This is a great get. Kid was flying slightly under the radar, but Georgetown, VCU and St. Bonnie’s were among his offers, and Virginia was taking a look. Elite athlete who needs to be a little more consistent shooting from the perimeter, but he has the tools to improve. He’s had some impressive performances on the AAU circuit and is poised for a good prep year. He may prove to be another steal for AG.

I like him. Seems intelligent. You can tell the kid has leadership potential. He already talks and thinks like a coach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emunPw5HsY4

Another great get for the Flyers! R.J. Blakney seems to have great hops from the you tube videos I have watched. He is 6'5" or 6'6" and if he improves his outside shot he will blend with Lukas Frazier and Koby Brea who are already outstanding shooters.
I don't know if we have any schollys remaining but if AG could somehow get 6'8" Keon Ambrose-Hylton to commit that would be an outstanding class! He visited Alabama last weekend and is expected to announce soon.

We do have another scholarship to give. My guess is it goes to Keon if he wants it; otherwise I suspect Grant holds it to test the transfer market come spring. Incidentally, Keon is at Alabama THIS weekend.

A transfer PG with 2 or 3 years eligibility would be ideal considering we lose our only two PG's after 2 more seasons.

If Obi heads to the NBA as we all expect, Grant will pick up a second scholly. So he could get Keon and still target a PG in the spring.

Does this pick up mean it’s likely Koby redshirts?
Seems like all 3 2020 guys overlap

People come and people go. It's all good. There will be a player leaving next year NBA and/or politely escorted out...most likely both.
To take the keys as the main point guard of the flyers should be very appealing to a top ranked point guard.

I have a hard time believing we will fill 5 scholarships with Freshman (counting Obi's). If Ambrose does decide on UD, have to seriously believe they would look at a junior PG transfer who sits out 2020 and has two years eligibility. That would allow them to still pick up a 2021 and a 2022 PG. Gaines isn't out of the picture and could sign in the spring, but man, that's a lot of freshman on the team and makes the class balance way out of whack. Still, gotta strike while the iron is hot and if these are your guys, you take em when you get em. Happy about the Blakney pickup. I think we have SG and SF covered pretty well at this point.

After spending a season coaching soccer with 19 girls available for 11 positions on the field, I can tell you that if I was Grant it would not break my heart one bit to have a couple open scholarships. I totally get his philosophy of taking only players who fit, and even playing with 8 or 9 if you have to. It's WAY better than:
1. Waiting for an underperformer who is happy to sit on the bench to graduate so I can get my scholly back, -and-
2. Bringing in a top flight guy to meet the team and he sees the schmuck from #1 and thinks to himself "this is the quality of UD basketball?? Nope. I'm going somewhere else."
If no one is there, let it ride and see if anything comes from transfers.

Ive mentioned this in other threads, but it appears a common "thread" among Grant's recruits is they are generally long, lean, and athletic with big wingspans at all positions. I always remember playing John Chaney teams and his guys seemed like albatrosses on the court. They were all 6-5, 6-6, 6-7, 6-9. Long arms. Obviously we dont play a 2-3 zone but defensively those same physical attributes come in handy.
Isnt it Chapman who has some goofy arm length ratio compared to his size thats like equivalent to a 6-6 player?

Nice article. Seems like he did a lot of eating on his visit.
Does it also seem with our new recruits that we are going back to our old way of recruiting out of the Catholic high schools around the East and Midwest? I think AG with his college and professional coaching experience has a way of connecting with high school players who realize that he is a person who can coach and school him in basketball to the next level wherever that may be and also cares about the player on a personal level too.
These old bones are very excited about UD basketball this and upcoming years even if we probably only have Obi for this year.

Not too many posts about RJ (probably because of recent commitments by two others), but I’m excited about this guy.
He seems like a do-it-all type of player. I predict he comes in as a freshman and makes immediate and tangible contributions on the defensive end.

After a 12 game winning streak to run their record to 17-5 the Loomis Chaffee school lost an away game 67-62 to Salisbury yesterday. I could not find the box score but R.J. Blakney has quietly had a good season averaging close to 20 ppg. His team has one more game remaining before tournaments on 2/29 vs. the Hotchkiss School.
I am looking forward to seeing how all four of our additions will help the team next season however there has been some talk that Koby Brea may be redshirted because he is so young and needs to bulk up.

Spoke to
@DaytonMBB freshman Zimi Nwokeji about his adjustment to college. He told me they tested his body fat today & is down from 17% on day 1 (he loves pizza *♂️) to 9% now! He’s been there less than 60 days! I’m proud of him & impressed by the Strength & Conditioning Staff!

I thought Zimi looked a little heavier than he should be when he arrived. But a 8% reduction is amazing in 60 days. Kudos Zimi, transforming his body in Year 1. He will be a beast

I thought he looked really lean? It's hard to tell since he's always in jumpers and hoodies though. I'd love to hear how he's holding up on practice. He looks tall and long, which we'll need.

I don't know of Brea will redshirt or not, and I'm not ready to look forward, but when I see
Crutcher
Chatman
Frazier
Matos
Nwokeji
Tshamanga
Sissoko
Blakney
Cohill
Brea
Watson
I see a pretty good team. Watson will start next year with Chatman and Crutcher, along with (calling it now), Nwokeji and Sissoko, unless Jordy makes huge strides.
And that of course depends on whether Chase comes back (doubtful) and Obi being gone, what happens with any transfers/grad transfers etc.
There's a super athletic team ready for next year. I think Zimi will surprise and RJ will too.

I don't think it matters if Jordy starts or not. I can't see him on the floor for more than 20 minutes if that. Even if he cuts down on fouling, which I hope he does, I doubt he's got the stamina to give us many more minutes.

