POY + other A10 awards

I thought I'd give this its own thread.

I think POY is between Amber and Fairchild from Fordham. The top two teams (UD and VCU) have spread a lot of the stats among a lot of their players, so it's hard to pick out a POY.

There is not a clear cut choice this year. Usually there is. It will be interesting.

George Washington, #6 seed in the tournament gets no recognition for any player.

Olivia Fairchild from Fordham is on 2nd team.

In general the awards seem to be pretty accurate to me.

I thought Amber deserved player of the year. Amber's hitting % (0.458) is way above other similar players like Kendyll Brown (0.387), Tori Baldwin (0.353), Ellie Crosley (0.345), or Lauren Leverenz (0.343). Amber also plays a very well rounded game for a middle. Her blocks per set of 1.18 are 4th best in the conference, her service aces per set are 16th (K. Brown, Tori Baldwin, and Ellie Crosley don't serve), and she is in a 3 way tie for most digs per set among the top 10 middle blockers (Amber, L. Leverenz, and Abbie Trzeciak all have 0.70 digs per set). I'm sure anyone watching a match in person also felt Amber played like the POY. The range of court she can hit from a good set is probably 80% of the court. I was amazed at her ability to hit the ball to some of the areas close to the net like the spots more than a few feet from the sidelines. She is VERY difficult to defend.

If there were any snubs, I think Jasmin Sneed can make a case with her 2nd best blocks per set and her eighth best hitting percentage. I think she's a big reason why VCU was able to beat Dayton and be in first place.

Jessica Sloan also could argue that she should have made the 2nd team. Jess Sloan compares favorably to Sien Gallop in a couple of categories since they are both listed as OH. Jess has a much higher hitting percentage (0.187 to 0.135) and has a much higher blocking rate (0.48 to 0.26). Sien Gallop has better digging stats (2.35 to 2.06) and better serving stats (0.69 sa/s to 0.42 sa/s). It's almost as if Sien earned her 1st team spot on mainly on serving, but Jess is no slouch at 4th best serve in the conference. Jess's good all around stats seem deserving to me, especially when attacking and blocking are very important aspects of the outside hitter position.

Maya Taylor seems like a good choice for Rookie of the Year, but Ellie Crosley put up very good hitting and blocking numbers and seemed very deserving as well. There were a lot of good Rookie candidates. The future looks bright. I was surprised La Salle's Samantha Graver didn't make the Rookie Team. Graver is tied with Molly Davet for most digs/s by a non-libero at 2.99 d/s. Molly Davet was the best OH back row defender last year, so she is in very good company for this category. Graver's h% of 0.181 is great for a freshman OH, and her sa/s of 0.33 are good as well.

Figgie, GW does seem like they should have some recognition. Kelsey Clark is a good all around player and an exceptional on court leader. She is one of those players whose contributions don't always find their way to the stat sheet. GW just must be loaded with a lot of decent players but no true stars.

Fairchild is great player and she still has two more years of scholarship. But her 0.48 blk/s are low for a player in the Right Side position who sees more attempts from the opposing teams OH. Other than that Olivia Fairchild has great numbers in H%, sa/s, and d/s. She will continue to be a player that should be considered for POY until she graduates.

I agree with Fairchild being a sophomore and good catch on her blocking. As a Rightside you expect something .70 balks/set or better.

I hope the team tears it up this weekend and punches their ticket to the dance.

I'm partial to the player who wears #4, so bring it Jess...and will this team to a championship.

Go Flyers.

Agreed, Becky. Congrats to all of our girls and their awards. So happy for Lauren, and Amber was an easy choice. Jane swept all 4 years - amazing. And Margo Polo - you are OUR LOY. . Kendyll repeats (awesome!) and we had only 1 freshman but Bridget made it count.

Ok ladies, regular season is interesting but it’s this weekend that counts! Go take home your 4th straight title! Go Flyers!!!
