What are you talking about? We haven’t won the title since 2003! We’ve rarely even made it to the finals.

That’s not a championship- at least not to the NCAA! I don’t think even the conference recognizes the regular season. Seen any trophies, rings, automatic bids??

I have seen trophies. The A10 sent them and everything. They aren't hiding, and it certainly isn't a secret. I saw us cut down the nets before too. Crazy, I know.
And if you win the A10 regular season, there's a very good chance you are getting an at large bid, regardless of conference tournament finish. That should always be the first goal.

You are 0 for 2 today! The NCAA does recognize regular season and tournament champs. They let the leagues decide the process of which the automatic bid is awarded. Most leagues have a money grab tournament to do it. Others, like the Ivy, just do a regular season title. The NCAA also awards ALL regular season champs a spot in the NIT if they don't make the NCAA tourney so they don't get left out.
Edit: The Ivy does now have a tournament. Thank you for the correction CT Flyer. Even still, all regular season titles are still recognized by the NCAA with autobids to the NIT if they do not get an at-large to the NCAA Tournament.

You really should give up. You’ve been perpetually wrong more than anyone on this site (other than maybe UDScott). It is FAR more impressive to win an 18 game conference Championship than a 3 day tournament.

Just a correction for you: The Ivy League now has a four team tournament to determine their automatic bid. It started in 2017 and they were the last league to have a postseason tournament, so all leagues currently award their automatic bid to the postseason champion.

Not that it's surprising but Jablonski saying there's one open scholarship I would guess confirms Chase Johnson isn't coming back.
Last I saw on that front they left it opened ended

Well I doubt Chase Johnson is coming back to UD, however, since he's not enrolled, it would make 0 sense to officially claim that you have a scholarship saved for him, I'm not even sure if you would be allowed or not.
I'd love to see them target a transfer PG that could sit out a year, then take over or backup the following year when Jalen and Rodney graduate.

Don't count on it. When asked several weeks ago about a succession plan at PG, AG's named 3 of the incoming freshman as being able to handle that position. In other words: welcome to the world of positionless players.

We've seen him play mutliple PGs and they were recruiting Eric Gaines into September
I don't think it'd be out of the question to bring a "true PG"

As long as they can handle the rock better than Cohill, I'm fine with that plan, in CAG I trust. Just get scared when I hear the phrase "combo-gaurd".
At any rate, I'm a fan of always having a transfer spending a year on the bench (assuming they are talented enough). Can't play 13 young men anyways, might as well have 1 or 2 that can do nothing more than work on their craft and learn the system, ready to unleash hell the following season.

I agree with this. A ready division 1 transfer experience playing PG makes the transition post Crutcher/Chatman easier. That's gonna be a team that's essentially freshman/sophomores. Another upperclassman besides Cohill could ease the transition
Multiple guys with PG skills seems like a good thing in this offense

I agree, but I thought that it is pretty much a given that the proposed transfer rule, which includes a player not having to sit out a year, is all but certain to pass?

It is not a given it will pass. As is typical with the media, we are only hearing from the football schools.

We have a supposed slew of players with a good handle on the ball. What we don't have after Obi, Chip, Trey and Chase's departure is much of an inside game. For crying out loud, can we PLEASE hit that trail?

Has it been suggested that we don’t recruit 4 and 5 star kids? I’m pretty sure we recruit and offer lot of these guys but as stated above, our reality is GETTING 3 starts and a few 4 stars.
As for the reliability of the rankings, I believe John Crosby was very highly rated, it was a huge coup that we got him over Maryland. At least it was at the time.

Yes Maryland offered him as a late add, he also took a recruiting trip to North Carolina at one point, he was considered a "good get"; obviously didn't work out.

Count me in that camp. Between the beginning of this season and the beginning of next season, we will have lost a 6’9” freak of nature, a 6’9” player with some promise, a 6’7” player with the savvy you’d expect out of a 5th year Senior, and a 6’5” guy who’s built like a brick wall and has the toughness of a Marine Sergeant. At this point, we’re replacing that talent and experience with a redshirt Freshman and a number of true Freshmen, only 1 of whom is taller than 6’7”.
We could use a 6’8”, 235 pound guy who can give us 15-20 minutes, 6 points, 5 boards, and solid D. Right now, our only hope for a guy like that is Mo, but both he and Jordy will need to stay out of foul trouble. If they can’t, then Zimi will need to find some big-boy pants ASAP.

How Zimi and Mo look in practice this year probably is a factor
I get the impression with all the wings/guards coming in there could be some 4 guard lineups in the future

I was think the same thing. I was also thinking of how AG's offense may have to change. It will be interesting to see how he can change things to match the personnel.

Count me in the camp that thinks CAG knows what he has, what it takes to win, and what he needs. I’m 100% trusting his leading as he’s more than earned it.
If he isn’t going the JUCO or Grad big route after the season is over, I’m guessing we’ll be just fine.
P.S. I remember this same discussion both the last 2 years. I think those discussions were at least in the off season.

