Gruden pays the price
Sad to see one of our own getting the boot, but Jon Gruden’s racist and homophobic emails cost him his NFL job ... sadly, with good reason. The Raiders couldn’t justify keeping him given the nature of these slurs.

Joy Reid Still has a job
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/j...ge-per-report/
They read over 650,00 e-mails. Over 10 years.
Please.
Who of us could survive that?
Joy Reid. That’s one.

Joy Reid’s a good example, but no smart person puts racist and homophobic slurs into emails you’re going to share with people who can hang you out to dry. You think if you said about your boss what Gruden said about the NFL commissioner, there wouldn’t be a price to pay? We may not like it, but these are times of scrutiny. Reid should have paid a bigger price; Gruden wasn’t so fortunate. The NFL’s whole “end intolerance” campaign may be nothing more than a publicity stunt, but to do nothing beyond a slap on the wrist would have made it a mockery.

I don’t know who could survive it, but I know for sure who can’t. An NFL coach whose job depends on being able to cultivate team unity among a diverse group of players.

Is there any place I can go to read the emails. The several articles I looked at were pretty vague.

Winding back the clock to investigate me and many in my neighborhood, you'd find plenty material to label us bigots, racists or plain mean.
Most (hopefully all) grew up, work for, with or supervised blacks and left behind that old neighborhood hate mentality.
At what point in life should our success be free from errors of the past?

As soon as news came out about his emails it was going to be a done deal.
I know it was about 10 (?) years ago but why use that type of language at all?
Yea, you're upset but I never condoned name calling or using slurs ... that goes for either side of the political spectrum. I think using that tactic is easy to show you disagree but you can get your message across in other ways.
Unfortunately in todays environment there are certain people or groups that can use slurs against a group while other groups cannot. It just is.
But what that demonstrates is a way of talking or communicating that can be copied as a suitable means to getting your anger across. Better if it was not acceptable at all ... by anyone for any reason.
But certain groups use certain phrases or words against another group and get away with it. Hence, fostering it's continued use by all sides.
For years I've tried to figure out why the 'N' word is hurtful only if some groups use it yet acceptable within another group. If some words hurt or offend doesn't it make sense that it always results in that same outcome no matter who uses it for a purpose?
If the 'N' word is reduced in the future lexicon of language, over time one could hope that it loses it usage similar to some words of olde English that have been lost except in scholarly studies but never appear anywhere else.

Some of the emails they looked at were as recent as 2018. And I agree: Why use that type of language at all, especially when you’re corresponding with a high-ranking NFL executive? It was just plain stupid. I’d like to believe his words don’t reflect his heart, but Gruden’s paying a price for stupidity if nothing else.

Going back on emails to expose people is just so like China, Russia, NK and Iran. What have we come to? People doing concrete things, take them down, but words? No more sticks and stones...

For sure we've gone completely overboard...to the point that often it's ridiculous. Having said that there are "words of wisdom" that always will keep a person out of trouble, famous or not.
Never, ever, put anything in an e-mail that you would not want your Mother or kids to read...or that you would not want to find on the first page of a newspaper. Follow that rule and you'll never find yourself in the very unfortunate situation that fellow alum Gruden is in.

And another from Jerry Brewer of the Post. I think Whitlock makes some good points but also diminishes what truly is an egregious and stupid act of email suicide. Brewer is as harsh as he can be but also makes some good points while burying any hint of forgiveness six feet under.
I just think the whole thing is sad, considering it was avoidable had Gruden used an ounce of restraint.

For me the biggest issue is the lack of equal justice or punishment in all of these cases -
Double standards and hypocrisy have become common place -

Forcing Gruden out at the same time they announce rappers as the Super Bowl halftime show will not work out well for the NFL. I predict memes with Gruden's emails side by side with lyrics written and performed by all the rappers. By the way does anyone have a link to the actual texts of the offending emails? I haven't been able to find them. That is a bit curious.

In Roman Catholic Baltimore Catechism Language
Jon Gruden severely scandalized the University of Dayton. I bet we do not see his picture in the Student section of the Arena for a while.

NFL “standards”
As this keeps unfolding, I am most amazed that the NFL has now revealed they have “standards” that must be upheld.
Who knew??

How dare you point-out the hypocrisy of they who are smarter than we?!
That said, I haven’t seen any of the emails, but I did read Arch’s article about the matter, and his descriptions led me to believe Gruden suggested that the Tampa Bay owner could “b!0w me”, and that certain nationally-recognized men were “pu$$!@$”. Just a guess as to the exact words, but given Arch’s descriptions, I’d say I’m not far off.
Back to Gruden. Opinions on politicians and other people in power are one thing. Disparaging remarks about an entire group of people on the basis of their skin color, gender, etc. are something else entirely. And you never, EVER, make remarks of that nature in such a way that they can be recorded. With great power comes great responsibility, including the responsibility to speak with great discretion.
