Pepperdine Game Thread

Pepperdine beats Ohio and Illinois to start their year, and we beat Illinois, with Ohio coming up tomorrow. This could be the deciding game in the Flyer Classic.

Don't look past the Waves, ladies!

Even BIGGER match tonight. We have to stay focused and play at a high level like last night. Pepperdine is better than Illinois at this point in the season. They too sweep Illinois this morning. If the coaches voted right now, Pepperdine would be a Top 10 team.

Time to take it to another highly ranked program. As Figgie123 said, "Elite Eight or bust!" Time to play Flyer Volleyball.

NOTE: Sorry I started a Pepperdine thread too -- while Figgie started this one. I'm trying to delete it -- but if not -- just ignore it!

Also...get your butts to Frericks tonight for this match. This will be the second highest ranked team we have ever knocked off if we win tonight. The team is going to need just as much, if not more support tonight.

Hey Red Scare --- you guys have to make this happen. Get the students out in force again for this match. TEXT, TEXT, TEXT. I know it's Saturday night and after getting up after 12 noon, most of you are in "social-mode" already. But you need to do your part in what can be the biggest athletic week in UD history. Seriously... how many times can you say a UD team knocked off No 19, No 7, No 11 (TBD), AND Ohio State within 4 days????

Make it happen!!! Do your part!!!! You can be back in prime "social-mode" before 9-10 o'clock. It's only 2 hours or less. Get your butts to Frericks!!!!

We've got to get our block going. They killed us up the middle in the second set. It's tied 1-1 at the break, but we did not look good in the second set.

timing between Sam and Hammer was off in both sets -- but they seemed to get it going late in 2nd -- that has to continue. But mostly we need a block.

Amanda Cowdrey, her mom and her sister are in Dayton this weekend and at the match. Shane said it is a 6 hour drive for them. Good to see her!!!!

Actually we lost it half way through the 1st set. Pepperdine has been in control since then.

I agree. Without any net defense, Pepperdine ran their second set offense 18 inches from the net. Hard to dig when the opposing team is hammering it from point blank. Wave serve also hurt us a lot. Good first set though. We knew Pepperdine was good.

They got the early lead and held it the rest of the set. We almost made a comeback but we couldn't get it. It was like basketball trying to trade free throws for 3 pointers.

Those 3 blocks at the end of the third set totally changed this match. We had very little energy until that point. But we closed out the 3rd set and jumped on them early in the 4th. Built a 4-5 point cushion. They closed it to 2 and we turned it up again to finish it off. Team will have a lot they learned from this match.

Upset #11 Pepperdine 25 hours after knocking off #7 Illinois. Excellent job. NOW TAKE CARE OF Ohio tomorrow.

Heard attendance was 1425. It will probably be less tomorrow -- so do your part to make it more than 1000.

They out hit us.
They out blocked us.
Digs were even.
Difference in the match: SERVING. We had 10 services aces to their 3. And I'll have to look at the stat sheet, but I would guess most of their's came in the 2nd set. They also had 12 Service Errors and we had 5. Both teams knew they needed to serve tough -- we just did it better and hung in there when our passing was weak -- until we could pick it up again in the 4th. Gutsy performance when things were not going our way.

Amazing game. I was surprised that we had NO blocks in the 2nd set. Also surprised that their player with the most kills didn't start the 4th set. It took awhile until #4 came into the set.

We turned it on, and made the plays we needed, stretched our lead, and won the game.

Let's plan for Ohio tomorrow, ladies, don't look past them. Awesome job!

Pepperdine outhit us .364 to .103 in set 2 which accounts for the disparity. We gave them a lot of free balls in that set and didn't seem to get many good swings in that set.

Kelly said that serving would be important but they served the libero more than I would have expected. I have a bunch of notes from the chalk talk and probably tomorrow I will decide what can be shared before posting.

In set 3 they trailed 20-16 but had a great run

Kill by Alaina
Block by Megan and Rachel
Hitting error
Block by Megan and Rachel
Service Ace
Attack error

Their block really improved at this point Ud led 22-20 and only needed to side out for the victory in that set.

Shayne Brown, Alaina Turner and Isolde Hannan were really the key offensive players tonight. Beating a very good Pepperdine team when they held Megan Campbell to .000 and Rachel Krabacher to .073 is very impressive.