I would be willing to bet a steak at Outback that we will be surprised by the next commitment. That's usually how it works with AG.

Gotta let it play out. I'd bet there's over a 75% chance he'll find a really good grad transfer.
What's different about this year in addition to what the program already offers is CAG likes this winning thing and these top 10 rankings probably more than he could have ever imagined, the exposure and re-appearance on the global map for UD basketball with this season's success and the ability of the staff to develop players and even a Naismith winner from a totally unknown commodity in Obi.
Me thinks he has to do alot less finding of stud players himself as that doorbell will ring alot more.

The doorbell didn't ring off the hook after the 1967 NCAA runnerup finish. The coach and staff have to work their buns off to bring in the studs. I'm confident this coach and staff is doing just that and hoping like **** they succeed.

Not discounting the effort they will have to put in.... but in 1967 I highly doubt there was the amount of free publicity there is now.

Players commit because of the head coach (reputation earned thru victories) and their relationship with the assistant coach that headed up their recruiting.
Right or wrong...like it or not...this is almost always the case for high-profile players and most of the 3-Star players on down. I don’t see how CAG doesn’t win NCOY. His first two recruits were Obi and Jalen, coming so late in the recruiting cycle when there aren’t suppose to be anyone left. Then he & his staff flat out made them superstars while building a culture of players that play for each other.
And I realize his family had a lot of say, but I think AG also played a big part in guiding Obi’s decisions last year when he returned for this season. Every card has been played correctly since Obi committed to UD three years ago. A lot of that has to do with the person Obi is and his mom Roni, who raised him right. But AG has been a big part of the man and player Obi has become as has his roommate and one of the best guards in college basketball, Jalen Crutcher.
And thus, I believe recruits and transfers will come, wanting to play for CAG at UD in an offense that is positionless, in front of sold-out crowds of the best fans in the game, at a renovated arena that’s hosted more NCAA games than any other, on a campus were basketball is king (sorry Rollo, that’s a figure of speech only), where they can work in a program that is ranked and both plays and is talked about on national tv all the time, etc, etc, etc.
It’s the combination of all that above (and the other five or six things I didn’t list) that will impact recruiting positively going forward. If you build it, they will come. In the last three seasons, no one has built what CAG & Co have built at UD.

I don’t believe the 1967 championship game was even on live national TV. Much different times. Not saying the coaching staff can just take the summer off and wait for inbound calls but the surge in publicity has to help open doors. This staff seems to know what they are looking for in recruits and appear to be able to close the deal on what they are looking for.

Seeing how AG operates I honestly don't think he will change how or who he tries to recruit. He has gone after big fish already and I think he will continue to do so, as well as still finding the hidden gems. That's why I love him as a coach, he is what you see.

I wondered how many Recruits would come today-tonight. My guess is everyone we are interested in was invited to come to be on GameDay. Huge day for UD basketball outside of a tournament game. This is the big leagues. Like Bill Parcells once said, this is a marquee stage on the Vegas stripe. not a smoke-filled lounge on some street no one knows the name of five blocks off the stripe.

So let me get this straight, you're actually trying to argue me here? Got news for you don't try it because you're totally wrong. No comparison. The game has changed, the marketing in the game has changed, the PR climate has changed and recruiting has changed.

It was on TV. I watched it. Dayton won the tip but that was it. Back in the fifties and sixties the NIT was the Big tournament. In the sixties the NCAA started to outmaneuver the NIT and became the big one.

I don’t want CAG and his assistants to change a thing in re how they recruit and who they target. I just hope that some of the physically larger recruits they’re targeting decide that they want to be a part of this team and this community.

Shawn Phillips (aka 6’10” kid from Belmont) needs to talk to Trey Landers about how great it is to represent your hometown, and play in front of your family. Trey will forever be a UD Basketball hero for how he embraced the opportunity to stay at home, commit to Coach Grant and his system, and help lift this program (HIS team; OUR team) to historic heights. Would make for a great movie (but instead of calling it “Hoosiers”, they’d need to call it “Flyers”).

Back in the 60's the NCAA Final was the only game on national TV. The semi-final with NC was carried on a UHF channel. I think it was right about 1970 they started to broadcast other games.

Yes, but not on CBS, NBC or ABC (VHF). It was on an independent channel, UHF. Our TV did not get it, so I went to a friend's house to watch it. Believe it or not, some TV's only received the three main channels.

In 1962 Dayton won the NIT. It was then the BIG tournament.
In 1962 Dayton won the NIT. It was then the BIG tournament. I think that was the one when the Pennsylvania turnpike got shut down because of snow. My parents went to New York for that game in Madison Square Garden but got snowed in on the turnpike on the way back.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1962_N...ion_Tournament
The real death knell for the NIT’s prestige probably came when the NCAA changed another rule in 1975. March Madness expanded to 32 teams that year, and the NCAA began allowing multiple teams from each conference to play in the Big Dance. (Previously only one team from each conference could play in the NCAAs.)

