Less than a year ago we almost beat Illinois at their place. I'm glad they were willing to come back to Dayton after the loss of Colleen Ward and Michelle Bartsch. We even outscored them in that match by 2 points. Lets hope for another exciting game but a Dayton win this time.
Really excited to see what new faces get some time on the court and to see how Isolde has improved. Her offense was a true weakness and she only saw 5 attempts during the Illinois match last year. We clearly need some good passing to get the ball to our middles and then to in turn make sure she gets a chance to show off her improved and more forceful attack and better timing.
On the other hand we had trouble stopping their middles Anna Dorn and Erin Johnson. Those two were way too efficient. Our serves need to be disruptive, and it would be nice to block these two early to shake their confidence and get the Frericks crowd fired up.

I agree with all of this. We haven't been able to knock off too many teams ranked above us in recent years. This pre-conference schedule gives us a chance to show we can do that. We've come close several times like you said.
What I notice most against teams that are ranked in the top 15 and teams we end up falling to in the NCAAs is we don't put enough pressure on them with our serve and we seem to have problems with serve receive when the good teams turn it up in this area. As a program, we are soooo very close to consistantly being a top 15 team and the second weekend of the NCAAs. Six years ago we were a weak blocking team and seemed to be short 1-2 OHs every year, etc. We've not only upgraded skill sets and performance in 95% of the areas needed to be a Top 15 team, but we've maintained it. For expample, blocking. We have been a top blocking team the past three years, and should be again this year. We've never had stronger OHs while at the same time year in and year out replacing all-american MBs and Setters, etc. We are soooooo close. And I think this year we can take that final step and elevate the serve, serve recieve and passing. We can handle anything the A-10 has thrown at use the last 3-4 years. It's time to show we can handle it against the top teams in the country. I believe that is going to happen this season -- starting this weekend.
GO FLYERS!

Can't wait for first serve tonight. I'm guessing with 2700+ at the soccer match last night for an upset of a ranked team, Red Scare will be out in force again tonight pulling for another upset on the volleyball court. It should be wild. I'll be watching the video feed. Rumor has it there is a new color commentator taking over for Mandy -- who is Director of VB Operations at the University of Kentucky now. I'm expecting it to be very entertaining. lol.
Looks like the team will be wearing red uniforms...

A little history:
• The Flyers won the only meeting between the two schools in Dayton in the championship match of the 2007 Dayton Flyer Classic. Illinois had two match points in the fourth set before the Flyers scored four straight points to win the fourth set 31-29 and went on to win the match in five sets.
I remember this match well. Jamie Lee Richards was serving and went for it. I think she served 2 aces in a row to help us win.
So we are 1-0 against Illinois at Frerricks. And we pushed them to 5 sets last year at Illinois. I like our chances!!!! Looking for 2-0 at Frerricks against Illinois. Hope we pack the house. 3,000 fans would be awesome!!! and a big-time new record. GO FLYERS!!!
Also, when some fans traveled to Illinois for the NCAAs a couple years ago, there were very positive comments posted on UDPride about how the Illinois fans were so welcoming to UD fans. Time to return that hospitality. I would expect the UD crowd to be very loud during the match but if you have a chance, make sure you thank the Illinois fans for making the trip, etc. After all, the bigger the crowds the better match environment.

About five minutes until game time. Illinois traveled well they have a nice following here. The students are filling in well also. In warm ups Illinois looks big, fast and strong. Everything you would expect them to be.
This is going to be a great opening test for our younger Flyers.

Illinois take their first TO at 15-12 Dayton. 2nd has been a back and forth with 1 point advantages until the last 3 point. Keep it rolling.

ILL had a 2 point lead early in the 3rd. But they just had to take a time out after UD goes on a 4 point run to lead 11-9. Jenna Jendryk is in for Shayne and comes in and nails a block. The run goes off on Krafta's serve.
2nd ILL TO. UD up 18-15. Freshman continue to play really well.

