Saint Louis Billikens
Last Season: 23-13 (11-5)
Key Losses: None
Head Coach: Rick Majerus
Projected Starting Lineup
PG: Kyle Cassity 6-3 Jr.
SG: Kwamain Mitchell 5-10 Jr.
SF: Christian Salecich 6-3 So.
PF: Willie Reed 6-9 Jr.
C: Cody Ellis 6-8 So.
Key Reserves: Brian Conklin 6-6 Jr. PF, Femi John 6-2 So. SG, Cory Remekun 6-7 So. SF
Normally, a team with no seniors on its roster that is one of the youngest teams in the country would struggle. But that wasn't the case for Saint Louis. On a roster with nine freshmen, four sophomores and one junior (that's right - only one player on the entire roster was older than a sophomore), the Billikens went 11-5 in a tough Atlantic 10 conference and nearly made the NCAA tournament. They won six games in a row in early February to get themselves into the at-large bid conversation. But close losses late in the season to both Xavier and Temple severely hurt the Billikens' chances. Then, their youth really showed when they lost by 16 to Rhode Island in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament.
But the good news is that the Billikens, led by Rick Majerus, gained a year of experience and earned 23 victories

Conference Rank: #6 Atlantic 10 Conference 2009-10: 23-13, 11-5
2009-10 postseason: CBI
Coach: Rick Majerus (57-42 at Saint Louis, 478-187 overall)
Final Projection:
A year from now St. Louis will be eyeing an A-10 title. But for now a step up from the CBI is a step in the right direction. This is a team that has the talent to make it to the NCAA Tournament, but they have to get past some good teams in their conference. The A-10 may be looking at four tournament teams, but there are five teams that appear capable of making the big dance. St. Louis’ recent lack of big game success could leave them on the outside looking in.
Projected Post-season Tournament: NIT
Projected Starting Five:
Kyle Cassity, Junior, Guard, 6.0 ppg
Kwamain Mitchell, Junior, Guard, 15.9 ppg
Christian Salecich, Sophomore, Guard, 6.4 ppg
Cody Ellis, Sophomore, Forward, 10.5 ppg
Willie Reed, Junior, Forward, 12.4 ppg

