For those wondering about the VCU video feed. Video is nice, commentating not so much. Rather, they are not a commentator, they are the 'Box Score Play By Play Reader'. I could be commentating that VCU match from my computer better. X up 10-7 in second set. (During a timeout, you hear the commentator, and it is just the arena announcer.)

Dayton wins set 2, 25-12.
X is beating VCU 20-14 in set 2. X places the ball very well, and makes VCU run alot. Yet, X can receive and place it well for the setter. VCU tries to come back late in the set, but falls 25-19. X has a 2-0 set lead. VCU didn't lose at all in October going 9-0. With their schedule, VCU will probably go either 2-3 or 3-3, depending on if they can win in the semi's against Dayton or Xavier. Welcome to the A10!

In set 3, it was back and forth early, until UD grabbed a 3 point lead at 10-7. They have now raised their lead to 18-10.
Meanwhile, X is beating VCU 9-5 in set 3 down in Richmond.
Sheff clearing the bench. UD up 22-13. Rachel Jones, Kaitlyn Krause, and Brigid Campbell are in.
And now, it's over. A Flyers sweep. Flyers capture set 3 25-16.
In Richmond, VCU is trying whatever they can do to keep up, but Xavier has a 19-11 lead. Looks like an X sweep of VCU.

And there it is. X wins set 3 25-16.
That has to sting VCU. They are tied for 2nd in the A10, and get swept by X 22, 19, 16. If UD can place the balls into VCU's defense as well as X did, they should be able to handle VCU easily. VCU's net defense was pretty nice, saw a few blocks going on, but it seemed like they do better when they serve, rather than receive a server.
And the rest of the A10. Duquesne sweeps Rhode Island, George Washington sweeps Fordham, and Butler sweeps La Salle. Saint Louis and Temple late in the 1st set, STL up 24-23.
UD/XU are basically going to be 1/2. 6.25% chance that X becomes 3, and VCU is 2. That requires VCU winning out, and X losing out. VCU beating Dayton? Charlotte beating X? I don't think both of those things can happen. I'll buy a lottery ticket instead...

I watched a VCU volleyball video earlier in the year and I know what you mean Figgie. There is a video, but the only audio is the from the announcer at the game who states who scored the point and who is serving. Not the best quality, but at least there is video.
I didn't get to watch any game, but I followed scores. The Xavier win at VCU was impressive in straight sets. GW got a straight set win at home against Fordham, and Duquesne DOMINATED Rhode Island. While Dayton struggled at the start, they won the 2nd convincingly and the 3rd wasn't very close either.
The real volleyball match tonight is in Saint Louis where the Billikens and Temple are in a battle. The first 2 sets were extremely close. SLU took the first 30-28 and TEM took the second 27-25. The 3rd was a clear SLU win, but they are tied 23-23 in the 4th right now.

Temple needs a win to help their chances to make the tourney, and Butler needs SLU win to help their chances. A SLU win creates an enormous match between Butler and Temple later this weekend.

Well the stats were wrong. It was not a 23-23 tie. Temple took the 4th 25-21. There will be a 5th set.

Temple wins the 5th 15-13. It will be very interesting to see how Butler fares against Temple.

I've noticed and said the same thing that Figgie has a few times. VCU clearly has a weak back row and relies on their tall front line to take some pressure off of them. Sounds like with strong play off of their own serve they are a team capable of some runs.

udisit19, it was interesting to watch. A good kill placement by Xavier just threw VCU out of rhythm. Their receive bump would not be placed well, then they would set to the 10 foot line, and hope for a good kill placement to settle themselves up. Xavier, on the other hand, would get to that well placed kill shot, bump to an appropriate spot for the setter to have a decent place to put it for a kill shot, and not just at the 10 foot line.
Looks to me that UD and X have 2 games left against each other this year, next weekend, and then in Pittsburgh on Sunday. It will be nice, though, if Saint Louis and Butler can return to winning in the A10, and we could have 4-5 good volleyball teams, and raise the level of A10 volleyball.

Yes. Dayton and Xavier look they will be meeting again.
VCU is clearly on the right track. Their commitment to volleyball can be seen within their program. They are taking the right steps to build a better team. They have good young talent that just wasn't highly recruited. Their players may be a little raw, but the block is strong. I'm impressed with what their head coach got out of this team. The win at NC State was very impressive for the Rams. VCU will be a much better program than Charlotte in the long run.
SLU should get back on track. I think they are seeing a short bump in the road due to Anne Kordes leaving. She took some recruits with her and didn't leave that program as strong as it was. They are in a great recruiting location, they should get better, but I do wonder if the Megan Boken incident will keep some recruits away from the school in the near future.
I think Butler met expectations for their first A-10 volleyball season. The Bulldogs (and Saint Louis) had a tough schedule in the A-10. They won their matches against Charlotte, La Salle, Fordham, and Rhode Island. Butler should be a program that in time becomes stronger. Just because they won the Horizon one year doesn't mean they can instantly come into the A-10 and be a program competing with Dayton and Xavier. The year they won and played in the NCAA First Round they were swept by the Flyers. The location in the midwest and the A-10 will bring recruits they couldn't get in the Horizon league. Butler will also be a much better team than Charlotte. The addition of Butler and VCU make the A-10 better than with Temple and Charlotte.
