Williams' Goals Down LaSalle 2-0

DAYTON (OH) -- Colleen Williams scored twice in the first half to pace the Dayton Flyers past the visiting LaSalle Explorers 2-0 on a chilly October afternoon at Baujan Field. Dayton improves to 10-2 (2-0), while LaSalle falls to 6-6-1 (0-2).

Dayton started off well to open the match and knocked the ball around with relative ease. LaSalle had trouble generating any sort of possession -- let alone offense moving forward -- and UD took advantage by pushing the Explorers into their defensive third over the opening 15 minutes.

Some solid buildup turned into opportunities on offense over the next 10 minutes, but the Flyers weren't as clean-footed near the box as they were against Fordham on Friday night. The timing was also a bit off and runs through the LaSalle back line were not rewarded with the same high-level passes either. Still, Dayton dominated the run of play and though some good scoring chances came and went, fans never got the feeling that the match was outside of the Flyers' control.

Colleen Williams made up for the missed UD opportunities earlier in the half by knocking a Kelsey Miller serve past her defender on the left side of the box and finishing with a side volley from a poor angle. The high-quality strike from 15 yards out put Dayton up 1-0 in the 34th minute.

Just four minutes later the Flyers found the net again. Williams finished a purposeful serve in the box along the right side with a two-touch effort, but Allison Giner did most of the hard work by beating her defender on the baseline, turning the corner, and finding Williams lurking un-marked. That put Dayton up 2-0 and looking good headed into halftime despite the up-and-down play of the first half that saw good buildup but suspect finishing; Josie Grant could have made it 3-0 had she polished off a 1 vs. 1 with the Explorer goalkeeper.

The Flyers out-shot the Explorers 11-2 in the first half and owned a commanding 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

The second half played out much like the first, though LaSalle put forth a better effort at times to force the Flyers to keep hustling. The possession and buildup were still there, but the last 30 yards remained a problematic hurdle. Dayton used a bunch of players throughout the match to crack the code, but the second half would end up scoreless.

Final match stats were all Dayton with a 24-6 advantage in shots and 9-1 domination in corners.

Defensively, the Flyers were very good over the last 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers came out of her box a couple times to turn LaSalle scoring chances away (the few LaSalle had all afternoon), while the back line held strong and remained organized in front of her.

Central defender Kelsey Miller once again had a strong outing and is working her way onto the A10 First Team with her level of play. She's doing her best work in traffic and playing with confidence. The Flyer program has a long and distinguished history of star central defenders and Miller is cut from that same mold in size, skills, and a big clearance out of the back. Her maturation, like those before her, has been enjoyable to watch.

The second half lacked a lot of excitement, but the result was there and that's what was ultimately most important as Dayton finished the weekend with two victories and a pair of clean sheets. Williams added her 10th and 11th goals of the season, keeping her atop the A10 in scoring and a front-runner for A10 Offensive Player of the Year.

The other side of that headline is Dayton continues to search for a second striker to take on a portion of the scoring burden. Several players have had their names called, but none have stepped up to become the obvious #2 option on offense. Against weak foes in the A10, it's unlikely to be a problem. In the A10 tournament and possibly NCAA tourney however, better teams will simply triple-team Williams and force UD to prove someone else can carry the freight.

At a solid 10-2 (2-0), UD remains at Baujan Field for the last home-stand of the season as they battle Rhode Island and UMass next weekend.
