Pick Me Up

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- I love me some pickup hoops. There is something to be said about pulling a few guys together who barely know each other and having them form a cohesive team on the court. I'm more of a half-court man vs. full-court, as it provides maximum basketball with minimum track meet and it places an emphasis on defense. Pickup hoops is best played outdoors, but unfortunately here in Michigan the window of opportunity is rapidly drawing to a close, altho I have played outside in December in years past.

Here are several articles on the subject:

What are the rules of pick-up basketball?

I'm a "ones and twos; make it/take it; take everything back to the three point line; game to 11; win by two" kinda guy myself.

How to Fix Pickup Basketball With Analytics

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/vi...ith-analytics/

The author is not a fan of ones and twos, as it places a 50% premium on three point shots. Which is exactly why I always want to play the game scoring in that fashion.

25 Misunderstood Rules in High School Basketball

http://bcrefs.com/MisunderstoodRules.htm

I've taken to carrying a printed copy of this list with me when I play. The rules that are most frequently misunderstood?

The sides, top, and bottom of a rectangular backboard are IN BOUNDS

A “kicked” ball must be intentional

A player can always recover his/her fumbled ball; a fumble is not a dribble, and any steps taken during recovery are not traveling, regardless of progress made and/or advantage gained!

Elsewhere in the wide world of hoops:

-- The Flyers are included in Eamon Brennan's Top Ten list of teams outside his "No-Longer-Way-Too-Early Top 25":

-- Because of the roster numbers crunch, Jordan's Sibert's invitation to the Orlando Magic's training camp will most probably result in him being assigned to the Erie Bayhawks of the NBADL:

Since my wife and I travel to Erie on a regular basis to see her mom, I hope to be able to see JS play this fall/winter.

-- It should come as no surprise to any of us here that UD is listed among the top party schools in America, according to StartClass.com:

-- Tremendous story about former Flyer great Henry Finkel facing off vs. Wilt Chamberlin from Tom Heinsohn, as he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame (for the 2nd time). The Finkel story starts at the 12:55 mark:

-- TSN Mike penned the following five part series on HoF Coach John Calipari:

The Target: http://www.sportingnews.com/calipari/target
The Citizen: http://www.sportingnews.com/calipari/citizen
The Strategist: http://www.sportingnews.com/calipari/strategist
The Salesman: http://www.sportingnews.com/calipari/salesman
The Success: http://www.sportingnews.com/calipari/success

I'm sorry, but Coach Cal will always be a total weasel in my book because of Alex Carmona, the native of Puerto Rico who played at Troy HS. Carmona wanted to sign with UD and play for OP, but was blocked from doing so by Cal and one of his "handlers." Yeah, that was 13 years ago, but I have a long memory. Sue me.

-- Has UD ever lost a commitment from a potential recruit due to a shoe contract? Matt Norlander at CBS Sports asked 90 college coaches that question and the answer is most likely "probably":

-- St. Joe's DeAndre Bembry wants to live in the present and not dwell on his very bright future:

-- Next time you think about blowing past that toll booth on the highway, think again -- it could cost you thousands:

-- This is the strange story of the drug dealing 'entrepreneurs' who created and sold the "Yankees Suck" t-shirts for years outside of Fenway Park:

-- They say that the best way to determine the true measure of a man is to observe how he keeps score on the golf course. Given that, would you vote for this man?
