Stetson
This Saturday the Flyers take on the Stetson Hatters at Welcome Stadium. An interesting fact on the Hatters is they started football in 2012. All their players were true freshman (for the most part) that year and they did not compete in the PFL. Therefore, their roster, similar to ours, has quite a few R-Sr. The Hatters are 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the PFL. They are coming off of a big overtime win against Campbell that was played at Campbell. Last week they played two QBs on offense, R-So Gaven DiFilippo started the game (and most games this season) but F Cole Martin finished the game. Between the two the Hatters are averaging 208 yd/gm through the air. Both QBs will run the ball, but not a lot. Their leading receivers are Kegan Moore and Donald Parham with 62 and 44 yd/gm, respectively. If you look at the Hatters season stats, they almost equally throw the ball and run it. On the ground, they are led by Sr Cole Mazza who is averaging 70 yd/gm. So RB Arkee Brown has also contributed to their ground attack with a total of 23 yd/gm. As a team, they are collecting a total of 120 yd/gm on the ground. On defense, they are led by All-American Safety (Sr) Donald Payne who is 6th in the nation in tackles averaging 11.1 stops per game. Although he is a safety, he pretty much has free rein and lines up all over the field. He is an exceptional player and will be playing on Sundays come next season. Also on defense they have a good LB in Jr Jeb Boudreaux who is averaging 10.6 stops per game (he is ranked 12th in the nation). Overall, I think this is the best team that Stetson has fielded since its first season in 2013.
Our offensive squad will need to establish the run early to gain control of this game at Welcome. We have been running the ball consistently and will need to continue to do so this week. The Flyers passing game has steadily improved during this season and will have to perform well in this one to come out on top. Jeske to Euritt has particularly been a thing of beauty the last couple weeks. Hope to see more of that this week against the Hatters. On defense, the big play by the opponent has been an issue in most games this year. We need to limit the Hatters rushing attack and put some pressure on the QB (which ever one plays) to be successful this weekend. Like the offense, I think our D has played better each and every week.
Standing at 4-1 in the PFL, this is a very important game for the Flyers. I think Stetson will come into Welcome fired up off of their win at Campbell last week. We need to continue our overall consistency and play within our system on Saturday to come away with the win. Go Dayton Flyers!

Looks to be a great football watching day! Only two more home games, the season goes quickly. Hope to see some of you at the Flyers Club tailgate.

FCS Stats
Dayton is putting up some impressive defensive numbers in comparison to all the FCS. They are tied for 1st in the nation for interceptions with St Francis at 14 on the year. The Flyers are 6th in the nation in turnover margin with 1.25 per game. We are 3rd in the nation with blocked kicks at 5 YTD. Lastly, the Flyers stand at 5th in the nation on red zone defense at 0.643. We will have to continue these types of effort this week to defeat an improving Stetson Hatter squad.

One of the keys to this game will be to control Donald Payne. We can't let him run wild over our offense. The key to controlling that, I believe, will be a good blocking game from our FBs, TEs, and RBs. That and a diverse offensive scheme.
70 degree weather in late October... Gotta love it.
GO FLYERS!!!

I subscribe to the theory that we have to respect every opponent, and that certainly includes Stetson. But they likely will not be favored in 3 of their last 4 games. Tough road ahead.
If we play Dayton football (all 3 phases of the game cooking), this should not be a tough win at home.

If form holds, it looks like the Fox vs. Flyers for second place. SDU will be playoff bound.

Ugly game... Ugly win... Bottom line, though, is a win
Some positives... We took what they were giving us. No turnovers (any turnover could have been damaging in that type of game). The D-line seemed to have a good overall game.
We need to take care of business this week and clobber the Crusaders.
Go Flyers!!!

My word for the game was "boring". Actually left for the 3rd qtr.
Wasn't that #86 (Moore?) a big-strided runner fun to watch? Stetson has improved in 4 seasons.
Of course most football was boring yesterday for a restless guy like me. One gets that way watching 4 hour World Series games into the late every night! Go Tribe!

Stetson played very good defense. According to the program No 7 was their defensive standout and I did not see him play. Might have been a different story.

"Stetson went into the game with three true freshmen in the starting lineup on offense while also missing a pair of key pieces on defense – including All-American Donald Payne, who made the trip to Ohio but was not medically cleared to compete."

Kicking Game
Congrats to Sean Smith on being named PFL Co-Special Teams Player of the Week. Overall, he has been very impressive. He has been very good dropping his punts inside the 20. Hard to believe how often our opponent's punt returner has punts sail over their heads.
As far as Willy Will... Some of you may have been buying popcorn during halftime but Willy, during his pre-second half warm ups, booted two field goals. One from 61 yards and one from 63 yards. They were both slightly wind aided but still pretty impressive.
Both Will and Smith add a dimension to the team that can't be discounted.
Go Flyers!!!