I recall that we quickly got down something like 33-13. It felt like our 27-0 start against Rhodey, except we were on the wrong end of it. Then we calmed down and beat them the rest of the way by about 6. Painful start, lots of nerves, and a big dose of Lew Alcindor.

Why? UD, OSU, UC aren't on the list of every recruit from Ohio. Plus, the kid is from Texas. He did a prep year in WV.

My thought in looking at his list that Huggins would not miss on a good player who is playing in his back yard. With /UC/WV/OSU all passing on him is that he is just not that good.

I noticed that, with the exception of Creighton, none of the schools that have contacted him are from “name brand” conferences. That’s OK. There are still some pretty good programs on that list (including our own UD Flyers).

Toby Okani should be in the 2020 Recruiting Thread as he is a senior in high school. He looks like a good get for Keith Dambrot. I think Dambrot is a good coach but he needs to get rid of those tan pegged pants. Not a good look!

I wonder if the following in his brother's path is a help or a hindrance. With Jacob Toppin it seemed like that wasn't a road he wanted to go down but it's different with everyone

Top-30 junior Matthew Cleveland talks recruitment, set to cut things down
Matthew Cleveland was one of the breakout prospects of the 2021 class this past season. The Pace Academy (GA) wing has 15+ high-major programs involved but is set to cut things down.
As far as programs attempting to make late pushes, Cleveland said Dayton is the newest program involved but they haven’t been talking that much.

He should want to go to the University of Dayton! I would really like to see that happen and I hope CAG does have a silent verbal agreement. I can picture Malachi doing the dabb after made three pointers! PG's are so valuable that following up Jalen Crutcher with Malachi Smith would be icing on the cake and make us solid for four more years!
I guess we just need to sit back and in AG we trust!

Scouting reports say excellent shooter, broad skill set, fair athleticism. Offers from Illinois, Creighton and TCU, according to 247 Sports. He’s said to love UConn, but Hurley hasn’t offered ... yet.

Dayton has a growing relationship with 2021 Nate Santos
Over the weekend, 2021 6’7 guard Nate Santos announced that he received his latest offer from Dayton, now giving him four total offers. The offer from the Flyers intrigued Santos, especially with the reputation the program brings with them both on and off the court. And the two have been developing a good relationship so far.
“We have a growing relationship,” Santos told Phenom Hoops. “I’ve talked to them numerous times and they have a great staff. My teammate from this past year will be at Dayton next year, so we’ve talked about Dayton before.”
The Flyers join TCU, Creighton, and Illinois as far as offers on the table but Santos also said schools like Vanderbilt, California, Georgia, Princeton, Iona, George Washington, and Ole Miss have also reached out recently.
“A lot of schools have really liked my versatility and my ability to score the ball. Also, my potential to achieve a lot more in my game.”
Santos also visited UConn this past season, getting a chance to watch a practice and their game vs. Memphis.

If he's a stud player, pretty sure the coaches can get him to clean that up. Having moved to Dayton from New Jersey as a kid, the far west was...Pittsburgh. An east coast kid I can understand. A professional media person....no go.

When Obi came for his visit, he thought he was going to Daytona. If he comes here, and he works out as well as Obi, I can forgive the DU reference.

Not sure this is true. I too heard this story, and later was told it was BS prank someone pulled and the story spread. Anyone know for sure?

My take on the whole DU thing is that it shouldn't be a big deal. To be frank, the arrogance with the correction is what annoys me. We are now branded as just "Dayton" in sports, whether intentional or not, and it's just natural to add University to it on 1st instinct. It's not like these kids grew up next door in Oakwood or even in this state for that matter... News flash: not everyone knows who Roosevelt Chapman is, or even knows that Dayton is a private Uni.

It could be worse. I heard during the football draft some of the announcers refer to Ohio State University rather than THE Ohio State University. Now that would really grate.

If we get a great kid and he can play, he can call us anything, just don't get a kid who can't play and calls us U of Dayton.

Well, he did say recently in an interview that he initially thought he was going to FL. Whether he was goofing is hard to tell.

Some speculation out there that kids will stay closer to home, where they can drive to school and drive to their campus visits.

Strange timing on the offer to Branham. Has been a perennial top-50 player at one of the bigger basketball programs in the state. He's on the cusp of a 5-star rating and has offers from some big national brands (Florida, Louisville, Illinois).
Suppose there's nothing much to lose, but you'd think UD would have been in earlier on star from less than 200 miles away.

"Just now offering" doesn't necessary mean "just now contacting."
With that said, yeah, it does seem like a late push...