I thought that Paige played really well tonight but wow can Kraftka cover the court. And if she can get there the pass is usually right on the money. She may always be the smallest player on the court at UD but she will be a BEAST

I agree with all of this UDBrian. Because they only have the 4th set stats up (I've never seen that before???) you can see Alaina, Shayne and Z WERE the offense in that 4th set and raised their games to close it out while Pepperdine's defense was all over Kray and Hammer. And I think Sam raised her game in the 4th too -- to get the ball to the open players and with a wide variety of different tempo sets. Sam also had two big aces in the 4th.

Not anywhere near as consistantly high level of play as last night. In fact I think we all can agree EVERYONE had their ugly moments. But we just beat the #11 ranked team in the country -- with some ugly, sloppy and no energy on a whole lot of plays -- and that actually says a lot about this team. Hung in there when things were not going well and found a way to raise their game and get the win.

Obviously, Pepperdine - at this point in the season - is much better than Illinois. Illinois is nowhere near #7, but Pepperdine is certainly top 25 and maybe really is #11. I know we got contributions from a lot of folks. However, after the first two matches, the biggest surprise to me is the play of Turner. She has far exceeded anything I heard predicted for her. Serving - when we made that run at the end of the third set. Hitting out of the back. Killing off the front. So much dynamite from such a slender body. Wait till she gets some meat on them bones. We knew for the most part what was coming back. What we didn't know was the impact that both Turner and Krafka would make.

By the way, the normally reserved Sheff was getting quite animated - at least for him - as we made that run in the third set.

No looking past the Bobcats. We worked so hard to build this success. Don't negate it with a stinker tomorrow.

Precisely my thought watching streaming. Blocking game was way off from the end of the first set until well into the third. Every time UD blocked, it fell on their side of the net. Every time Pepperdine blocked, it went over.

Turned out ok though!!!

From the last 5-10 points of the first set to the tail end of the third set before we rallied, I couldnt recall a single block. Our net defense was completely out to lunch. And it wasnt for a lack of sending players to the net with hands high. Pepperdine was just abusing our blocking by hitting balls off our hands, through our hands, around our hands, etc. There were even 3-4 completely clean Pepperdine kills where they simply went down the line on the kill when there should have been nothing but hands. So we couldnt even get our hands on balls hit straight into the block. And all the blocks with touches were either landing on our side of the court or out of bounds.

Pepperdine started running their offense closer and closer to the net because there was no net D. That made it like shooting fish in a barrel. Hard to dig balls when they are being killed 2 feet in front of you.

The tail end of the third set, we finally got a block. It was like the balloon finally popped and we said to ourselves "OK we can regroup and figure this out." Then we got another huge block to help us tie up the third set. Without us stepping it up defensively at the net, we lose game three and perhaps the momentum and entire match. Every point is a two-point swing so when you muff a block, thats the difference between 18-21 and 19-20. That's huge when you are trying to close the margin. A couple of those points and you are back in it. A couple muffs and its 18-23 and the set is just about decided.

Got a couple more big blocks in set four including the Kobe Bryant solo stuff by Campbell right down Broadway. The improved net D pushed Pepperdine's offense back another 18-24 inches from the net and that totally changes the angles on the court for the spiker. Nevermind you get another tenth or two in reaction time to come up with a dig. So the net defense was on its way to losing the match, and ended up winning it.

As Becky said, our serving was great all match. I said the same thing to the person next to me that we went about 2 full sets without a serving error. We were keeping everything in the park and putting the ball where we wanted. Pepperdine floated a couple over the end line when we needed a couple freebies. Until the last point or two of the match when we airmailed a serve out of bounds, the serve was rock solid. I thought Campbell and Turner were our most effective servers all night.

Turner is going to leave this program better than she found it when its all said and done. She has all the tools. She's a glorified HS graduate out there banging balls point for point with a #11 ranked team with players 3-4 years her senior. About the only thing she lacks is 2-3 more inches in height, but she elevates well and looks comfortable hitting both in front and behind the line. Her serving is very very solid too. She could very well win the A10 Rookie of the Year.

Krafka has a lot of potential. Her defense is pretty ripe. Z didnt get set much. But she bailed us out on a couple points on just tipping garbage over from bad sets.

We beat a heck of a team despite not playing our best and Kray having a tough go of things after the first 20 points of the match when she was on fire. Other players filled in and covered. I think that's a good sign moving forward. When you play good teams, they are gonna take some of your studs out of the game. But who else can you point to?

