Butler game Thread

First Set - Flyers 26-24 - Down 16-22 and score six straight while Vargas is serving. Sheff has to be pulling his hair out on these slow starts.

Apparently all the coach talk after the SLU match fell on deaf ears. For some unknown reason the flyers can't get it going till late in the set. Look for Sheff to pull starters including the setter if things don't pick up early in set two.

Second Set to Butler 25-22. Our hitting was terrible that set. Same scenario as the match at Frericks. It was 1-1 back then before we blew them out in the last two sets. I would not expect that to happen today. Butler looked solid back then. We need to step up our game.

Flyers win set 3, 25-20, and win set 4 25-22.

The slow start thingy is a common disease in sports. You see it everywhere with every sport. It's especially common with very good teams. Mainly because in certain matchups the only difference on a given night between the teams is adrenalin---previous pedegree aside. Our highschool coach made us play a 6 minute scrimmage IN WARMUPS in basketball to try to solve the issue. Sometimes it worked, other times we started fast and were gassed in the 4th quarter. The motor on some kids works quicker than others.

There are a lot of little tricks to get them going early, but nothing coaches try works everytime. And actually while it sounds like a good idea at the time, negative solutions like benching can really backfire. Whipping the team by running laps in practice doesn't get a team focuse a day later to start a contest.

We all know that in the really topshelf players, adrenalin is what finally gets them to their "A" game. And short of illegal doping, that kicks in at different times for different players.

How often have we heard, "We can't keep waiting until the ___________ (fill in the blank) of the game to get started". The really good teams overcome the slow start, chalk up a W, move on and never look back.

Not a great idea to focus on the negative. "If we don't shoot freethrows better, sometime it's going to cost us a game". Better for the coach to increase the practice time for freethrows and at the end of games get the best ft shooters in the game. Avoid the negative drama.

I think the fact that A10 opponents seldom win sets against UD contributes to it. And contributes to difficulty getting past the first weekend in the NCAAs. The tough early nonconference schedule is all Sheff and UD can do to offset the tournament impacts - but it's so far removed come tourney time.

SLU and Butler are big time rivals for us and playing at their place increases their will to protect their court and of course with a national rating of 18 its their superbowl. We should know and realize were going to get their best shot regardless of their records, and we did.

Pulling a starter out of a game should not be considered a negative if the player returns later. As with the SLU game when the starter(s) were pulled the coaches went over what the coaches saw and allowed them to see it too from the sidelines before returning to action.

SLU was double teaming Kra and Z and focusing on Campbell which left Alina Turner open, big mistake for which they paid.

SLU fans next to me couldn't believe Alina's vertical jump. She not only can jump but finds the seam when she deposits the ball on the other side of the net. Fun to watch. Of course then SLU adjusted for Alina it left the other open. Dayton is just too deep for most A10teams.
