Thumbs up MSOC: Flyers Dominate 2nd Half But Fall 1-0 to URI

The Dayton Flyers were hoping for a third-straight victory, but the Rhode Island Rams had other ideas. A high-level, first half goal put URI on top and the visitors held off a massive second half Flyer surge as UD fell 1-0 on Saturday evening at Baujan Field. With the loss, Dayton falls to 5-6-2 (2-2-0) while Rhode Island improves to 7-3-1 (3-1-1).

The first half started well for Dayton as they controlled a majority of possession and found ways to move forward with quick touches and triangle passing through the midfield. UD earned a pair of early corner kicks to serve long balls into the Ram goal box, but could not redirect the service with dangerous shots on goal.

Rhode Island countered with perhaps the best scoring chance of the first half around 10 minutes in. A cross in the box was deflected onto goal and required a big-time reaction from Flyer GK Marc Kouadio to keep the match scoreless.

The Rams struck paydirt in the 24th minute on a beautiful piece of individual brilliance as Isak Oystese one-time-volleyed a chest trap from 25yds out that chipped Kouadio to the left post to take the early 1-0 lead. URI produced the goal after a quick counter-attack at midfield.

The next 10 minutes were a bit sloppy as UD struggled to link passes together, suffering from unforced errors that resulted in loss of possession and URI counter-attacks. The Rams eventually earned a free kick one minute before the end of the half about 25yds out. While the referee was spray-painting the field and Kouadio was setting up a wall, URI took the quick kick that found the far post, but the goal was disallowed for being struck during an apparent fair-play stoppage so the defense could set their feet 10yds away. The Flyers lucked out because the kick appeared clearly within the rules.

After a solid start to the half, UD lost steam over the course of 45 minutes and could not keep their shape and precision as they pushed forward into the offensive third. Execution suffered near the URI goal box and so too a failure to produce quality shots on frame.

The Flyers went into halftime down a goal and without much scoring punch to show for it as halftime stats favored URI 7-1 in shots (4-0 on goal). UD earned a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Restarting play after intermission, UD needed better play in the attack to manufacture scoring chances and ultimately shots on goal. To their credit, the level of play improved considerably. More urgency and quicker pace afforded the Flyers more room to maneuver on and off the ball as they pushed forward. Though shots on goal remained few and far between, the build-up proved far more effective and by the 60th minute, UD was dominating possession and the overall run of play.

Dayton also exerted more physicality as the second half continued, winning loose balls and intense midfield challenges to win possession and counter with service to the wings. The wide-field play created several crosses in the box, including a dangerous feed across the grass from 4yds out that slid through without a far-post runner waiting to knock it in.

While URI had a couple chances of their own to push forward for an insurance goal, the UD back line did well to battle against the physically-imposing Ram strikers to keep the deficit to just a goal. When Dayton stopped those chances, they countered out of the back line with give-and-go's in tight spaces to get out of trouble and find open midfielders waiting to push forward.

The last 10 minutes were a final flurry of goal-scoring opportunities. UD earned a bevy of corner kicks but too many were either poorly taken and never cleared the first near-post defender, or squirted through the box and cleared away. A pair of CKs in the final 60 seconds failed to net the equalizer and the score ended at 1-0.

Second half stats illustrated the more competitive Flyer attack as shots were even at 8-8 while corner kicks were dominated 6-1. UD managed just two shots on goal however and that was the difference in the match. It was a frustrating result considering the much-improved play of the second half. The Flyers controlled 65% of the possession and forced the Rams to defend in a bunker for extended stretches, but the final touch, redirect, or shot on frame never materialized to send the game into extra time. It was also a missed opportunity to knock off one of the A10 leaders and make up ground in the A10 standings.

Dayton resumes action next Saturday with a road match at #14 Saint Louis -- currently atop of the A10 standings.