Tonight was a team win. Probably didnt deserve that third set given the way we played for about 80% of it. But we somehow grinded it out. To me that was the difference in the whole match. Those 2-3 blocks to get us back even late in the third. We dont do that, Pepperdine might finish us off in four. We pulled that one out of our butts however and basically controlled set four from start to finish.

By the time we got to 21-22 points in the fourth, Pepperdine looked like they knew they were finished. We were putting away most chances on the first try.

Great Flyer weekend in athletics thus far. Ohio State, #19 Boston U, #7 Illinois, and #11 Pepperdine all succumbing to UD.

Ohio U, Northwestern, and Kentucky finish off the weekend tomorrow. We are 4-0. Could we sweep the toughest weekend of Olympics sports in school history?

Great win!!!

A complete box score can be found at the Pepperdine site.

One must remember that when two great teams come to play against one another, it often comes off more like a war than a neat, orderly and statistically clear match-up. Wars are often messy. Little battles are won and little battles are lost, but the victory comes from winning more of the little battles than the opponent and/or winning those little battles at crucial moments.

When a team has key players--returning All-Americans or other notable players--the opponent will try to neutralize them--just as you try to neutralize their key players. Sometimes you succeed in taking these players out of their game. Sometimes you fail at taking them out of their game and sometimes you simply have a stalemate. Volleyball is a game of organized chaos. Statistically, it is not always pretty. But, nevertheless, victory is sweet!

Something to ponder: Is Janna Krafka going to become Flyer volleyball's first Olympian? I believe she could become that good!

This is something I noticed too. I'm not sure why she isn't getting set as much. It looks like the sets are able to be put anywhere, so I'm not sure what the decision maker is as to who gets the kill attempt. Megan and Shayne are doing pretty good at the right-slide spike, but Z is constantly going up, and almost never getting the ball.

I really wish there was a fuller play-by-play than just what wins the point, because I'd love to do some deterministic analysis to know that when player A assists the ball, what percentage of time do they assist it to Player B. It has to be in there somewhere, I'd think, since that is the attempts in the box score, though assists and digs are probably only assigned when a kill is scored, so I don't know. It'd still be interesting.

Great post and several of those battles during the war were won because of some great ups by Janna. And she is always smiling and positive to her teammates. It is possible that Janna could become that good. I told her in the autograph line that I enjoyed watching great back row players and she was really good.

It's good to have another active board member!

After a good question from a volleyball player at the chalk talk Kelly said that they were going to set the middles in more positions than in previous years. He said that against illinois last year Illinois adjusted because of the large number of slides we were setting. So you can expect more quick sets to Isolde and megan but they might be a little off the side rather than in the middle. This keeps the opposing middle blocker more honest

The pass needs to be really good in order to quick set a middle hitter. It is also possible that they were using Isolde as a decoy early in the match until Pepperdine stopped covering her as closely.

Okay, it's time to come clean. This is only my 3rd season of being a Flyers volleyball fan. I started following UD Flyers volleyball when Jessica Yanz became the setter. She was a setter on the Nebraska team. I've been a Nebraska Huskers fan since 1977. So, I am BOTH a Flyers and a Huskers volleyball fan. I look at it like having a favorite American League team and a favorite National League team. Both can be favorites!

I found the Flyers to have wonderful players--great students with great talent and abilities! And, I would rate the Flyers volleyball coaches and staff up there with the best in the country. (I watch A LOT of volleyball.)

I watched the Huskers ascend to become one of the elite teams in the country and I believe the Flyers are moving quickly in that direction too.

I can hardly wait for the Flyers and the Huskers to meet next year and the year after--or, maybe in the NCAA tournament this year! When they meet, I hope that each team plays to the best of their abilities and, then, let the chips fall where they may.

I was watching BOTH the Nebraska vs UCLA match and the Flyers vs Pepperdine match simultaneously last night--two exciting matches!

The flyers will be among the first to play the Huskers in the Huskers' new facility next year. See the renderings here.

We hope to be at that Huskers/Flyers match next year. Also, we have scheduled a road trip this fall. We will watch the Huskers play at Purdue (10/5) and at Indiana (10-6) and watch the Flyers play Xavier (10-8). That will be our first visit to Frericks.

Please excuse any faux pas I may make as I get up to speed on this first-rate forum.

Go Flyers!

