Memorial Day Musings

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Nothing says 'three day weekend' better than spending some time just basically spacing out, thinking about nothing in particular...kinda like this:

-- Can there be a better sports story than Sox lefty and cancer survivor Jon Lester tossing a no-no? You can watch all 27 outs in less than five minutes here:

The play of the game was turned in by rookie sensation Jacoby Ellsbury:

Thankfully, ESPN picked up the NESN feed in the 9th inning, so I got to see the finish live. Gotta admit that it "got a little dusty" around our place when Sox manager Terry Francona and Lester hugged it out at the end.

-- Lester wasn't the only Sox hurler to have a good outing this week: Beavercreek native Justin Masterson got called up again for a spot start and responded with 6 1/3 innings of 3 hit, 1 ER ball. Masterson, nicknamed the "Jedi Master" by fans on the Sons of Sam Horn MB, is 6'6" and features an absolutely filthy sinkerball. With the wealth of quality starting pitchers that the Sox have, Justin's future is probably in the bullpen.

-- If you've got some time over this holiday weekend, invest an hour watching Carnegie Mellon prof Randy Pausch deliver "The Last Lecture" video:

Talk about it "getting dusty" the end of this one will definitely make you misty. Mrs. Swampy and I gave both of our girls Randy's excellent book for their graduation: the Elder Swampette from Chicago Kent Law School and the Younger Swampette from Michigan.

-- The YS can now die in peace: Sonic Drive In has finally opened a metro Detroit location! She first ate at one in Sean Finn's neck of the woods, Shawnee Mission, Kansas, when her travel team played in the USSSA Softball World Seres and she would get POed every time she saw one of their commercials on network cable.

-- After graduation, the ES headed to the Dominican Republic for some R&R before she starts her bar exam prep course. I told her to be sure to wear her Red Sox hat while visiting Big Papi-land.

-- If you thought Duquesne was much-improved last season, wait until this year--according to the A-10 MB, they are adding seven new recruits:

Melquan Bolding• G/F 6-4 190 Fr. 18.0 7.0 Mount Vernon, N.Y./Bishop Stepinac/Notre Dame (Mass.) Prep
Eric Evans+ G 5-10 180 Fr. 26.3 8.1a Detroit, Mich./Northwestern HS
Aleksandar Milovic• F 6-7 235 Fr. 21.1 8.2 Cetinje, Montenegro/Gymnasium
B.J. Monteiro• G/F 6-5 180 Fr. 21.3 9.9 Waterbury, Conn./Crosby
Shawntez Patterson+ F 6-7 180 Fr. 15.4 9.1 Detroit, Mich./Northwestern HS
Rodrigo Peggau• F 6-8 230 Fr. --- --- Sao Paulo, Brazil/The Patterson (N.C.) School
Chase Robinson• G 6-3 190 Fr. 23.3 7.0 Hunstville, Ala./Lee

-- Ever want to see what an "average" person looks like? Now there is a software program that allows you to do just that:

-- The whole OJ Mayo mess made me wonder if "World Wide Wes" was somehow involved. In case you don't know who he is, here are a couple of articles on Wes:

From the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/05/sp...in&oref=slogin

From MenStyle.com: http://men.style.com/gq/features/full?id=content_5735

Why am I not surprised that Memphis coach John Calipari is mentioned prominently in connection with the World Wide One?

-- Speaking of Mayo, here is how the "Hometown Coach" sees the whole "one and done" disaster in college hoops, written before the latest revelations:

Congratulations on the Sonic. We have several down here. When my biz partner visits from Dexter, MI, the first thing she does is hit Sonic for a giant Limeade. No idea how far Beverly Hills is from Dexter, but I'll tell her to keep an eye out.

Austin:

The Sonic in question is in Southgate, MI which is about 30 minutes from us and about the same from Dexter. The parking lot there was jammed at 6:00AM when they opened the other day. It's a helluva lot closer than Ft. Wayne, IN which is the next closest one.

Mrs. Swampy, the YS and I made a trip down to Southgate to eat at the new Sonic. When we first pulled in, I commented "Hey, this isn't so bad." It was then that I noticed the line of cars that snaked around the adjacent Meijer's parking lot and back up to the front. They had employees directing traffic. We decided to park and order from the take out station. Our waitress face-planted in the parking lot with a tray full of food--all of the car hops are on skates. She said she didn't hurt herself too bad. Good chow, but it made me wonder how long it's gonna take until the thrill is gone and you can go there and eat like a normal joint.

It will take at least one month and maybe one more store to open. In Dallas we have one in every nook and cranny so the family truckster can get right in. But when a new one opens, the convertibles are lined up.

My partner was excited to hear about the opening in Southgate. I'll let her know she may want to go off hours.
