Get to Know VCU: VS the A-10

Since VCU will be joining the A-10 immediately, how have they done against the A-10 recently? And what does this say about how they might fair this upcoming season.

In the last 2 years VCU has gone 0-3 with losses to Dayton, Xavier, and GW. Over the last 10 years, VCU's record is 4-6 with 2 wins each against the teams leaving the A-10, Charlotte and Temple. VCU has played Temple and GW the most at 3 matches. VCU has lost all those matches against GW (although 2 have been very close) and taken 2 of 3 from Temple.

BIGGEST WIN:
VCU's biggest win against the A-10 was a 3-1 victory against Temple where the Rams edged the Owls by 18 pts (30-28 30-21 31-33 30-21) on a neutral Kansas court during the games go to 30 pt era. Putting this in perspective, Temple was the clear 4th best team in the league. If VCU was in the A-10 in 2009, Temple vs. VCU would have been a quarterfinals match in the A-10 tournament.

BIGGEST LOSS:
VCU's biggest loss was against the Flyers in Dayton when they lost by a total of 42 pts. (10-25 8-25 15-25) Understand that this 2010 UD team had only 3 regular season losses to Minn., Neb., and Ill., and wins against Baylor and UNI. With a near victory against Ohio State in the tourney. So VCU got trounced by an unbelievable team.

BEST SERIES:
VCU's closest matches have been against GW, despite the 0-3 record against the colonials. 2 of the 3 matches have taken 5 games (2009 and 2007). In the 2007 GW won and scored 3 more points than VCU in Richmond, and in 2009 VCU actually outscored GW by 2 in the loss. With their proximity and GW's success as the 4th best team recently, this could become a good rivalry. A rivalry that will not only provide close matches but possibly be exciting enough to excite fans and bring good recruits into these programs.

I think VCU will finish in the middle of the pack (4,5,6) probably with GW and Duquesne. Their matches against Temple and Charlotte will be of significance if only to hopefully show that the overall volleyball strength of the conference has improved.

Hopefully, we can trade one of the La Salle matches for VCU.

This is the 3rd year in a row we have had 2 matches against LaSalle. Prior to the schedule release I thought this would be the year we only played them once and was surprised to see them twice again. I hope you are right -- and as Figgie123 pointed out under another thread -- the schedule had once less conference match to begin with. It would help our RPI if we end up with one LaSalle match and 2 VCU matches.

Playing La Salle provides UD no benefits statistically, strategically, physically, economically, etc... Having VCU or any other team as a team we play twice would be better.

Additionally, the best way to welcome a new team to the conference is to feed them to the lions (or the Flyers in this case). The A-10 should put them in their place by giving them a good old fashioned beat down on the court at the hands of this year's favorite to win the conference.

It also provides LaSalle no benefits. Its a waste of time for both programs and you would think the A10 office would be doing all it can to protect the NCAA programs in the league by avoiding double matchups like this.

Its far more important for the league to protect Dayton from playing LaSalle twice, than offering LaSalle a chance to play Dayton twice. When you are in a one- or two-bid league, you cant afford to water down a Top-25 team with a Bottom-25 team.

Excellent point Chris. I didn't stop to do the math -- but since the A-10 dropped the East-West format -- and we are now into our 3rd year of the new format -- maybe some coaches will propose something like: The bottom 2-3 teams each year only play the top 4 teams once the next year. (Again, I didn't do the math.)

The only "problem" I see is come A-10 tourney time -- this could favor the bottom 2-3 teams over the middle of the pack teams who had to play the top 4 teams twice. But, when you don't play every team twice any given year anyway, you get some in-equities in the schedules anyway. So I'm guessing this or something similar could help the league.

There might be some inequities, but making your Top-25 team play one of the worst programs in DI volleyball history twice a season (nevermind repeatedly), is just not common horse sense and goes beyond any standard deviation of tolerance.

And like you said -- it doesn't do LaSalle any good either. If I remember correctly -- the last two years at least one of the LaSalle matches each year has become a match were a handful of starters don't play at all and a chance for the younger players to get on the court. That's "nice", but seriously...it says it all.
