Red Scare vs. Golden Eagles 4 PM
Let's start a new one
Extremely tough... I feel we are definitely the underdog
Same starting 5... Davis x2, Landers, Oliver, Thompson

Golden Eagles playing smothering D. We had success going backside cuts. Well have to fight for every shot. They have more depth. Might be a factor. Need some O from DO.

Team looks good aside from Devin. I didn't see the first game, but he's played selfish basketball from what I've seen. Landers looks like a beast, RM looks really good too.

I think we are getting out-rebounded and that has to change for us to win.

DO missed a couple shots and seems to force the game right now. He needs to relax. Thompson back in. We are so much better with him on the floor.

He is way out of sync. He needs to sit. Trying to force the ball with the dribble, which he could never do.

Robinson only played about a minute yesterday and nothing today. Might be injured?
That means a 7-man roster.

All the more need for DO to find some game. Made a nice steal and assist to Mikesell. Find a way to contribute. We could use more boards. They are getting too many second chances.

Advantage Red Scare in 2nd half since they’ll be going towards the goal where you’re allowed 5 steps.

Devon woke up in the second half. Scare is still having problems with ball security and dribble penetration.

Need to get McMahon some more shots. Too much dribbling inside without kicking the ball out like the Eagles are doing. Thompson is very quiet today.

Thought Red Scare looked out of gas midway through 3rd. But down 4 going into 4th it looks like the 2nd wind might have come. At least for some of them. And I don’t count Trey in that because he doesn’t know the meaning of the word “tired”.

Lack of discipline
Lack of discipline by me! I told myself to not look on here all week, watch the games I DVR when I get back home from vacation late tonight, yet I am still checking the game thread now!
Keep me updated in the fourth. Love to hear the reports that RM & TL have not missed a beat.

Mikesell needed to be aware of the clock. GE wanted the foul inside 4 minutes so Ryan should have hoisted the 3 vs trying to drive around the defender.

Just not enough players to play the fourth quarter. They needed about two more good ones.
Mikesell is a great player. I hope he and Landers return next year.

Tough to win this tournament with a 7-8 man roster. Thompson was great with fresh legs. Add Tillman next year and keep Thompson. Add a point guard. Mikesell and Trey were great. Loved seeing these guys play again. Next year in Dayton will be wild. Great job by a young team. Three guys just out of college all played well.

Wonder how today would’ve gone in front of 10000 at UD Arena. Good pool to pull from next year for roster additions. Pierre, Pollard, Crutch (unless he’s TOO good), Ibi, Scooch. Would love to see 11 or 12 on the roster. Would love to have Tillman down low with Thompson if VCU doesn’t have a team.

You can't count on any players to play in this tournament. It's hit and miss based on what they have lined up for their post college careers. But I'll bet that Crutcher does not play in this tourney, anyone with legit NBA dreams, just won't and shouldn't. They should be trying to get someone like Kahri Price.

Some mistakes from Mikesell. When Trey carries an offense, it tells me we lack firepower. D-Mo underachieved. Pierre would have helped. 18-8 run after we took 62-61 lead.
If it's at UD Arena next year, let's field our best roster yet and win it.

Took the lead 62 to 61 and then everything went to crap! Ryan bricks a 3, 2 DD's Devin and Trey, Mikesell charge, and an awful Ryan pass.
Eagles clearly the better team though.

Fun to Root for the Flyers Today
The best team won. Best of luck to them in the Finals. An under-rosterred Red Scare team gave it all they had and over-achieved.

I'm proud of our overall effort. What we see here in the TBT is what the Flyers would look like without Obi to unbalance the floor and create opportunities for everyone else. Let's face it, we got really spoiled watching Jalen, Obi and company stomp on opponents.
We saw some of that expertise show up on Friday in the second half with some great cutting and passing for layups. But today we ran out of gas and lost concentration.
Proud of our Flyer veterans, and coach Gruden as well.

We've seen many teams without an Obi. That's something we should be used to. But from watching our Flyers with 2 point guards on the floor to the Red Scare with no point guards on the floor is what stood out to me. Kind of took me back to Smith' and Sylvester's first two years at UD.

Too much one on one from DO. KD gave us little, was a liability on offense. Trey played as well as I’ve ever seen him.

Hopefully Landers and Mikesell made themselves a lot more money this past week...they played great against guys who have been playing professionally for many years
DO played terrible all tournament...he gets back to normal, add a true PG and some depth (Pierre and Pollard) and they'll be in business next year

If we get Mikesell and Landers back next year and add a guy like Tillman (maybe Pierre) I'm leaning towards not starting a guy like DMO. I'm not convinced he's a better player than Trey or Chip. Both outplayed him this year but Landers is tougher, better athlete, rebounds and grinds just as hard. Chip is as good of dribbler, likely better passer, shooter and playmaker.
KD3 at this point is a bench guy. High effort but he offers little on the offensive end. Not sure how many times Kyle got blocked this year but it seems like 4+ in 3 games on lay ups. Glad to see the boys again but the PG need is glaring.
If we can't recruit SS11 get Chatman or Lowery or ask Dillard to come back or go get a dude like Troy Caupain. Or a VCU/ URI/ SLU/ SBU guard.
A guy like Caupain would be a PG that fits in well with the Flyers.
Red Scare needs a guy who can help others get shots.

Agree with all this. I think lack of true PG (or 2) and 7 man roster just killed their chances. Then they just ran out of gas at the end; that's when the T/O's started playing out. I think you really need at least 9 and maybe 10 guys to all play to really compete. Don't think the Golden Eagles were any better, just deeper and it showed at the end. RM and TL probably improved their stock a lot since there's virtually no showplaces right now for basketball. Sure hope so; both those guy are quality players and deserve looks.

