2018 A-10 Week 1

It is the first day of the 2018 NCAA Volleyball Season.

The first A-10 match is already underway. No stats, but Fordham is posting updates about their match against Eastern Michigan on Twitter. (Fordham just lost set 1 21-25) I think Rhode Island vs. Loyola Marymount @Temple has started too, but the stats are having technical difficulties. Typical. Also, before prime-time La Salle faces Morgan State at 3:00 PM in Delaware. I'm hoping Fordham can beat E. Michigan, but if not La Salle might get the A-10's first win.

Later today both St. Louis vs. Miami (OH) and Dayton vs. Marshall are on ESPN+. SLU vs. Miami(OH) is at 6:00 PM and Dayton vs. Marshall is obviously at 7:00 PM. Marshall does not return a lot of players from last year. Dayton should be a big favorite at home. The Saturday matches in Frericks should be more entertaining.

Most exciting match today might be VCU at NC State. Really great opportunity for the VCU rams. That match is also at 7:00 PM. Duquesne vs. Lehigh (at 7:00 PM) looks like it has two evenly matched teams from Pennsylvania. I'm interested to see how that turns out.

Stats are finally working for the Rhode Island vs. Loyola Marymount match. Looks pretty clear RI will lose, they are down 23-16 in the 3rd. RI lost the 1st 18-25 and lost the 2nd 10-25. Tough first match. Bright spot is Natale Zanellato, Sophmore transfer from Memphis. Currently 22 attempts and she is hitting 0.273 from an outside position. (update: R rams lose 3-0 19-25 in the last set. Not bad in the 1st and 3rd but got crushed in the 2nd)

Fordham dropped their 2nd set 25-19. F rams are down 2-0 to Eastern Michigan. (update: Fordham loses set 3 25-17. No blowouts but they could never put true pressure on the midwest team. Fordham now plays two east coast teams - St. Johns and Cent. Conn St. on Saturday)

La Salle does in fact get the first A10 win this year beating Morgan St in 3. They almost gave away the 3rd set. Up 22-15 they go down 23-24. Called timeout and came out of it by scoring 3 straight points to win the third 26-23. Nice to see them turn it back up on a dime when they needed to.

La Salle just got a win. They beat Morgan State 3-0 (25-23 25-19 26-24) I wouldn't say it was convincing since all of the sets were close, but a win is a win. And this was a neutral court, so they got a win without home court advantage. That's something.

La Salle has won 4 straight against the MEAC. They are now 4-4 against the MEAC on a neutral court since 2006.

I’m watching SLU-Miami for an hour before UD. There is no other way to say this...but right now SLU is awful. Their setter Rivera is out still, so I thought, “They need to get their starting setter back ASAP.” But I watched 5-10 minutes more and realized they have problems everywhere.

Their serve receive is bad. Their passing is bad. The short sophomore setter is running all over the court and Miami’s block is waiting for SLUs good OH Maya and she is getting stuffed. SLUs block is bad. Their backrow is SLOW. Andtheir serving I didn’t watch close enough to comment. It the first match of the season and the first set, but it was bad. Kent Miller is in his 8th year. He’s brought in good recruits. They should be farther along than this.

On the flip side, Miami is also on our schedule and they look pretty good for the first set/match. Cincy is also there and the beat UC Santa Barbara earlier. Miami vs Cincy will be a good match to watch.

They also can’t serve. No one has anything that will scare our backrow plus they already have 6 service errors - all long serves.

We are in a Challenge right now - So Miami has a System now. I wonder if UD put one in yet? Well know soon enough.

SLU won the challenge to retain serve at 13-19 and Miami fell apart making 4 errors in 4 points. SLU in it now 17-19.

UD and LaSalle might be the only two to win today. DUQ was behind Lehigh when stats froze up. VCU took NC State to 5 but couldn’t finish it off.

SLU and DUQ are going to have to get better fast or this is another two horse race between VCU and UD and VCU is ahead of the Flyers right now because we have so many young players.

UCSB - SLU game

My old school, U C Santa Barbara really took it to St. Louis. Won in three straight sets and closest score was 25-20. I believe UCSB held SLU to .010 hitting for the match.