Biggest win in UD history. Congrats to Sheff and staff. And way to take it to Illinois ladies!!!! Now have a nice dinner with your families. Try to get some sleep cause you've got #11 tomorrow and they will come after you, but stay together and you can take down the Wave!!!!!
There were a lot of "best thing about this match", but in the end...not that big of on-court celebration...and it was GREAT. These ladies acted like they knew they were good enough to beat a Top 10 team...errr...let me re-pharse that. These ladies acted like they knew they were good enough to SWEEP a Top 10 team. Gotta LOVE it! Can't wait to hear from those at the match and I agree -- can't wait to see the attendance number.

We hit over 400 as a TEAM. That probably leads the nation right now. And it was against #7. Seriously, that is so off-the-charts.

The place was almost full. It never felt like UD lost control from the beginning. I talked to a few Illinois fans and they were impressed with the team and the Flyer Faithful! If your in town the place to be tomorrow night is in the Frerick Center!

Awesome game! Way to go ladies!
I was amazed that Krafka started at libero, and not Paige. I think there was only one other time in Paige's history that I saw her not play libero. Amazing. Both Krafka and Turner played well. I think Isolde started at MB as well, though I thought some of her blocks weren't going very well, like her hands weren't straight or something. Though, the stats show her in the lead with 7 block assists, so I must not be looking correctly.
Frericks was rocking, and it was awesome. I was hoping for a very competitive 5-setter, but am thrilled with a Flyer Sweep.

UDBrian's interview with Sheff said there would be 7 recruits in the house tonight -- 4 already committed, leaving 3 that would be looking at UD for 2014 or farther out. (2013 scholarships are gone.) So I went to Rich Kern to get the four 2013 recruits and low and behold we already have a 2014 commitment. Newest recruit is Kelli Bates -- a 5'11" OH from Bradley, ILL
The 2013 recruits are
6'3" MB Alyssa Beach from Perrysburg, OH
5'11" S Rachel Fortner from KY
6'3" OH Taylor Fricano from ILL
6'2" OH Lauren Gresham from MO
The Flyers put on an awesome show for the visiting recruits.

And so did the Red Scare, and the Flyer Faithful. The bench-opposite upper deck stands had a decent orange hue to it at the beginning of the game, but by the end of the second match, the orange hue was starting to bleed heavily to the red color.

If there were 2,000 in Frericks, there were close to 2,000 20 yards outside Frericks at Baujan Field for UD mens soccer. The support of the Olympic sports was terrific tonight with that many people on campus.

Great match. I think Pepperdine will be more difficult. Thought Krafka played well, but I would like to see here set with her hands up instead of the low arm set. That low set seems less accurate and gives the defense so much time to set up. I know Vargas has done that as well - especially when setting the back row. Maybe it works for the back row, but not so good for the front row?

Someone who knows more about the backrow rules will have to verify this...but I THINK the Libero can not set the ball with two hands???? Which is why they learn to bump set. Both Paige and Janna do this and I think it is because they have to, but I'm not 100% on that. During the match I think Janna handled a free ball with two hands and Sam did a turn and burn attack for a kill off it -- but it was a point they gave to Illinois. I think it was because the libero can't "set" the ball -- and Sam had her one and only mental lapse for the night. (She really played well!!!)
What I did notice is Janna always bump set the left or the middle back hitter. Paige did that until last year when we saw her also set the ball to the rightside OH. My guess is we will see some of that from Janna as the season goes on after she has had time to work on it in practice. As a freshman, you don't want to overload them too quickly. There is a lot to learn, especially the speed of the college game.

Thanks. Looked it up. Libero must bump set in front of 10' line. Anything goes behind line. Now I know why they do it.

After a very tough week for SLU Volleyball, they hang with #4 Nebraska, but get swept 13-17-18. This is a tough tournament too. Notre Dame took a set off of #1 UCLA earlier today. I expect the Huskers to win this tournament and knock off UCLA. NE is really good at every position.

As I said on Twitter, I dont know if Illinois is the 7th best team in the country, but what I do know is they were completely outclassed tonight. We were better in nearly every phase. I think we may find things even tougher tomorrow against Pepperdine.
We owed Illinois one however. We flat out flushed that match away last year. You cannot tell me Sheffer and the players weren't puking coat hangers after that result last season. And the same thing can be said for the Pepperdine match (at UD Arena?). We flat out had it, and lost it at the end.
Pepperdine has to play twice tomorrow, first against Illinois in the morning. Hopefully that goes five sets. If we take care of Pepperdine and Ohio, then we can start to strut around and ask ourselves how good we might be or can be.

