Florida volleyball

Had the pleasure of watching the 3rd (?) ranked Gator volleyball team whip up on some bottom feeders this weekend in Gainesville. Other than overall talent mismatches, there were some noteworthy players. 6'8" Sophomore MB Rachael Kramer is approaching beast-mode status. Another standout was OH Carli Snyder, who has been singled out by many coaches, including Texas and Nebraska, as having the hardest serve in the land. In one funny episode her serve knocked two defenders to the floor when it hit one in the forehead and the second player on the bounce. The entire arena was in stitches and Lipscomb had to call time out because their team could not stop laughing, including their coach and both players.

Of note also was a Lipscomb OH named Carlyie Nusbaum who, at 5'10" probably had a 35" vertical and could play for any top team in the country. She raised the level of play on Lipscomb by her presence. Was personally responsible for taking a set off of Florida, and put on a show the whole match.

I could only dream of having our Flyers in that mix. Would have opened some eyes in Gainesville.

Oh, as an aside, witnessed a pretty good football game ending to the Gator/Tennessee matchup.

You saw one of the three 6'8" players on rosters this year. It's the future and I believe the FL player is the oldest, the other two are freshmen. And if I was a coach, I'd get film of the server, break it down and try to teach what she is doing.

I would take a wild guess that her serve is in the 80's. But what makes her so effective is also her elevation off the jump at 6'1" and the heavy topspin that she imparts.

I remember Bridget Fouke - she played OH for SLU approx 2007-2010. Back when SLU and UD battled for conference championships and both made the NCAAs. After graduating she played pro overseas. I saw one and f her pro matches and I was floored at her serve. It was a weapon in the pros. I don't know who got ahold of her after college, but they knew what they were doing.

Every coach has the areas they are good at teaching. Sheffield was a great blocking coach. He believed in swing blocking - which can take 1-2 years to perfect. He brought in Carrie DeMange as a grad/volunteer coach to help teach it. (She was a local prep player that went to Duke and was an AA along with Ali Hausfeld.) And we became a great blocking team.

The former Illinois and now Stanford coach Kevin Hambly is a great blocking coach. Other coaches are great at other things. But I don't know of any coach that is a great serving coach. They have to be out there. I'm not sure enough coaching is going into serving. I think it's an area that has a huge upside if a program does the ground work and commits to finding people that can coach serving and bring them in even if it's for a week during the spring to work with the players.