I think I Jordy should take some ballet lessons. I think he just has trouble controlling his body.

The Loomis Chaffee Pelicans boys basketball team ran their record to 18-5 and defeated Hotchkiss 82-75 on Senior Day, Saturday, February 29 to win the Founders League title. They are now the No. 1 seed in the Class A New England Prep School Athletic Conference Tournament.
Hotchkiss came into the game undefeated in league play with Loomis Chaffee in second place behind them. R.J. Blakney's team started hot with an 8-2 lead and Blakney had an emphatic dunk during that run! The Pelicans went cold, however, and trailed by 7 points before taking a 1 point lead into the half. Four of the Pelicans 5 starters were in double figures and were led by one of their four seniors, 5'11" PG Josh Menard with 25 pts. Blakney was also 1 of the 4 in double figures.
The Pelicans next take on the Noble and Greenough School, Wednesday, March 4th in the first round of NEPSAC tournament action.

I have been permanently ruined by watching Obi Toppin. He might have better body control than anyone in NCAA basketball this year. He pulls off some athletic moves that are unthinkable.

Highlights from RJ’s Championship game. Very athletic with a nice stroke. He will be a contributor next year. The Hustle (@TheHoopHustle) Tweeted:
As he did throughout the ‘19-‘20 season, future-@DaytonMBB wing RJ Blakeny (@Walbrook_Rj8) was dominant from start to finish while leading @LC_BoysBBALL to the 2020 NEPSAC-A Championship.

Guessing it was based on the way everyone celebrated at the end, but it wasn't a very well-attended championship game.

Uhhh.... nothing is well attended at the moment although there were some people there, so perhaps it was before all the gathering bans.
It was a prep school championship, so attendance in general is likely very different than your local high school.

I would put it differently. Moulaye gets more minutes as the first player off the bench. The over and under of Jordy getting his second foul is 6 minutes. He gets the first foul checking in at the scorers table.

Jordy will be a redshirt senior and is 6'11". He'll be the "starter" even if Sissoko ends up with more minutes. Only caveat is if Sissoko can consistently beat Jordy jumping tip, then he may be on the floor for that.

There are 6 different divisions in the NEPSAC and Loomis Chaffee plays in Class A, which is #3 in terms of size, so yeah RJ was not putting up those numbers against the big boys like New Hampton or Brewster:

I think it's wise for Flyer fans to take Blakney's performance with a grain of salt. That team in the championship game highlights was more Washington Generals than Harlem Globetrotters.
It bears noting though that Loomis Chaffee has produced 13 D1 basketball players in the past five years, including a player that went to Stanford and Davidson's Nelson Boachie-Yiadom.
The team they played in the championship, The Hotchkiss School, has, in the past decade, produced players that went to Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, Marquette and St. Joe's.
As with all prospects, extrapolating a player's future is a difficult business. For whatever the competition, it certainly bodes well that Blakney was the MVP rather than a complementary player.

Not sure if this link has been posted but watching videos I think RJ really has what it takes to be a stud he’s long lengthy and has all the athleticism in the world. In one of the articles the link shows ranks him as the #3 player in New England prep which is ahead of a Miami (FL), Syracuse, and Kentucky commit. I think he will make an immediate impact and maybe earn some all a10 honors down the road!!

Just talked to my friend who coaches Putnam Science Academy and he said they did not play Loomis Chaffee this year but he did see him at a tournament they were both in. His evaluation of RJ was that he was a high major.

That’s in line with most of the evaluations I’ve seen. He was one of the top prep players in New England which included several top 100 HS players.

Aren't we overdue for a new thread? Where have all our recruits gone? Not Dayton so far evidently. Should we start to worry? I thought we would have a transfer by now at least.

I'm a big fan of RJ. Seems like A+ effort guy, fluid looking release and good if not not great athlete. Competes at a high level.
Reminds me of VCU guys of years past. I think he is an immediate contributor with rebounding, running, defense and effort.
Potential talent level of Cohill and the effort level of Landers at 6'5-6'6.
I like that. If we can get an another competitor and grinder like Trey with a slightly taller, more athletic body. We'll be a very good, very lucky program

There are 79 forwards and 17 centers on the Portal, who are still undecided. Now I'm sure half of those could not beat Ralph Hill one on one, but still some players out there.

At this point the reference has probably swung to a much lower probability we aren’t having the off-season transfer recruiting season we all thought we would. I’m confident we sign one or two more players but there are fewer fish in the pond at this point.
On a positive note, we have to acknowledge the season we had last year did land us Zimi. There was a coach to coach connection plus we were ranked high the end of December when he committed. I expect him to contribute early and often.

You can withdraw from school and still be enrolled. Many students take a break for a semester or year and are still technically enrolled in school.
Edit:
Plus, we have no clue if Chase was still taking classes online at home or not. Just because he left campus, doesn't mean he wasn't taking online classes.

1. Chase did medically withdrawal from UD. He was not enrolled the spring semester for at least 12 credits. Maybe 3-6 credits part time online.
2. I don’t think this is a rule - has to be enrolled. Volleyball roster has had the incoming freshmen up on the roster for over a month. That is earlier than usual, probably because spring season was cancelled and campus closed.
In the past they have gone in order of when the sport starts. Women’s soccer freshmen are up and have bio info. Volleyball just has the freshmen names, jersey numbers, hometowns basic info.

There's a lot to like about Blakney. Effort, defense, blocks, willingness to hit the Offensive glass. Check out the dunks at 1:00 and everything after the 2:20 mark...wow. He's explosive.