I forgot to mention that President Dan Curran showed up at the match, and even at one point went into the Red Scare to watch a few points.
Also, I saw Amanda Cowdrey at the end of the match in the front row seats near mid court, so alumni in the house!
I swear, though, the tallest Illinois player could have been related to Fletmeier. I swore it looked just like her.

"No one hit below .250," Illinois head coach Kevin Hambly noted. "Tonight we weren't defensive minded and they took advantage of that. This is a buzz saw we came into tonight. They were ready for us."
This is exactly what happened -- but it surprised me. Their Libero is excellent and their setter is a senior who set them to the National Championship match last year. Between those two, they should have been able to get the ball to their middles and they simply could not.
I remember thinking in the first set when we were dominating and in total control that maybe we came out more focused and jumped on them and Illinois was a step behind, but it's a long match and you can't win it in the first set. Then in the second set, I noticed Illinois was hanging in there, but most of their points were coming off our errors, not what they were doing on their side of the net. And of course after 12-12 we started playing better and pulled away. During that set I started thinking we were beating Illinois in every phase of the game. They couldn't stop us and they had nothing offensively. In the end, that's exactly what was happening. We flatout played better in every phase of the game.
On another board some Illinois fans were completely frustrated by this match. One posted they were screaming at their computer, "Get them out of system". Then another replied, "It doesn't matter. They are scoring out of system." Later one reasonsed, "Well this shouldn't be a surprise, we lost Ward and Bartch to graduation." But another person responded, "And Dayton started two freshman."
Apparently their fans had no anwsers either. And let me add, I think Illinois has GREAT fans. Very knowledgable and they have always been very welcoming when we played at Huff Hall. And UD fans who spoke to ILL fans last night said they were very complimentary towards our team and our fans, ie Red Scare. I have a lot of respect for them and only post the above to further show how dominate we were in this match.

I welcomed an Illinois fan last night, and he said what a great atmosphere we had there. As well, last week, I welcomed a fan with a Butler tshirt on. They are from Indy, but have a freshman at UD, so I said welcome to UD, and welcome to the A10, it should be a good year.

The 2013 recruits are
6'3" MB Alyssa Beach from Perrysburg, OH
5'11" S Rachel Fortner from KY
6'3" OH Taylor Fricano from ILL
6'2" OH Lauren Gresham from MO
The Flyers put on an awesome show for the visiting recruits.

I saw a recruit walking around with her mom (sorry don't know well enough to know who she is) between sets and after the sweep...both with big grins. Good sign.

Good to hear. I can only look online and I didn't see anything yet.
Found it -- the 19th article on a list of 20 about 3 full pages down on the scroll -- and not on the UD Sports page, but here it is:
http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/...ht-sets/nRKJy/
And the best for last, Adrienne Green's tweet this morning:
AdrienneGreen Still can't get over the atmosphere and high level of play in Frericks last night! Never been prouder to call myself a #UDVB alum

And we made the Headline news last night after upsetting Illinois -- on the NCAA website. Pretty cool.

If it matters to anyone, the Illinois player who apparently sprained or twisted her ankle against Dayton, was on crutches on Saturday evening. I passed her in the hallway, and asked how it was, and she said she would be back next weekend.

Illinois might have struggled this weekend but I checked their web site and like 11 of their players were ranked in the Top-70 in the cuontry, including four in the Top-17. Their 2011 recruiting class was #3 in the country.
So they had stupid talent all over the court. They will get it together. Its not like losing to Dayton and Pepperdine will be counted as bad losses for them.
OhioU is going to be very very good. They can win 23-25 matches this year. All three wins were big fat NCAA resume' building wins that will be RPI friendly all year.
Of course playing at Frericks is an advantage. Its called a home court. Nobody said "the only reason Illinois beat Dayton last year was because it was played at Illinois" however.
Folks will always find some nefarious excuse to explain why you won. When we lose its because we're not that good. When we win its because the other team took us lightly and had a bad game.
You are what your record says you are. Period.
