Angle playing right side OH and Megan back in the middle. I like this line up. I missed Megan's slide out of the middle.
We have to play better than the first set, and soon.

The first set was ugly, but the 2nd was nice. I really like the decisions Shayne Brown is making in the air before her swing.
Now we need to come out of the locker room with focus and a purpose and play Flyer Volleyball.

That first set was more than ugly. Second set righted the ship. Let's see how they come out of the locker room.

I agree on the lineup with Megan in the middle, too good of a hitter to just play right side. I'm sure all the coaches had trouble keeping calm in the first set. Those are the times when you are glad not to be a coach, LOL

Got the block going in the third set - and the intimidation was obvious.

Once they woke up they dominated as you would expect. Megan had a beast of a game 12 kills, 9 blocks but the stats make me think that everyone played well.
I plan on grading the passing tomorrow if I can stand doing that instead of just watching the match. Don't know yet whether I will share the numbers. I might simply grade the team instead of individual players, much easier to keep track of

We looked good the last 3 sets winning 15-15-9. Have no idea what was going on in the first set, unless Fordham was just playing out their you know what. They had a player (Atwood) who went on 2 long serving runs - like 7 and 8 points each. I don't think our passing was THAT bad during those runs, but we could just not terminate for some reason. Whatever it was, we corrected it becasue I only remember a 2 serve run after that by Atwood. For the most part we got her off the end line quickly.
And of course our block in the 3rd set made a huge difference. And in the 4th you could see their hitters were done. The fear of the block caused all kinds of hitting errors in the 4th set -- both into the net and out of bounds. From our side of the net it was a thing of beauty.

Interesting match. First set not so great, last 3 pretty good. I don't remember what it was in the first set, but I think we got behind, and again, we have a hard time recovering from a deficit.
I hadn't watched the road matches, so I wasn't sure who was right side, and was going to mention Angel was there today, so at least I'm not crazy to think it was different. Shayne and Jill were doing a great job on the left-side.
Freshman Beach had a boot on one of her feet and was in crutches. Alaina Turner was dressed, but didn't do any pre-game routines, as you would expect.
Applegate had a few miscues receiving in the first set, and coach put Shayne back in, and from that point on, Shayne played 6 rotations. (Applegate is shown with 2 sets played, though...) Thankfully, I only remember one service error for Jendryk. I wasn't cursing her tonight. (She actually had 3 according to the box score...)
Gotta keep winning. Only the top 6 teams get to the A10 Tournament. Granted, our schedule was front-loaded, but we lost to RI last weekend.

I agree with the "gotta keep winning" and the A-10 Tourney seeding. I thought we would go "500 for the year" last weekend. I think it's paramount we beat Rhode Island on Sunday and go "500 for the year" this weekend. We need it for the A-10 standings. We need to correct the loss last weekend at RI. And we need it big time for the CONFIDENCE we will need going into Pittsburgh next weekend against Duquesne.
a.k.a. Sunday's match against Rhode Island is a HUGE match for this team.
I will look forward to seeing what UDBrian has for passing stats on Sunday. It's hard to keep individual stats if you want to enjoy the match as a fan, so just keeping the team's will be great. Thanks for doing it!!!
Against Fordham we set Megan in the middle 22 times and Z 12 times. Our passing had to be good on Megan's rotations to be able to do that and pretty good on Z's. I did notice Z still needs to work on getting her shoulders more square with the net when she swings. She is great when she does that. When she is swinging across her body she loses some speed on the ball and is more likely to hit out. Loved seeing Megan's slide again out of the middle. We need that in our offensive mix. Glad to see her back at MB.
Angel played right side for the first time. Put up 5 BIG blocks. Didn't get a lot of swings (6), but she can be GREAT on the right for us the rest of the way this year. It's not as fun to play the right side as the middle, but this team needs that from Angel at this point and we as fans need to make sure we tell her that and support her and let her know we appreciate all her extra work and putting the team first in this move. GO ANGEL!!!!! Get after it and good things will come!!!!! For example, Megan and Becky Novacek played rightside their first year starting and then moved back to their preferred position in the middle and had great careers. SLU's Sammie McCloud was A-10 POY from the right and Nebraska's Sarah Paven was National POY from the right side. Own it and keep working hard because you can be great on the right side and this team needs that.
I liked our production off the left side OH again. Shayne and Jill averaged out .218 Hitting %. If we can get a combined production of .220-.230 from our left OHs -- it will be a big step forward come tournament time. Brown was flat out impressive in her "in-air" decisions. I love it when she gets one-on-one blocking or a hole in the block and just crushes it. but what is even more impressive is her ability to score with roll shots over the block and her decisions with her swing when we are out-of-system. Can't remember if I saw Shayne go down the line or not. That might be a shot she can add. And we saw her play all 6 rotations this week. For the first time out, she was pretty good. More time there in practice and I'm sure Matt will add some swings by her out of the backrow, which we need in our offensive mix. I'd would bet we see some of that in the next week. What Shayne has done since she has moved to the left is nothing short of WOW! She is hitting awesome from the left. This week she has added some backrow defense and serve receive. In the next week or two if she can add some backrow swings she will have become a complete 6 rotation left OH. It's the hardest position to play because you have to do EVERYTHING WELL. It's the position USA Volleyball has so much problem filling because you have to take so many swings and execute so many different types of shots and block and serve and serve receive and dig and pass nails. And so far Shayne is eating it all up and working her butt off to get there as fast as she can. Very impressive. She is a candidate for A-10 POY -- don't think the other coaches in the conference don't know how hard it is to do all this and do it well.
Jill is getting better too. She isn't as far along as Shayne in her decisions in the air, but she has improved so much this year and her best is yet to come.
One task at hand - beat Rhode Island. Get in and out of the gym fast and get after it again this week in practice.

Coach talked to Z one time when she came out for her back row out-rotation, and I could read his lips telling her to hit down, and not straight. It's like Z is aiming more for back corner, or back row, and coach wants her to hit more straight down in between front and back rows, which Megan seemed to do well last night.

With Angel on the right, and Z in the middle, it was cool to see them slide to that side for the block. Our two highest jumpers, with the highest reach on the team, getting to that side is nice to see.

Shayne actually did a good job on receiving, with a pretty decent set placement. She had a few go wacky, but Jenna didn't move that much for most of Shayne's passes. It was impressive to see. I think it was Shayne as well who had a complete UD out-of-system point after a "fist-over" caught the back row center on Fordham's team out of whack or something. It was cool. Fordham should have been able to get an in-system attack, and they blew the receive. I also didn't notice many, if any, back row attacks during the match. Even when Jenna ran to the back row to set, she set it over to the front row left side hitter.

Jill has definately impressed me when I've watched her. She has a nice strong arm, and puts some nice shots down. I agree that her decisions need a bit of improvement, as well as some of her dump shots after an out-of-system.

I haven't "seen" any back row attack since Turner and this is the first match we've played a hitter in the back row, except the 1/2 rotations when a hitter serves. Then they come out and are replaced by a defensive specialist.
So it looks like they "added" back row defense for Shayne this week. May have only worked on her digging, passing and serve receive skills in practice. That's a lot to take on in a week when you haven't played back there for four and a half years, and that was in high school. Not anywhere near the DI level.
I'm guessing, if she passed the back row defensive test this weekend, they will continue to work on that but add some practice time with the back row attack in the next week or two. We need this offensive option. What we miss most about Turner not being available is what she brought to our back row both offensively and defensively. From what I've seen, Shayne can get there and be great. It's just going to take time to add all the pieces to her game. So far she seems to be passing every test.
