Smile Oakland Opportunistic in 2-0 Win over Flyers

The Dayton Flyers and Oakland Golden Grizzlies battled competitively for 90 minutes, but the road team made their offensive chances count as a pair of second half goals up-ended Head Coach Dennis Currier's squad 2-0 on Saturday evening at Baujan Field. UD falls to 3-3-0 while Oakland improves to 3-2-0.

The opening kickoff signaled the start of what would ultimately be a 90-minute battle of two evenly-matched teams. The first 10 minutes were highly energetic on both sides as UD and Oakland traded blows as possession swung back and forth across the pitch. Counter-attacks were the most dangerous and effective scoring opportunities for either team, leveraging the width of the field to play to the corner flags and stretch apart the opposing defenses.

Speed was an important tool to create separation as Oakland showcased a quick pace and purpose to their game that forced the Flyers to keep their shape and track back in the defensive half of the field.

The Flyers had a handful of great scoring opportunities over the next 20 minutes of play, driving low crosses through the face of the six-yard box that were just out of reach of Dayton shoelaces for the redirected toe-tap. Senior Maik Schoonderwoerd had a couple chances in the box, but couldn't get an out-stretched leg on the ball.

Unable to cash in on crosses, UD had little luck generating conventional shots on goal. Oakland felt the same frustration as both sides took turns moving the ball up field and had trouble finding seams within quality striking distance to put a quality shot on frame.

The first half ended with UD owning a 7-1 advantage in shots, while corner kicks favored Oakland 2-1.

The Golden Grizzlies stepped up their game in the second half by generating more sustained possession. Still, possession alone wasn't enough and Oakland continued to lose the battle for shots on goal to the Flyer back line.

The same story held at the opposite end of the field as Dayton once again had chances, but many of them were half-chances from loose balls in the mixer. For the first 15 minutes after the re-start, it felt like one goal would win the match -- if either team could score at all.

Oakland finally found the back of the net in the 63rd minute on a rocketed blast from outside the goal box that tucked into the upper 90 of the far post to put the Grizz up 1-0. It was a high-class shot and well-earned.

The Flyers were not out it, but they needed an equalizer and surrendering a second goal might stick a fork in things. Just five minutes later, Oakland jabbed the jugular with a redirected ball after a corner kick opportunity hit the crossbar and the Flyers failed to clear the ball out of danger.

With less than 30 minutes to claw back from a 2-0 deficit, there was no time to waste. Unfortunately, Dayton never generated enough dangerous scoring chances on frame to test the Oakland goalkeeper and give themselves an honest chance. Dayton MF Amass Amankona was the conduit for much of the second half and in most cases that leads to good things, but Oakland's midfield did a nice job off keeping Amankona off balance to force lateral touches of the ball.

Dayton spent the last 15 minutes sending long balls into the Oakland goal box, but most lacked purpose and were easily turned away. Corner kicks were equally unsuccessful, though the Flyers did manage to find a head on a couple balls that sailed over the crossbar. The Golden Grizzlies salted the remaining minutes away for the workman-like road victory.

The match was a tale of one side capitalizing on chances and the other side struggling to respond in-kind. UD out-shot Oakland 12-8, but shots on goal were just 3-3 -- an indication of how few and far between quality scoring opportunities were. It's a disappointing result considering both teams were evenly matched and the Flyers had the benefit of the home field and friendly crowd. Much like the 3-2 loss at Marquette, Dayton was probably good enough to win but failed to take advantage.

UD hosts Northern Kentucky next Friday at Baujan Field.