If this thread is any indication, we are going to have plenty of message board material this fall with the revamped Flyer lineup. Should be fun.
We might be overthinking this, but what else is there in a pandemic year.

What happened to Justin Tillman's family is tragic. Although he would have been a great addition to the team, I'm surprised that he even considered playing after his father passed and his mother was sick. Many prayers go to him and his family.
I haven't heard anything about why Rob Lowery dropped out. COVID risk? Professional contract? He would have been a major weapon controlling and distributing the ball.
I saw an announcement on July 8th that Pierre signed a contract to play in Israel. That negotiation may have been a factor in his not playing.
I didn't see any details about Pollard's decision.
As mentioned, there are a lot of factors in play for building a team and keeping them together through the tournament.

I will be shocked if Golden Eagles don’t win it all. They had the best defense I saw in the tournament. It was tough. I’d say RS had the second best before tired legs set in with a short roster. Learn from it for next year. I believe both of Tillman’s parents passed way within weeks of each other. No way he could or should have played. Just need to be deeper next year. You can’t win this event with a 7-8 man roster. This will especially true if they expand the number of teams back to the original 64 Again next year.
The bright spot is it looks like the eventual champion will have knocked RS out both years. That and a Final Four run this year should get us a top 5 seed next year.

I was proud of their effort and ability to play without an experienced point guard.
It's interesting (to me) that I had so many flashbacks, a lot of them frustrated flashbacks. DO still takes shots at inappropriate times and circumstances. I cringe at half his shots. I think he feels that during droughts it is his duty (as the leader) to toss it up. I thought his defense and rebounding intensity (and of course hustle) were exceptional.
DD still dribbles too much. He broadcasts his intention to wander (seemingly aimlessly) through his early body language and gets mugged. His long bombs, however were a thing of beauty.
My only disappointment was with KD. He appeared lost out there. I guess he hasn't played organize ball for a long time ... at least that is how he looked to me. I thought this made him a liability.
However, it was a lot of fun watching "old timer's day games".

I think Kyle Davis' problem centered on the need to play him at the point. He was like a fish out of water in that role. He likes to get out on a break and let a point guard hit him with a timely pass. He could not do that in the tournament.

Hopefully Landers and Mikesell made themselves a lot more money this past week...they played great against guys who have been playing professionally for many years
DO played terrible all tournament...he gets back to normal, add a true PG and some depth (Pierre and Pollard) and they'll be in business next year
|
Why? Because I never expect a Flyer team to lose. It's that simple.

Well I was going to be a smart butt and say these games do not matter because Figgie did not post stats for the game, but before I posted I thought I would double check, and lo and behold Figgie does have stats posted from the three games. You Da Man Figgie! Of course the +/- was what I was looking for and it seams to be MIA

Kahri Price was listed at 5'9" at Southern Miss, and his stats were not good there over his 2 years. He had knee problems with his Dayton stint. He was not a fast guard. The Red Scare can do better than that. Not likely he would wander away from Slidell to play in TBT either.

Watching Red Scare's
guards dribble the basketball against aggressive ball pressure applied by Marquette should make all Flyer fans appreciate the back court that AG puts on the floor.

GE's looked like they had practiced together quite a bit. Ran a lot of actual plays. They also played really tight physical D. Was really impressed the RS were able to keep it as close as it was with only 7 guys and DMO not playing up to his usual level. Great run and really made a great week for me to be able to see some actual live bball. Watching the GW game for the 40th time was starting to get old.

they looked a bit more than we did... it
was fun to watch...
DO too much dribbling, twice I saw him
dribble the ball of his foot... Ryan 2
consecutive turnovers...
but all things said, it was fun to watch bb again..
makes me appreciate our backcourt now
Go Flyers!

The way I look at it is that Marquette had their Obi Toppin equivalent (Dwyane Wade), and they still couldn't beat us at our place. I'd much rather continue to beat them when it really matters.

you add, say, Scoochie and Chris Wright,
there's a darn good team right there...
it was fun

The Golden Eagles had a deep bench, 4 former NBA players, and a 7 day training/practice camp at Marquette before the tourney (according to the broadcast last night). Red Scare had no point guard, a short bench, no former NBA players, and no practice together until they got to Columbus (to the best of my knowledge).
They did dam* well in my opinion.

I wonder if having college ball quite a ways in the rare-view mirror and playing international ball for a living takes away that love and excitement needed to play your top game for a tournament like this

He also was trying to dribble into traffic without kicking the ball out. He had numerous turnovers that you could see coming every time he put the ball on the court. US defenders have quicker hands and feet than the Europeans or others.

Not buying this. Last summer Red Scare rose and fell with Devin. You could see the joy and passion in his face and in his play. It meant everything to him. His tweets this summer before, during, and after the tournament tells me that the love and excitement were still very much there. He really felt bad about his play this year and took it personally. This despite posting a double double in the Quarters. So he had moments this year. It just didn’t come together consistently. But I don’t doubt his love, excitement, or passion. Nor his love of Flyer Nation.

Last year was a reunion of sorts. Kyle, Kendall, Dillard and Vee were all former Flyers teammates of his and it was the first time they played together since at least 2014. This year the only former teammate was Kyle. I could see it being more exciting for him last year than this year. You just can't always stir up the same excitement every time. He did not play with the passion this year.

Trey is an example of how a player can find a niche on the court and translate himself into a very good basketball player. He knows his game is blue collar and he keeps it that way.