Per WH of the A10 board:
http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...-st-louis.html
ST. LOUIS
The keys to the Billikens' success is to develop one of the young point guards quickly or get Kwamain Mitchell back in late December; find another go-to scorer and reliable outside shooter; identify another interior presence to replace Willie Reed; and do a better job on the boards (-2.1 margin, 10th in the A-10).
The Bills would have been title contenders if Mitchell and Reed were not suspended, but there's no way they can win the A-10 now. Those two players led SLU in scoring in 28 of the team's 36 games and would have been preseason All-League selections.
Still, SLU has plenty of talent and at least a few upperclassmen now in bruiser Brian Conklin and combo guard Kyle Cassity. The team has also gotten deeper and more athletic, though the roster is young once again.
The equalizer is Rick Majerus. He has never had a losing season and each year he has won more games at SLU than preaseason forecasters predicted. I suspect RM will pull it off again and surpass my forecast, but the A-10 will be very unforiving to young teams this year and St. Louis has a tougher league schedule.
It's important that freshman guard Jordair Jett grasp the offense quickly and sophomore Cory Remekun step up his game inside, at least on defense. Conklin can't guard the interior by himself and 6-11 frosh Rob Loe is said to be somewhat soft. Cody Ellis also has to step up and give SLU some outside-in scoring.
The big question is whether anyone can create his own offense, a la Mitchell, when defenses tighten up late in the game. Who's going to take and make the big shot?
NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE
W - AUSTIN PEAY
W - ROCKHURST
L - GEORGIA
W - TENNESSEE STATE
L - IUPUI
W - At Portland
L - At Duke
W - JACKSONVILLE
L - At Missouri State
W - NORTHEASTERN (Cancun)
L - Southern Miss (Cancun)
L - Colorado State or Ole Miss (Cancun)
W - BOWLING GREEN
W - CHICAGO STATE
Rick Majerus loaded up with home games against beatable opponents, a fortunate strategy in light of the loss of Mitchell and Reed. The BIllikens start out with Austin Peay in what could be a tough game. Peay is coached by Dave Loos and the team returns four starters. Not a big scoring bunch, though, so SLU should eke out a win.
Rockhurst is not a Division 1 team and shouldn't pose too much threat. Georgia, on the other hand, is big and athletic, with a potential NBA draft pick in 6-10 Trey Thompkins. Little chance of the Bills pulling an upset here, even at home.
The five-game home stand to open the season concludes with Tennessee State and IUPUI. Tennessee State has eight new players after a season in which the team lost 23 games. It's a quick, small and athletic bunch but Tennessee State should be susceptible to SLU's patient offense. IUPUI has beaten several A-10 teams in the recent
years and returns most of its top players, including future pro Alex Young, from a program that won 25 games last year. A young SLU team is bound to lose one or two of these games at home this season.
SLU goes on the road finally to visit Portland and Duke. Portland lost four starters from a 21-win team, but the squad has good size - Jack Sikma's son is a starting forward - and some returning veterans in the backcourt. A very winnable game, but Portland did beat Oregon and UCLA last year. Duke, however, is not winnable.
Returning home SLU hosts Jacksonville, another 20-win team from a season ago. Jacksonville is athletic and deep but evidently the team has trouble scoring. They won't be able to beat SLU with athleticism and defense alone. Missouri State returns all five starters after a 25-win season. MSU beat St. Louis at Chaifetz last year and there's no reason to think it won't beat the Bills again now that the Bears have home-court advantage.
SLu flies to Cancun for three games, starting with Northeastern. Could be a tough game on a neutral court, but Northeastern has trouble with disciplined teams and SLU should squeeze out a win. If so, the team would almost certainly play Souther Miss next. Coach Larry Eustachy has his best team yet, with all five starters returning.
Southern's experience should carry the day. The final game would likely pair the Bills up with Mississippi or Colorado State, both of which are talented and experienced. I predict a loss, but if SLU wins two games in this tournament, other A-10 teams should be wary. It will mean the young Billikens players are getting up to speed quickly.
St. Louis takes on Bowling Green after returning stateside. BG is a bit like recent LaSalle teams but not as talented. Lots of midsized athletes without special uskills. SLU will win if the Bills handle the press and run the offense like RM wants. Late in the season, SLU feasts on Chicago State to give the players a breather amid a tough A-10 sked. Chicago State, an independent, lost 23 games last season.
NONCONFERENCE RECORD: 8-6
BONUS A-10 PREDICTION: 8-8 (16-14 overall)
The Billikens drop Richmond and pair up with Dayton, Duquesne and Xavier, one of the toughest unbalanced schedules in the A-10. That would have been fine with Mitchell and Reed, but it could be brutal without. SLU went 4-1 vs. these three teams last year. Hard to see the Bills doing any better than 3-3 this around, and maybe worse if Mitchell redshirts and the new guys struggle.
SLU also goes on the road at Temple, Fordham, George Washington, Richmond and St. Bonaventure. Two wins is probably the ceiling with this tough group. Forget about Temple and Richmond: SLU has had trouble beating GW and Bonaventure on the road since joining the league.

Suspended Billikens
So what's the status of the two suspended Billikens? I read somewhere that they *might* be reinstated for this game.

I've read rumors that they will both be redshirted this year so that they have 2 full years of eligibility left. I'm not sure how valid that is.

There have been no official announcements about Mitchell and Reed yet, but SLU has been very quiet throughout the whole thing. They have turned in the paperwork to get reinstated though. Rumors and Reed's father say that if they are reinstated they will both redshirt like Fudd said.

Thanks for the updates fellas!
Not a boost to the RPI numbers without those two for SLU, is it? And if they do get reinstated AND redshirt...man the sky's the limit for that team in the future.

Really don't want to let this team hang with us. 7 rebounds for CW already. Let's get the lead to double figures and keep it there for awhile, even at 10-11pts of a lead.

I'll take 33-22 at the half.
50+% shooting from the field and outperforming SLU in almost every spot in the box score.

11 point lead at the half. Would have liked to have put them away in the lst half, but happy with this. Just don't want a let down to start the 2nd half. Love to win this at SLU.

33-22 at the half. I wouldn't expect slu to go 1-11 from three point range in the 2nd half. Defense needs to be better

This is not a good SLU team! We should be up by much more but one cannot complain with an 11 point lead at half time. I think if Mitchell and Reed return, this team could compete with Temple as the leader of the A-10. The players in the game (Cody, Ellis, Conklin and McCall) are all nice complementary players. Think of UD losing CW and JS, how good would we be without them?

You are seriously going to complain about a double digit lead...on the road...in the A10
get your eyes and ears checked.
Flyers have played awesome, lets just come out with same intensity and put them away early

SLU is AWFUL but I'll take any win on the road in conf play. I agree, we should be up more but decent first half. Hopefully we come out strong and put this game away by the 15 min mark.

I'm convinced SLU is trying to get a technical called on themselves. Their coach and players are b****ing a lot.