Z -- here are a couple things you can look for and you might find some answers:

1. Z plays MB2. Megan plays MB1. The difference is that on 2 rotations Megan and one OH are the only hitters in the front row. Sam is the 3rd front row person. (Kray is the OH1) Less hitters in the front row get more swings in general. So normally the MB2 has less swings than the MB1 and the OH1 has more swings than the OH2.

2. Look who is in the backrow during Z's 3 rotations. For 1/2 a rotation we have Megan serving in the back row. (No offense Megan,) but she isn't our best passer -- and you have to have a really good pass to set the MB. That also means Krafta is on the sideline during that 1/2 rotation -- our best passer.

3. Sideouts -- both who we have serving and who the opponent has serving -- which leads to who they have in their backrow, etc. There will be rotations in every match that side out quickly and we get no point runs so the players move through their rotations quicker with LESS POINTS SCORED while they are on the floor. You look at the box score and see Z took 7 swings and Megan took 16 swings and you think "we need to set Z more." It could be Megan was on the floor for twice as many points as Z because of quick sideouts.

4. The tandem attacks -- this is new this year. Haven't seen a Dayton squad run these much if at all in past years. (To be honest I thought we should have run tandem attacks in front of the setter when Jess and Amanda were playing. With our MBs as the front hitter and Amanda coming in behind them, she would have been killer.)

Anyway...when you have two hitter approaching the net to attack, one right behind the other, the setter has to READ the blockers and if they jump when the first attacker jumps -- she sets the second attacker. If they freeze because they don't know when to jump -- you set the first attacker. On most tandum attacks, the MB is the front attacker and it's the block that dictates who gets the set. So even if Z doesn't get the set -- she has done her job if she gets the blockers to jump and defend her, leaving an open net for the hitter coming behind her. And Sam too has done her job of reading the blockers and setting the open hitter.

Finally, I think we have set Z more these first two matches than we did last year. I can tell she is a bigger part of the offensive options. She has had a whole off-season to work with Sam and she has gotten better. The slide takes the most time for a setter and hitter to perfect and get the placement and timing down. It's usually the hardest set. Back sets in general take way more time to perfect. The easiest set is the high ball to the left side. And the 1-ball (this is low to the net and all about a fast attack-getting up before the block to beat it) takes timing between the setter and the MB -- because the MB jumps BEFORE the setter touches the ball. Z runs this play a lot which in addition to the tandum attack plays, might look like she is a decoy. But because she has to jump before the setter touches the ball, a couple things can happen that make it impossible for the set to go to Z. First, the ball may come slow to Sam and Z is on her way down. We saw Sam set Z late and that either results in bad timing and Z's only option is to tip the ball versus hit it -- or sometime it's so late the hitter has no prayer because the block is waiting. It's not just Sam and Z. We saw this A LOT the first two weekends Lindsay and Jess played together. Lindsay just got stuffed. She had no prayer by the time she got the ball. It just took some time for Jess and Linds to get the timing down for this quick set and then they scored most of the time. The second thing that can cause the setter to not deliver the ball to an MB who is running a quick set is by the time the setter moves to take the pass, she might now be out of position to set the MB. Becasue the MB jumps before the setter has the ball on this play, it only works if the setter gets a decent pass and has the angle to quick set Z.

Some of this may apply and some of it may not -- but it's several things you can start to look for when Z is in the front row. You look at the box score and think "we need to set Z more" when in fact it might be we set her every time we had the opportunity.

Hope this helps.

Go Flyers!
The match against xavier is always good with a good crowd. They run a REALLY fast offense when they are passing the ball well. One thing that generally happens in that match is that our blocking improves a lot from set number 1 to set number 4/5 as the team picks up the rhythm of the xavier offense.

So, basically, Z is the Kurt Huelsman of the volleyball court. Not much in the stat department (though she is leading in block assists), but makes everyone else look better by drawing the defense.

Z's going to have some big matches and win some matches for us this year. IMO I'd say last year the setter was looking to distribute the ball as follows:

Kray
Campbell
Von
Shayne
Z (she was an inexperienced freshman after all)

Before this weekend I'd say this year would have looked like this

Kray
Campbell
Z - Alaina - Shayne

Alaina's going to get more swings because she plays OH2 -- but I think everyone has raised their games so that Sam is confident to set any of them at any time -- and especially in critical point times. I think she has confidence in ALL of them.
