This was an impressive display by UD. They were down 15-20. Matt called TO. Then UD had one of it's most impressive offensive outputs of the season. They won the set 28-26, scoring 13 points as follows:

3 blocks -- and we needed them all. (We had a truck load in set 1. Our block is back big time.)
10 kills -- we terminated at a very high rate during this run, something we have been having problems with all season.
1 Error -- Angle's "nobody every calls this" 9 sec Service Error.

Other than the 3 blocks, which technically are Fordham hitting errors, but I'd say we forced those errors, Fordham gave us ZERO POINTS.

That's what is so impressive -- WE TERMINATED BALLS at a VERY HIGH percentage during this run while making ZERO hitting errors. We haven't done that very well this year.

Backs against the wall, down 15-20 and we raised our level of play and committed ZERO hitting errors. VERY IMPRESSIVE. Now build from it and come out of intermission and put this team away for a sweep. Go Flyers!

We just put up 4 straight blocks to take the lead 14-11 in set 3. Fordham called TO -- can't blame them.

UD take Set 3 25-19 for the sweep. Nice to see us close it out. Finish wasn't as strong as in set 2, but the team played very well. Here are some highlights:

Our leftside OHs of Brown and Loiars combined to hit .225. We haven't seen that high of a hitting percentage from the left all year. More importantly they had an error % of 11.3% (very good) and terminated at a 33.8% rate (also very good).

As a team we hit .233. Again, that might be a season high. Our middles (Z and Angel) didn't hit all that great, but they both had huge blocking nights, 9 and 8 blocks respectively.

And in her 2nd match on the rightside OH, Megan Campbell was big. She had ZERO hitting errors and hit .429 (off the charts good) and came up with 5 big blocks -- also huge for an OH. The team had 17 blocks in 3 sets for a 5.67/set average. (point of reference is 3.0/set leads the country.) Strong blocking night tomorrow and we are back in the Top 3-4 in the country for blocks.

Want to give a big shout out to seniors Megan Campbell and Shayne Brown. They are only 2-3 matches into a new position and both are really stepping up and doing whatever they can to help this team get on track in it's drive to be the best it can be come A-10 tourney time. It's tough to take on a new position, and being asked to do it your senior year is kind of crappy, but both these young ladies have clearly embraced the challenge and are just flat out putting up big-time numbers. Their efforts are so "Flyer Volleyball". Way to step up and LEAD!

I disagree with this totally. Matt is his own man and he is managing this team as well as anyone can expect under some bad circumstances, some of which were due to the fact Sheff left UD in worse condition than what he inherited. Additionally, Matt has done an excellent job of calling time outs this year and managing from the sideline.

Matt is much more calm on the sideline, more like Sheff; letting the girls play and only calling timeouts when necessary.

And this is on the road after midterm exams, when UD often times lays an egg.

Hannan had 9 blocks and 7 kills; Brown had 13 kills and 3 blocks
Nice to hear Matt is calmer!!!!

I disagreed with your remarks about Matt last week and still do this week. "Only calling timeouts when it's necessary..." Are you kidding me? I've never seen Matt call a bad time out. They have ALL been necessary. You made three points in your comment and I disagreed with everyone of them.

And for the record, Tandem's comment was about Matt's interaction with the refs, not the team.

Congradulations to Dayton on the win, to Matt for making the changes, to Megan and Shayne for buying into the changes and to BeckysTXA on recognizing these events. While it was good to see left OH production, I hope Alaina, who often had to play left OH against much stronger teams than Fordham, recovers soon. I still believe she may be the best player on next years team.

As a graduate, I can not resist mentioning UC Santa Barbara's upset win over 5th ranked Hawaii, AT THEIR gym, before 7,000 + fans, in 5 sets last night. UCSB, like Dayton, recently made a key position change. Leah Scully, formerly an OH, is now Libero and had 22 digs. Hawaii had 41 consecutive wins in conference, last losing, in conference, in 2008.

I hate to be a pessimist but shoulder issues don't heal quickly and volleyball puts a lot of strain on a shoulder. I will be very happy and surprised if Alaina plays again this year. But, I do know that the new sports tapes are worn by a lot of pros to take the strain off shoulders.

I hope UD's position changes result in similar results! There is no question that we should be a better blocking team with the changes.

I agree Alaina can help this team, this year, if she can get healthy. As we have discussed before, she was our second best digger after our Libero Krafka. Even if she could get healthy enough to play back row as a DS, and not take the heavy load of swinging 30+ times a match, her passing out of the backrow would help this year's team. And you are correct, Alaina's stats this season are against some big time programs.

We all wish her a speedy recovery and hope it's a strain and not an injury that will keep her down long-term.

I liked Shayne's interview after the Fordham match (out on daytonflyers.com). She just finished her 3rd match on the left and Megan her 2nd match on the right. Shayne said both are still learning the positions and expects to get even better. That's what this team needs -- players stepping up and raising their level of play.

Also, congrats to your team UCSB. Great upset of Hawaii and it's always special when those kind of win can happen at home before your loyal fans. Really exciting for UCSB.