UCSB did lose to Cincinnati 3 sets to two with the final set being 15-13 Cincy.

For the weekend Lindsey Ruddins, MVP of the tournament, had 60 kills and 169attempts. UCSB is playing a true freshman setter who had 123 for the tournament.

I watched the first SLU match this year and I hated to see it but they were just awful in all aspects of the game. We need SLU to push for at large consideration and they will struggle this year unless they get better really quick.

The weekend kind of continues for VCU today. They host Wichita State for a Monday night match. A very nice home match for the VCU Rams. And if you really stretch it, Davidson hosts Charlotte on Tuesday night.

Dayton was the only team to win all 3 matches. Davidson went 2-1 with wins over Marist and William & Mary. These were the only teams playing at home and truly in control of their schedule, so it makes sense that they had the most success. Dayton didn't make it super easy for themselves. They schedule the toughest two matches with a relatively short break in between. Dayton let Univ. of South Alabama play Marshall early and take a long break before the night match, but the Flyers still earned the victory. I didn't see any of the Davidson matches, but they did sweep Marist and W&M. I thought Davidson v. Marist would be a little more competitive and go beyond 3 sets. Impressed with the Wildcats ability to close some close sets (25-23 25-19 25-23). Marist was 3rd place in a bad MAAC conference last year. Marist has a good reputation in that conference. It's a nice win for Davidson. Hopefully they can build off of that.

Along the same lines, Fordahm beat Central Connecticut State (CCSU). CCSU is normally one of the best teams in the NEC. This was a good win for the Rams and it was a neutral court win. This victory was probably the 4th best for the conference of the weekend. This does not bode well.

VCU, Rhode Island, SLU, GW, and George Mason all failed to get a win. VCU took NC State to 5 sets. I'm not worried about VCU. Rhode Island took one from Temple, GW took one from American, and GM took one from Howard. They are all encouraging, but we need a little more information.

Saint Louis and Duquesne disappointed. SLU couldn't win a set and Duquesne just lost to cross state Lehigh. Duquesne got out-dug and out-blocked and had more hitting errors. I normally think of Duquesne as few mistakes and great D. If Duquesne can't rely on that, they are in trouble. Fordham/GW/Davidson shouldn't just be trying for 5th place, they might be able to finish in 3rd.

Dayton has a lot of room for improvement because the team played a lot of Freshman. I was unsure how the Flyers would do without Jane as setter, but Bridget and Brooke did a good job with a little help from Margo. For a Libero, she is way more than just back row D. Her above the head pass is really crisp and the numbers show that too. She had the 4th most assists in every match. It shows that even if opposing teams try to negate our back row setter by forcing them to make the first pass, Wolf is ready to make the 2nd and she does it well.

Moore didn't disappoint at middle. She is a true presence and I love her intensity and understanding of the game. She made some huge blocks and really energized the team. She doesn't have the offensive touch of Kendyll Brown yet, but I think she just needs to time.

Dayton's depth was big during the South Alabama match. Mackenzie Weaver subbed in a made some big plays. Weaver made a big block that helped to turn the momentum. Sierra Pla did the same. The lineup and how Horsmon uses it will definitely help keep opposing defenses struggling to keep up with all the possibilities they need to prepare for. The talented Freshman combined with a core group of Seniors make this a strong team.

Any ideas for Player of the Week?, Defensive Performance of the Week? or Rookie of the Week?

I think Hattie Rodriquez, Freshman OH for Davidson, made a strong case for herself as FR of the Week. She went 13/17 (hit % 0.765) in the win vs. Marist. Also 8 kills against Cent. Arkansas and 7 against W&M.

Davidson gets a home win over Charlotte in 5 sets. Davidson is now 3-1. Dayton and Davidson are the only A-10 teams with more than 1 win. Teams GW, GM, and DUQ have only played 2 matches.

Davidson beat Charlotte with wins in the 2nd 4th, and 5th. (23-25 26-24 13-25 25-10 15-11) The Wildcats gave up the first point in the 5th, but gained the lead at 2-1 and held onto the lead for good.
