A-10 ball - 2016 Weekend #5

Big news out recently. Rhode Island head coach Bob Schneck has announced his retirement at the end of the season. He is coaching his 36th straight season with the Rams. A-10 volleyball has only existed with Bob Schneck coaching at Rhode Island. Bob Schneck currently has 606 wins with the Rams, has won the A-10 tourney 3 times, and coached a team in the a-10 championship match 11 times. In 1982 A-10 vball consisted of Rhody, Rutgers, GW, Temple, West Virginia, and Penn State. PSU and Rutgers have left and gone to the big ten, wvu has gone to the big east and now the big 12, temple has gone to the AAC, teams like Virginia Tech, Xavier, Charlotte, and Butler have joined and then left. And St. Bonaventure and UMass started playing volleyball but the ended their volleyball programs. Crazy how long he has been in the A-10. 2017 will truly be a new era in a-10 volleyball.

Back to actual volleyball. Dayton looks like the top team and it doesn't even feel close. Dayton comes into conference play with a 26 match conference winning streak. Dayton's biggest obstacle looks like it is Saint Louis on the road. Dayton hasn't played any tough road matches, so it could be a challenge. Based on Dayton's big wins against SIU and Miami (OH) they should cruise through the rest of the matches. Dayton plays GW and GM at home this weekend. In the past couple years Dayton vs GW has been competitive, but this year feels different. GW still has a great senior middle blocker, so a good chance to practice the blocking and back row defense.

SLU vs GW seems like a much more compelling match. These two teams could be competing for runner up again. La Salle plays at Fordham. La Salle tries to continue their successful year and the get a match against the other team that is usually at the bottom of the A-10 with them. Duquesne at Rhode Island. Davidson at VCU. No matter how weak the A-10 is, 6 teams still make the tourney. 4th places feels wide open so these games could be exciting.

Finally, La Salle has a new social media campaign. It is #NeverLost, because an explorer is Never Lost. I hope NeverLost starts trending after the next Dayton vs La Salle volleyball match, because Dayton has never lost to La Salle. Does anyone think through these slogans???

SLUs great Sr OH Dani Rygelski had a career night against GM. 3 set match. She puts down 31 kills, 10 digs and 6 blocks. Just send her the A10 POW award now and probably the National POW award too.

GW and SLU in a dog fight. SLU is up 2-0 but both set won by 2 points, the second one in OT 29-27. Rygelski scored 4 of SLUs last 7 points attacking out of the back row.

SLU sweeps winning the 3rd 25-17. Rygelski hits over 300. With her career day against GM, she will be A10 POW.
